Went in here on Friday to pick up some weights for a new bar I bought. The weights were all the way at the back of the store meaning when you buy them you have to carry them all the way to the front of the store...so good layout there Big 5. The selection was not that great so I sort of settled because I didn't feel like driving to the other side of town in Valencia to see what they had at that store. I know from experience that Dick's Sporting goods would be more expensive so I wasn't going to try going there. Sure enough, bought the plates and walked them up to the front, one cashier who was a talker...after another five minutes with only two people in line and small purchases I got the plates. Tried to buy a folding knife asked the jackazz behind the counter to compare two of the knives he said he can only show me one at a time. I said I'm trying to compare the size of the two knives (closed) and he said no. I said can you place them both on the counter he said no. I can only show you one at a time. I said can you take them out and step back and hold them in your hand so I can compare the size by looking at them in your hand. He said no. I said f u you're an ahole and left. He is and we won't ever be shopping at big 5 again. Looking forward to the bankruptcy sale of this chain. Went to turners outdoorsman sales guy was happy to take as many knives out and place them on the counter as I wanted. Even let me hold them and compare them. Imagine that. This review is for the two five-star experiences that I had with two separate employees in the shoe department on the phone. Both were super patient and thorough in answering my many questions and checking stock on my behalf. One call was made late in the evening near closing time and the other, in the morning. During both times, I received courteous, calm, and knowledgeable service. This type of people/customer-oriented service has become rarer in this day and age, especially on the phone. I remember Big 5 being "The" store... in the early 90's! What happened since then? Their business model just never caught up with the times. This particular location is usually out of what I need, inter-tubes for my bike, straps for lifting weights, knee braces and more I cannot think of. Inventory seems to be an issue here. Another issue here is the cleanliness and organization. Imagine what Toy's R Us looks like a few days before Christmas... This store has the same look all year long (at least whenever I showed up). Prices are generally more expensive compared to what you can purchase on Amazon/eBay, but if you need it now... Big 5 "may" have it. Other locations I've visited have been better, so it may be how this particular store is being run. read more

Geeze, I guess it's been awhile since I've been to a Big 5 because god was I expecting so much more. The store is cluttered, not as well organized as one would hope which made it extremely hard to browse through. They also don't carry as wide of a selection as other stores such as Dick's, Sports Authority, or Sports Chalet but I guess that's to be expected since it is a lot smaller than it's competitors. Super happy they had the extension straps I needed for my Yoga trapeze!! Can't wait to set it up in our back yard and work out. I love my body, i love being super tiny and small just like my mom; whom after 4 babies and NO SURGERY is in great shape and a size 2. She can pull the low-cuts without a bra and her breast don't sag or go in different directions; and yes she breastfeed all 4 of us. Her secret you ask? She works out!! She doesn't spend time sitting on her ass watching novelas, she works out. Everyday and this place has everything we need to keep our bodies looking great!! Thankful for the good genes and all the amazing ways my mother taught us to take care of ourselves. I remember being a young girl and having her sit me down to watch a breast augmentation, you really have to hate your body to put it through that such procedure. Went there on 05/25/2014 around 3:00pm to buy a fishing pool for my son. The associate (didn't catch his name) was very helpful in pointing me in the right direction. The cashier was also very friendly and she was very polite. After leaving the store I noticed a defect with the pole and the two associates gave me no trouble with exchanging the defective fishing pole with a brand new one. This review is for Justin, Valerie and Shauna. I came in with less than an hour before closing...and you know most retail shops hate when you do that, but that was not the case for these employees. They were extremely helpful for me as it was difficult for me to find a tent that I liked & that was reasonably priced. Valerie definitely took the time to assist me and made sure that I was happy with the decision that I chose; she also assisted with anything else that we were looking for. Justin was 1000% great with corrected pricing & he also educated me on a certain knife that I usually purchase for work every 2 to 3 months, so that was really helpful! Learn something new everyday! I definitely think that this store is definitely under reviewed! Everything was stock nicely, easily to find prices minus a few things where tags have fallen off, but over all the cleanliness of the store was great! The individuals that wrk here in management positions should be trained on customer service. I came in today to exchange a pair of boots my daughter received as a Christmas gift. The gentleman in the shoe department was super nice went above and beyond. Unfortunately child sizes only go up to a 4. I decided to simply get my money back since the difference in price for an adult size 6 was $40 more. Brandy was extremely rude talking down to me. She did nothing to try to help me and refused to give my money back. After argueing with me she said she'd have to call corporate to see if it will be aproved. She walked towards the back then came back to the register and practically through my receipt copy at me. When I asked her for her name she ignored me. After the 3rd time asking her she said her name was the nanager. The other female at the register Diana who was very nice told me her name was Brandy. She should be demoted or taught how to treat a paying customer. read more

Every single visit to this store since opening has been a disappointment... Customer service is HORRIBLE here. Even the manager has walked right past us without offering any help... Not on ONE occasion, but ALL occasions that we've visited the store. The only reason we keep coming back is bc its nearer to us then Stevenson Ranch store.. And like always we walk out without anything bc we are angered by the awful service. i guess we are hopeful that the next visit, service would've changed, but hasn't happened which is why we end up at Stevenson Ranch anyway and make our purchases there. I hope this specific store changes ownership, bc this owner & manager combo is AWFUL. I ALSO want to briefly mention that customer service stems from managerial guidance... So I had visited the canyon country store during the holiday season and was trying to purchase running shoes, the "new balance 512s " when one of the shoe sales men couldn't find the shoe I was looking for. I figured he wasnt trying to help me so i asked for a manager during the busy Christmas season. So he sent out Brandi who went in the back for a few minutes and came out the back letting me know she had no more of the 512s in her store. I was furious figureing I was to go home empty handed when she had mentioned that she might be able to still help me by calling her friends at the Valencia store. Not knowing if they had them, she asked if I would be willing to wait for a minute or two. Although I was in a big hurry, because of the time of the season I waited. She then came out and had let me know that Robert from the valencia store had checked in the back and had 2 pairs in my size and she had told him to put them on hold for me, I would be heading over there by the end of the day.
