I came here for a few select items that I couldn't find elsewhere. Clips amd rings and straps for my weight room. Today I needed little ododdities that normally come with your equipment when you purchase them new but my home gym has a collection of bands and weights I bought separately. I want a good price in these so I visit Big 5. I always have someone help me since I have no idea where to look and it is so much quicker. I've never been disappointed at this locatiolocation. What a long standing icon this store is in Mo-Town! Called at 8:58PM(2 minutes b4 close and the guy cheerfully answered the phone and my question. Next day I went in and one young lady went out of her way to get a ladder and get a top shelf item down for me to purchase. Literally the worst customer service I have ever had. Went here to shop for camping supplies the first time I asked for a blow up mattress and the lady didn't help me at all just looked at me like I was an idiot. I went to buy a tent that was on sale that I had seen online. I got it cause it was a great deal we went camping put it up and there was a hole at the bottom we hadn't ever used it. I went to return it the lady (Linda) was so rude and I'm pretty sure she was the manager. I told her there was a hole she looked at me "a hole??" She ended returning it for me, must have thought I left and she was talking to 2 other employees about what just happened and the return policy and how other managers have had them return stuff before and they hate the return policy. I never write reviews but I can't believe how bad they were in that store.. I will never ever shop at that location again! I'm really happy with my experience here. I came a couple days ago to buy snow boots.There was a gentleman that helped my man & I . He was very helpful and super friendly. Then I had to come back and get pants for my daughter and I . The 2 girls behind the counter were very nice. I wasn't sure on what pants to go with so an employee named Lilia went to the dressing room and saw me in both pairs of pants & helped me make a decision. I really appreciate that!! I saw a griddle in their ad that I wanted. I went there and they helped me very quickly and efficiently. I was out within five minutes.

We came in for all three of my kids for all their soccer gear, and everyone at this store was super nice, we felt so bad because we tried on 10 pairs of cleats and they didn't complain or make us feel bad, they were nice kept bringing whatever they had in stock in a half size, the cashier was very very sweet... thanks big 5 we definitely will be back to this store!!!! read more

My husband and I went in this morning specifically for some throw blankets we saw in this weeks ad not realizing that the sale didn't start for 2 days. I have been looking for a particular pair of Hi Tec hiking boots for the past year. I did not want to order any online because I wanted to make sure they were a good fit. I went to this Big 5 store without having any expectation that I would find what I was looking for. While I was looking at their boot selection I was asked by an employee if I needed any help. I said no, but then wait a minute, yes I could use some help. I have been looking for a model of Hi Tec boots that have been rather elusive. He went to check the back room, could not find them. Then he checked all of the boxes in the clearance section. Then he checked the stores computer and said, the computer shows that we have one pair of those boots in your size. He went back to the store room and after about 10 minutes came out with the boots I have been looking for. Yay!! In total this employee spent about 20 minutes helping me that resulted in finding the exact boots I have been looking for. These days this type if customer service is rare. 5 stars for this Big 5 Sporting Goods in Modesto, CA having a gatekeeper remind customers to keep 6 feet apart before entering store. I applaud their leadership saving lives and keeping employees employed. I bought some awesome training shoes and a chin up power tower to decompress my bulging herniated discs. Pain relief is real. A customer wearing an Oakland Raiders face mask violated my air space. He had his young daughter with him otherwise I would have chastised him to keep your distance. read more

A HIGH FIVE TO BIG FIVE (CRAPPOLA RATING= 5) I usually don't go to BIG FIVE too much, since it is a lot like the "BIG LOTS" of Sporting Goods, and now I have minimal sporting needs. But when it is White Elephant Gift Time, well this is a good place to grab a knife/screwdriver combo, or another crapo thing-a-ma-bob gift. The White Elephant rules of my workplace X-mas party set the cost at $10-15 (and it is a challenge at the last minute, to find something that people will not dread, AND MAY WANT TO STEAL!). This BIG FIVE fulfills that exacting law of the Holy White Elephant, and furthermore, right next door, there is a Party Supply store, with a nice small gift bag for 59 big cents! BIG FIVE is BIG on cheapo knives, air guns, slingshots, and other crap that your mother would never buy you as a kid...because it was too dangerous. Mother was right of course, but now that I can buy anything I want, the thrill is gone, and quite boringly, I wind up buying what I need! BIG FIVE also helps out with another annoying problem that I have. There seems to a mysterious roving black hole in my house, that always seems to suck-up pocket knives, letter openers, pens, portable camping salt/pepper shakers, and whatever else that I may need. No matter how many pocket knives or folding razor blades that I buy, they always disappear. My wife also hates them for some reason and also hides them...and come to think of it, I think she also snatches my pens too! It does not seem to matter how many knives or pens I buy, nor how much they cost. There are never around when I need them. Besides that, the other stuff in the store has gone down in quality BIG time over the past FIVE years, matching the BIG CRAPPY ECONOMY. So yes, they have cheap sneakers in the back, but I do mean cheap, as in cheap crap! If you need the good stuff, well I have to go all the way to the Bay Area or even SF (e.g., New Balance store), use Amazon, Sports Authority, or other places for that. Decent place when I am in the market for new shades as they have the best and least cost-prohibitive options for polarized varieties. The store though is a bit disorganized when it comes to staffing. Often times I am standing at the locked glasses case for a while before someone notices I need help or I have to go to the checkout counter to get them to call someone over to help me. Forgot how much I loved big5's! They have pretty much every sport all crammed into to one small space. Picked up some decent work shoes non slip with a great price tag. Customer service was fast n friendly and check out was easy. Picked up some paintballs as well which are behind the gun counter and it was simple the associate knew a little about the different paintballs and quality of function which was nice. I was in Big 5 this afternoon and will never return. Andrea, the cashier was extremely rude. I needed to use the ATM machine, but there was a shirt on top of it. She didn't move it. There was a huge box that needed to be moved also in order to stand in front of the machine. She refused to move it. I had to!! She was also very curt and unfriendly. I'm going to return the shorts. Not a fun experience buying the clothes that I enjoy so much. Would rather go anywhere else and get a happy friendly face :). Pretty simple. Been here twice now and can't say I'm impressed. Not that Big 5's are impressive but, some are definitely better than others. First trip was last June for hunting licenses. Took longer than it should have. Staff seemed a little unfamiliar with the automated system the state uses now (glad I didn't have to use this place during the good ole analog days.) Second was very recently. Needed some cheap, rough use shoes for one of my rougher boys. Totally amazed to see NO shoes on sale AT ALL. Quite a few empty spaces on their wall as well. Today I was helped in the shoe department and it took over 30 minutes to get a pair of boots. The lady that was helping me also had other customers, which is understandable, but she didn't ask for help. I needed a different size from what I was brought. I was standing there waiting and other employees were walking out of the back and I asked if they could help me and the said no because they weren't in that department. A skinny, hispanic man came out of the back and walked over to help the other employee and lady. Like seriously, I know he saw me waiting, even when he walked into the back area when he came from the front. He finally walked passed me and asked if I needed something. So I told him she had brought me 2 pair and I wanted a different size. He didn't hear me and rudely asked "what did you just say?" So I repeated myself and told him I wanted .5 and full size bigger. He only brought me a .5. After trying them on, I need a bigger size. I heard him laughing and talking in the back so I walked over and asked him to bring me a different size. He rolled his eyes and said "sure". So when he came back out, he set the box down with an attitude and said "here ya go". I rarely shop at the store but I was told by my employees to get my work boots there for a cheap price. I was happy with the price of the boots but I was displeased with the service I received. I honestly would love to keep going there for summer activity supplies and work items BUT I don't know if I'd appreciate the poor service again. I was in desperate need of a tent for an impromptu camping trip. Ordering online was out of the question due to the extreme express shipping rates. I tried walmart, bass pro, target, and dicks and to them, tents either come in the less than $40 flimsy or greater than $120 professional (for some reason bass pro thinks that because it looks like an amusement park it will make me blind to the exorbitant prices) . On top of this lack of price range, their lack of selection was terrible too (you have 3 tents to chose from and majority were family sized when I only needed a two person). Then I come to big 5. I had several option and a variety of capacities to chose from. They even carried the tent I would have purchased online! Overall, I am very pleased with this store ( I looked at some other items and found the selection and prices to be equally as impressive). While it doesn't boast waterfalls, fish tanks and taxidermy (I'm talking to you bass pro), it has everything you are looking for with more options and less money (I'm not a professional, I'm not climbing Everest, I don't need a $200 tent). I went there to go buy bullets today and I had to wait like 20 mins for someone to even go and help me... Possibly longer. Another person was waiting before and eventually got annoyed and left. Then once someone actually does come to help me they say they have to give me a background check which I didn't mind. Then they tell me they can't do it bc I don't have a real California ID or birth certificate with me. I know someone who went the exact same day and was able to get one using their regular Id so idk why I couldn't. According to them this is part of the new gun law but someone I know in law enforcement told me that wasn't true. NEVER going back to this store to buy ANYTHING again. Ok. I want to aplogize in advance for the rant I am about to post. I took Zachary to Big 5 in Modesto to find some shoes. The store was practically empty so I figured boy this ought to be easy. Was I wrong about that. After about 5 minutes Zachary found a pair he liked and we decided to ask for his size so he could try them on. That is when the hole thing turned. We could not locate anyone in the shoe area so he went up front and they said someone would be right with us. So we waited and waited as I could see several employees just talking and laughing and even had one walk right by us and go in the back. After about 20 minutes Zachary went up front again and we got the same story as I was still seeing people just standing around. They told him they were really busy and someone would be with us shortly. I guess the job to look for shoes requires a lot of special training. I told Zachary we would go somewhere they appreciated our business. As we were walking out past the employees standing around I advised them we were leaving and going somewhere that valued us as a customer. First out of this one little punk I got a OH WELL and when I advised him I was going to contact his Corp office he replied GOOD LUCK WITH THAT and the girl at the counter just smirked. I got home and called the store and spoke with the true manager of the store as she was not aware that anything had taken place or that she was not contacted about needing more help on the floor. She apologized as she was in the office and no one contacted her about anything. I will never ever give Big 5 another penny no matter what. I value customer service and feel even if you are thinking it you should never ever say it. You never know who may be a potential employer and they will remember the service they received from you. I am now finished ranting. I thought maybe it would be a better experience but lol the joke was on me for even thinking about coming back to this store. read more

Shopped today and everything was great! The prices of work boots were fantastic and On Sale. Also we bought 2 pairs of tennis shoes just because they were $19.99 each. The 2 men that were working the shoe department were dressed very nicely. One had a bow tie and the other was wearing a tie and sweater. The clothing was the first thing I noticed and I thought that was awesome. It's nice to see employees actually dressed nice for their jobs! I shop here all the time. And have had a lot of different experiences with different associates. Jennifer D is a TERRIBLE manager and should not hold a job in customer service. She has been moved to the Manteca location (probably because of complaints). I have seen her just stand at the register and gossip with the cashier while I asked for help. Then rudely pointed to the back, like I was an idiot child and said someone is back there. Went back to her conversation and didn't offer any help. Clearly she was too busy to be bothered. Irene on the other hand is incredibly helpful and courteous. She is a manager and yet surprisingly she is not 'too good' to actually help customers in any department. She helped us in shoes, then at the gun counter, and then rang us out!!! She offered to sign us up on the email listing for coupons which has saved us tons of money, with the kids in sports. Aaron is a five star customer service employee. Don't let his relaxed demeanor distract you. He knows his stuff and is extremely helpful. My son needed new shoes. They didn't have the ones he wanted but Aaron brought out some styles similar and we walked away with a second pair for the sale price. read more

Went in here today to purchase football cleats for my son. It's our first year playing so yes I had a few questions. I waited 15 mins before I had to ask for someone to help. They sent a guy over who clearly hates his job. I asked him to measure my sons foot. He said 7. So I picked a few different shoes he was bothered he had to go look. Came back with a 8.5 and told me that's all they had. He told me he my son has a weird shoe size so it's going to be too hard to find him a cleat. I then said out of all the cleats you have here, you don't have 1 that will fit him? He rolled his eyes and said I guess I can look. He went in the back and I left. Horrible customer service! The store is a mess, shoes displayed with no prices or information, everything unorganized. At checkout, the manager Samantha forgot to put an item in the bag. We didn't realize until we were on the freeway that our very inexpensive item was not in the bag. We called and Samantha argued that she did indeed put it in the bag, essentially calling us liars. Then she realized it was sitting on the counter and told us we could come back to pick it up. I asked her what she could do for us for the massive inconvenience and she said there was nothing she could do. She couldn't credit my card unless I came back, she couldn't offer me a discount or any additional compensation if I did come back into the store to pick it up. She told me I could call corporate if I didn't like it. Not even an apology was uttered. Clearly this manager is not worried about losing business, and we will never shop here again. read more
