I am amazed how great the customer service is at Play It Again Sports. Chris, the manager, texted me that he had an elliptical machine he wanted to donate. I knew of a place (Howard Prep in Ceres, Ca) that helps out young adults with mental and physical disabilities, and he donated the machine to Howard Prep. Not only did he donate that piece of equipment to help the disabled, his knowledge to help me select other pieces of equipment to develop a great program for these individuals with mental disabilities is phenomenal. He assured me that he would give me the best price for additional equipment to stay within my budget to create a great experience for Howard Prep. This post is based on my past visits to Play It Again Sports in Modesto, Stockton & Dublin. I visited the Dublin store about a month ago and it was closed down--out of business. I'm not a big fan of Play It Again Sports because of the high prices. That's right, Play It Again Sports has high prices! IMO, used sports equipment should be priced lower than the prices you find at big box stores like a Walmart, or even at Big 5. I admit that Play It Again Sports have lower prices than the same gear bought new. My view is these prices should be significantly lower than new equipment, not just a little lower than new. That's what I saw when I visited those three stores. It's not surprising that I haven't purchased many items (maybe 3) from Play It Again Sports, and I could've easily bought 10X that, from golf clubs to baseball gloves/bats to weights. Though it's not bizarre seeing legitimate retailers posting ads on Craigslist, it IS bizarre seeing these same legitimate retailers participating in price gouging during the pandemic (you'd expect some level of integrity, especially now). Was looking to fill-in the gaps for my dumbbell set in the garage & saw "Rubber Hex Dumbbells In Stock" for "Play It Again Sports" in the search results on Craigslist. Assumed this was a refreshing change to the absurd pricing for even 5-10 lb dumbbells considering "Play it Again Sports" was name-dropped in the advertisement. NOPE... Not only are they too being opportunists during the pandemic (at least the Modesto location), but they are charging 2-3x what you'd expect to pay online once the frenzy cools down/fitness gear eventually replenished. Some examples of their "COVID-19" pricing model: 80 lb Dumbbells (EACH) @ $200 85 lb Dumbbells (EACH) @ $212.50 90 lb Dumbbells (EACH) @ $225 Again, pricing is PER DUMBBELL (USED) & NOT sold as a pair (& yes, I called the store to confirm, since I wanted to hear it with my own ears). For perspective? The Cream of the Crop Rogue Fitness dumbbells (using BRAND NEW 90's for example) are all sold as a PAIR & are ~$200 for BOTH. Same goes for REP Fitness, Titan Fitness (who ship free), etc... Play It Again Sports, however, is charging (tax not included), $2.50/lb (USED, no-less) which is ABSURD. Even paying shipping costs for Rogue or REP, you're still nowhere near that $ (then again, they are capitalizing on the pandemic, considering the aforementioned companies are either back ordered or out of stock). I've been fortunate to buy all of my gear @ retail (during the pandemic), signing up for stock notifications on Rogue's site or placing backorder's on Titan's (some backorder options can even be placed over the phone). I was just hoping (since this was Play It Again Sports), that they would be "better than that," selling @ retail (as Rogue, REP & Titan have continue to do), despite the global gear shortage (Gym equipment now being the new "toilet paper" or "hand sanitizer"). POST-COVID REVIEW: Weights are hard to come by these days with gyms being closed. My boyfriend saw a craigslist ad for some brand new weights being sold here for a decent price (compared to others sold on Craigslist), so we drove the hour all the way out there to be able to get our fitness on at home! Everyone in the store were wearing masks (properly, might i add). The young man who helped us was really friendly and helped load the car with the heavy boxes of weights in the humid, 100+ degree weather. Thank you again! Haven't seen a Play It Again Sports store in ages, honestly thought they were all gone, but I was glad we stumbled upon it. I would look elsewhere if you are looking for a deal on sporting equipment, as many people do. You might save a couple of dollars shopping at Play-it-Again Sport (maybe not); the savings is doubtfully worth the risk of losing your money if your purchases don't work out. This company has a five-day return window for purchased merchandise, which is ridiculously short, and if you happen to lose your receipt, there is "nothing they can do for you." As the less-than-helpful clerk, Nathaniel, informed me today. When I went into their store last week, I thought I would support local businesses, but I was disappointed because I couldn't find everything I was looking for, and the things I found didn't fit. Then when I went to return the merchandise today, I was told that I was out of luck because I didn't have the original receipt and there was nothing they could do. They could have helped me if they wanted, but they didn't. I ended up buying what I needed on Amazon for less than what I paid at Play-it-Again, and if anything doesn't fit, I have 30 days to return it. Over the years I have bought, sold and traded with Play It Again enjoying friendly service, and reasonable prices. While there is some inherent risk in dealing with used items I had not experienced any negative issues. In February this year I bought a used pair of snowboard boots for my son, and went to Bear Valley within a week of the purchase. Unfortunately, the soles of both boots de laminated and fell off. When we returned home, I went back to Play It Again to request a refund. The boots were $69, and unfortunately my 14 year old son had misplaced the receipt. The sales associate at the counter appeared helpful at first, but when I admitted not having my receipt, he said there wasn't anything he could do. I suggested that he look me up in their rewards system since I had received a $20 rewards credit on my purchase, but he responded that they do not have visibility to customers past purchases. He did volunteer to call a manager, and spent several minutes on the phone, only to repeat that there was nothing they can do without a receipt. Irritated, I responded that it was disappointing that they wouldn't work with me especially since I had recently spend more than $300 on baseball bats. As I exited the the store, I was followed by an employee who introduced himself as John, and who i later discovered as the owner. John stated that they would be happy to give a store credit, and that I had to have a receipt. I questioned the record keeping ability of their registers and the rewards system, and John denied that they had purchase records. When I showed John the defective boots, his response was, "that's the risk you take buying used merchandise." I returned home and searched high and low for the receipt... while unable to find it, I did find other Play It Again receipts that clearly include customer name and customer ID number, which seems to indicate that Play It Again does in fact keep details of customers purchases. Fortunate for me, I paid for these boots with my Visa and was able to successfully dispute the charge. Unfortunate was the poor customer service and deception by Play It Again. Buy at your own risk, and don't lose your receipt. As for me, I'll be shopping elsewhere. read more

Covid Incubator! While recently shopping at this location I was shocked and concerned with how many people in the store were not wearing masks including two employees. During this time of a pandemic you would think they would want to stay as safe as possible and provide a safe space for customers. The one younger employee was wearing a mask and I feel for him having to work around others who are ok with putting his life in danger. The service I received was fine and friendly but the lack of safety or consideration from the workers not wearing masks or requiring customers to wear masks when the sign on the front door clearly states masks are required is beyond me. We are so disappointed with the response from this store regarding the purchase of a recumbent bike that did not work straight out of the box. We have been lied to and given the run around, told the day after the purchase that we had to schedule a repair for a brand new bike. Both the store and Schwinn have been terrible to work with, the tech who showed up told us that he has worked on many of this model with the same issue, so basically they are selling bikes that they know are defective. The bike is not usable, but Play It Again Sports won't do anything to help?!?! read more

This place is an absolute joke!.. I came in and bought about $400 worth of equipment.. Upon check out I notice I was charged more than what the Register total showed.. I questioned the guy and he said, they add 2.5% of the purchase price if you pay with a card.. I asked why he didn't inform me of that before charging me, he said, that's their policy.. Then I point out the sign clearly posted at the register that says "WE OFFER A 2.5% DISCOUNT FOR CASH PAYING CUSTOMERS".. NO where does it say if you don't pay with cash we are going to add 2.5% to your total price.. If this is the store policy, 1) it's ridiculous 2) I'll never shop this place again 3) I'll encourage anyone I know to avoid this place and 4) INFORM YOUR CUSTOMERS YOU ARE ADDING TO THE TOTAL COST PRIOR TO CHARGING THEM THIS MADE UP B.S. It really surprises me a place like this stays around with the internet and eBay. I like the idea of supporting local business, and the idea of reusing sporting food that would otherwise end up in a landfill. However, don't expect to get much for your used items, of course you get more from store credit, but then your forced to overpay for what they carry. So your not really coming out ahead. The used items are cheaper than new obviously, but not priced as customer friendly as you'd expect. The new items consist of mostly mediocre brands at full retail. I found children's snow bibs when not even big five had any in stock ( a few days before Christmas). The price was a little high, but their selection in color, style and size made up for it. I looked around and their other snow gear like boots are pricey for used---- and their used is really really used. I wouldn't buy it. Check craigslist first for better deals! They have lots of great exercise equipment but a little high priced for used in my opinion. I am giving them 4 stars for customer service, selection and store hours. I went in a few weeks ago for my special needs 6 years old to get him his football gear. Obviously, I never played football and my son is non verbal but Tyler was AMAZING. He interacted with my son and was more than happy to answer any of my questions about gear, football and what to expect at this age for a first time player. I decided to buy the NordicTrack 8.5s based off his recommendations and my needs . I couldn't of been more happy and to top it off , it was cheaper than other retail outlets , it was put together for pick up out front the next morning and I was out of there in 10 min. We have been shopping for a home gym because Fit Republic in our area closed. We interviewed several gyms and were not very impressed. Crowded and some not very clean. We went to PLAY IT AGAIN SPORTS in Modesto and spoke to the Owner, John Vargas. John was awesome to talk to and very informative. We purchased a home gym system, BODY SOLID GB6. John gave us an awesome deal matching and beating internet prices. John delivered the gym to our doorstep. We are all set up and have been using it for about a month. Absolutely love the GB6! Super smooth and easy to move to various exercises. We have already ordered the inner/outer leg attachment. If you are considering a home gym or are tired of traveling to a crowded gym and not liking cleanliness of equipment, etc, consider the GB6. And stop by PLAY IT AGAIN SPORTS and talk to John. I understand that businesses want spaces available for their customers, but do you really think it's beneficial to leave a "courtesy tow notice" on my car right after I walk away? I parked around 5:45, and the notice as written at 5:45! Not to mention, there were plenty of other people who parked by me and went into the gym, and NONE of them had any towing notices. I park in this parking lot every time I go to InShape, just like a lot of other people, and I have never had this issue. I saw staff standing outside before I walked away and I honestly would've moved if a one of them asked me to. If it was busy I would understand, but it was a little over an hour before your store's closing time. I don't think Play It Again Sports is going to get swarmed on a Thursday night before closing. I wish I could give more than five stars, because my experience at Play-It-Again Modesto, specifically with the manager Paul, has been nothing short of incredible. I called in earlier last week looking for thin 45 pound plates. They put two on reserve for me and I came down to the store to find it completely stocked with high-quality, affordable products. For those who deadlift over 700 pounds, like me, the width of plates is extremely important. They must fit on a bar. Play-It-Again had those plates, bumpers, and an array of other weight lifting equipment. I purchased a power rack and Paul helped me throughout the entire process, from purchase to next-day installation at my house. Paul was incredibly helpful and did a great job helping me set up my "home gym". Paul came over to my house the day after I purchased the rack and set it up in less than 2 hours. Paul has been absolutely wonderful and I would not have the perfect set-up I wanted without his help. He is definitely an individual that would, in and of himself, make me want to visit the store again. I would suggest starting here and trying other sports equipment stores in the area. Play it again sports came through for me , I had a home gym no one was using in the house and thought I would sell the gym on Craig's list after getting lots of calls and no one came through with the cash I called Play it again sports. They sent a team to disassemble the unit and take to store , that alone was worth it because it took them awhile and I think if I did it it would've been days . This is a decent place to get sports equipment. A very big selection for such a small store and you can find most anything you need. So why the three-star review? It's because the used goods are overpriced. Please be sure to check online websites prior to buying used items here, I was able to find what I needed new for cheaper than what it was being sold for used in this store. I also noticed a lot of the used items were covered in dust with quit a few rusted pieces of equipment. At the very least, used items should be cleaned up before being sold. read more

I've been here a few times already by recommendation of a co worker. They sell new and used equipment for anything from baseball to soccer. I wasn't really sure that they would have what I was looking for however; after making several trips to the location I eventually traded in my Mike Maniac for a Easton Bomb Squad Brett Helmer Slowpitch Softball bat. When I first saw it was instantly "I gotta find some way to get this bat" Even the fact that it was a 2016 model I still think it's a quality bat and to get it at the price I did was very good. I also purchased two softballs for my upcoming Men's Softball League however; I'll be sure to purchase more as time goes on. Overall, good customer service and a friendly staff. I went in recently to purchase some weight equipment, and I was really impressed by the selection available. Lots of things you can't find in the other sporting goods stores in the area. I settled on a squat rack for 1/4 the price I'd find it new, and John was good enough to not only loan me tools to take it apart and fit it in the car, but even went so far as to walk down the street and buy me a new set of bolts when we found the old ones were too rusty.
