A wide selection of apparel. Bought shorts and jogging pants. The store is organized. Had what I needed in russell, adidas and under armor.

I mean the reviews here are not wrong - the store is staffed by people who just want a job - not people who are knowledgeable in sports stuff, camping stuff, etc. But it's like that at every Big 5. Trust me, you know more about the equipment the people who work here. Personally I can't stand being greeted by every employee when I walk in (the old Blockbuster factor) but that's just me. That said, because the employees here don't actually care about customer service, I like that I can look around the shoes section and not be bothered by someone (a lot of times they'll have what I want right there on the shelf). Also I can come in quickly and get camping stuff I need real quick (like propane for the stove). I don't come here often at all but when I do, I'm in and out. read more

Went to get a soccer ball for my 6 n 8 yr old! As they were looking through it with my husband i asked them i need to use the restroom- considering i am 7 months pregnant and in the middle of a transaction they said no. The girl on front desk was kind to ask the person in charge - and that person said no! I told him its and emergency and i am pregnant! (OBVIOUSLY showing in this term) and he said no i cant allow u in! I have worked in a bank as well previously! With money vaults at the back! We never said no to someone pregnant! Visited them today for me to buy an ammo for my 22 plinking small rifle. The sales staff in Ammunitions Kayla was so helpful and very very knowledgable among the staff. This is my 2nd time coming in the store because I'm confused with that new law on background check, that's needs to be log in in DOJ etc...the other sales staff explained to me matbr a little bit not complete but Kayla straightened it out and explained to me in a brief but complete procedures and I'm out of the store in no time vety happy. read more

I came in the today with my daughter to purchase soccer shoes. As we walked through the door, we were greeted by Fred with a friendly smile and "Welcome in!" We spent well over half and hour trying multiple soccer shoes and different sizes. Fred was super helpful and patient with my daughter in finding the right fit. I also observed him helping other customers and he was just as helpful and professional as he was with us. We would come back to this particular store again because of the level of customer service provided by Fred. read more

I just left this store and was disappointed in the customer service I received. Although I will return this store needs customer service training. I went in looking for an item and had some difficulty find it. I was going between items to find the right size. Instead of asking if I needed help (which I did) the store employee simply followed me around the store. Being who I am I asked her if she was following me. Never had a positive experience here but keep going back because sometimes you just have to have what they sell. The incompetent and ill- informed kids at the counter are usually chatting among themselves and seem inconvenienced to ring up your merchandise. The manager is usually unavailable or too busy to respond to a call and then surly and arrogant when she finally shows up, brusque and dismissive. I don't think I've ever met a straight forward racist, ever, until I went to this location. And if you haven't either and would like to, go here and look for MATTHEW. Shouldn't be hard to miss, he's probably not too old, maybe in his 30s but has a badly receding hairline, he's practically bald, and he's Caucasian. Went here to exchange some shoes and purchased a rain suit. The associate that helped me, by the way, her name was Natalie, she was the sweetest ever. She gave excellent customer service. So I got the items, went to the cashier to exchange/purchase. The cashier had to call the manager to do the exchange. The manager was someone I also happened to ask last minute, about some thermals and she pointed where they were. So after the manager left, and I paid for the items, I had the cashier verify the location of the thermals because again because i wasn't sure where they were. I got the thermals and went to the register again to purchase. That's when I was faced with this sad excuse of a being, who frankly, should not even be in the customer service business. Never mind the fact that the last time I was there to buy the item I came to exchange, (he was also my cashier) he was a total perv, flirting with one of the associates, right in front of customers. Not that there was a better time for that inappropriate behavior, but seriously, how is this guy still working there?? So I gave the thermal and added a couple of knick knacks for my little ones. He even said they were on sale for a dollar cheaper, but rang it up regular price, and he said, "I guess it's not on sale". I had to point out that there was a sign that said so. And he adjusted the price. And then after I paid, he asked if I needed a bag. I said I didn't, and he could just put my items in my reusable bag that already had the other stuff I purchased 5 minutes earlier. And that's when king racist revealed what he really felt. This rogaine-needing isolent had the audacity to ask me for my receipt! I actually didn't even get what he meant because I assumed he would be the one giving me MY receipt from the thermal and knick knacks. But no, he withheld the receipt and the items I just purchased. I asked him, why he needed my receipt and what reason did I give him to do so? Like do I look like a thief?? Seriously, why would I even present him my bag to put the items in if I didn't already own whatever else was in the tote bag. And I already spent twenty dollars, why would I buy something and steal something else? That makes no sense. And then he had the nerve to answer back and say, "well you haven't given me reason to think the items are paid for", like wtf?!! And that's when I realized, he's a plain ole scum, and is definitely not on my level, not even worth another moment of my time. I looked at him calmly and said, I'd like to speak to your manager. She came over, of course she recognized me, and of course she knows I paid for all those items, heck, she put them in my bag. I asked her if they make it a policy to check their customer's bags and receipts. She said no. And I said well, he just asked to do just that. She profusely apologized and said she would talk to him. He didn't even apologize for the obvious discrimination. I have never been so offended in my life. That was just appalling. He should be more than reprimanded, he should not be working in customer service until he overcomes his supremacist issues. read more

Bunch of idiots. I called store asking if they had kerosene, the girl had never heard of it, I explained what it was, she placed me on hold, and 10 minutes later she confirmed they had it in stock. Drove 30 minutes out of my way to go here for the kerosene. Arrived, was met by a dumbfounded young man who had never heard of kerosene either. Long story short, they do not carry kerosene. The girl recommended I try butane instead... I couldnt believe my ears. If you work at an outdoors store, this should not be new information. Truly in shock. I went in to buy a 22 an hour and a half before the store closed because, from prior experience I knew it takes most stores about 20-30 min. to do the paperwork for a firearms sale. By the time I got the employees attention and finally got the manager off her cell phone and ready to sell me the gun I had about an one hour and twelve minutes until close. The manager then lied to me and told me that it took an hour to do the paperwork for the firearms sale. I then pulled out my phone and showed her that she had an hour and fifteen minutes to complete the task that should only take 20-30 min. The then changed her mind and decided that it should take her an hour and a half to do the paperwork. I felt disrespected because I knew i was being told a boldface lie. It doesn't take an hour and a half to sell a firearm, not even in California. If she was more straightforward with me, I would have understood. I will certainly never shop at this location again. But she straight up lied to me, and then shamelessly changed her story to another lie. This happened at 6:45PM on Feb 11th, 2018. read more

Typical big 5 store. It has all the regular items.... But the 1star rating comes from the customer service at this store. Horrible Horrible Horrible! There was a worker and a customer yelling at each other across the store. I know there are some customers that are just hard to deal with and I would agree that THAT customer was one of them. But the worker just agitated the situation even more. Also, the cashier was the worst! We were standing at the cashier and the worker comes walking in. She didn't say anything! No "Hi" or "How are you" ABSOLUTELY NOTHING! She just scans our items and tells us the total. Then when we asked her about one of our items that we thought was on sale. She just looked at it and said absolutely nothing. We stared at her for a while then she changed it on the computer a little angry and told us the new total. We paid and left. Nothing else was said. ARGH Honestly! I can't stand this kind of customer service! I will never come back to this big 5. I rather drive down san pablo and go to that one. read more

This store has got to be one of the most poorly managed stores that I have ever been to in my entire life. They have workers just standing around or sitting around staring at customers until someone stares at them, then they offer help. And rude! just plain rude workers. If a customer doesn't hear you correctly after you ask them to wait outside until their number is called, have some patience and/or repeat yourself and talk in a nice manner. Don't shout at them and tell the to "get out of the store until I call your number." This store needs a whole new staff. PERIOD. read more

Went in Sunday night to get a few things that I needed. When I walked in there were three people around the register just talking and laughing including the security. They didn't offer any type of customer service. They did say hi. As I was paying they were still just talking amoung themselves and laughing. As I was walking out the door I over heard one of the girls begin talking about me. Bad customer service. Love the shoes!! Shoes, shoes, shoes,,, great selection and great deals!! Tonight, near closing time, my son and I came across some super deals! We also got an additional discount at the register!! Thank you Rubi! The cashier Rubi and the security guard were both super pleasant and helpful as was the young gentleman in the shoe department. I always purchase athletic shoes for myself and my son here! ( larger men's sizes are easily available) I have also purchased crocks & sandals, insoles and socks as well as basketballs, pumps, and other sports equipment & gear. I am always very happy with the quality and deals we find. It is usually not crowded (in the early evenings) and is a quick stop with a welcoming ambiance. If you visit this Big Five, do so because the prices are WAY better than most other sporting good stores. I had to buy camping gear for my child's camping trip and saved so much money. The service is pretty bad, though. I was there with a big armful of stuff to buy, looking at my list, and not ONCE did someone come up to ask me if I needed any assistance. And then at the counter, they were having some kind of prob with one of the registers, so they had another guy come and ring me up. And he took his good.old.fashioned. TIME. He also left the shoplifting tag on a pair of hiking boots, as I discovered when I got home. The other employees that work there looked really tired and over it , or lackadaisical and devil-may-care. I guess I'll be the first... I always like looking through the Big 5 ad that comes in my mail every once a week or so. Apparently they're always having "huge sales" on shoes and what not, but shoes that aren't my preference. The things I do purchase there, however, are sporting good type of stuff: exercise mat, dumbbells, tennis balls, etc. My most recent purchase was a (suspension) Gerber tool for $30. That Big 5 has seen alot of my business. The staff there are friendly (enough) and will ask you if you need help. The only gripe I have about this place is some of the things are unorganized (for instance, clothes) and everything is cramped. They also need to brighten up the interior - as soon as I enter that store I'm dead tired. Overall, Big 5 on Fitzgerald is a safe place to purchase your sporting gear. read more

So I was very disappointed by the Big 5 in Alameda and needed to exchange my sandals. I found out that the Pinole Big 5 store had the size I needed so went out there. What a difference. This place was GREAT. The store was clean and organized. More than one sales associate offered help; I was waited on promptly and got exactly what I went for with no hassle. THE STAFF WAS HELPFUL AND FRIENDLY. FANTASTIC CUSTOMER SERVICE - HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. WILL DEFINETLY GO BACK TO THIS STORE. read more

From a fishing point of view, this store has a few items. What's special though is that they regularly stock some nicely made fishing rods: Penn Stoker Pro Sabre, Sabre Pacifica, Stokers, and the yellow Sabre Classics. To me these are some of the better values in fishing rods. These are boat rods but many people can use them for big sturgeon and bat rays. But I've seen trolling versions, stubby offshore versions, and even deckhand rods from these makes. And often times, they go on sale for under $40. I don't think many other Big 5's in the area stock up on these rods. Once in a while the store will have a bargain bin full of a bunch of junk. Sometimes there's a diamond in the rough there. read more

We were ready to go on vacation when my hubby thought that water shoes like the one I have could be useful in case of a pebbly sea bottom. We left earlier to go to the airport and stopped at the Pinole location. Sign was saying OPEN 9:30 AM. At 9:35 AM a lady showed up with the keys to open the store. She gave us a surprised look and without saying good morning or smiling she told us that store opens at 10 AM. We pointed out the sign to her and she said " Oh! No, this is referring to the last week schedule" removing the sign clearly irritated for our remark. Then she went inside the store and closed the door without another word. We then stopped at a big chain place where an associate greeted us with a smile and a good morning and helped us finding what we were looking for with the very same price. Literally the same shoes. If the lady with the store keys is the manager I would like to suggest her a better supervision of the store and mostly important a review of her customer service skills. Possibly one of the worst Big 5 locations I have ever been to. The entire store layout was poorly organized that it was hard to find anything here. There where shoes being displayed everywhere, random articles of clothing displayed everywhere and random sports needs you need which lacked a particular spot so it was hard to find. Because of this layout the place seemed more crowded and disorganized. Customer service here was also terrible, there was one cashier at the front (who looked to be in her teens), didn't great customers as they walked in and didn't seem to enjoy her job much. If you are looking for people around to help you, good luck with that cos I saw no one on the sales floor at all. This is a two star review only for the day that it is close by but everything else was terrible. Major improvements need to happen before I will be coming back here again. read more

I called to find out on how to apply for the gun safety test and the manager told me to make a appointment to come the next day. When I showed up she responded that we are to busy and come back Saturday or Sunday. How does this work when the manager couldn't fulfill her part. This was a waste of my time as I have a very tight schedule for work and family time. They need to work with the customers timing not theirs. I went in to do, but I thought it was a simple return. I had an extremely rude cashier by the name of Brianna assistant me with my return. Brianna shouldn't work in customer service environment because of her nasty attitude. I simply wanted to return some unused out door game WITH THE Receipt. After the transaction was just about complete Brianna said to me ( the customer) I hope you have a better day in a VERY nasty ton. I asked Brianna for her name and the name of her district manager's name. Brianna, then said " do you want me to spell it for you"? I then told her, she should thank the customer for shopping at Big 5, instead of forming any judgment on their customers. I reached out to Big 5 customer service 800 number 7 days ago to inform the company of the poor customer service I received by Brianna. NO ONE FROM THIS COMPANY HAS REACHED OUT TO ME REGARDING THIS POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE! Went here on Saturday morning to find my son his tee ball pants and socks. When I asked the associate if they had any smaller sizes in the back she rudely responded "everything we have will be in the floor" I said "oh OK thank you" and I looked at her confusingly. Then as we were checking out she still had a attitude not even greeting us or anything. taking the hangers off and throwing them to the floor. She was speaking so fast and moving so fast like she was trying to rush us out. Might be the best Big 5 in the bay area. Things are a bit pricey but hey its a sporting goods store. My wife found a bathing suit there that fit her upstairs. lol finally. I got a nice powerful semi-auto BB shotgun there for $99 and the employee's I met were cool. They have a fully automatic "soft air" Tommy gun going for around $99 too. I will return. read more

I'd give them a zero star rating if available. A known problem with the printing out of their coupons could not be reconciled in the store although they knew this was a problem. The employees and managers are not empowered to make any exceptions to 'corporate' policies and when I complained to 'corporate' I received some half sincere apology and got a clear sense that nothing would be done to assure the problem would be handled any differently going foreward. On a separate issue, be aware that this store carries very little snow/ski gear although we receive sales flyers advertising helmet sales, etc. When I went out to El Cerrito store to get helmets, they had very few available and tried to push a similar helmet with no sale discount. Terrible customer service! So disappointing, you go in to make a purchase and as you get to the cash register to pay, the cashier has no customer service skills, no greeting or nothing. After ringing up my merchandise I proceed to pay with cash ($100 bill), to which she calls someone to the register to okay the purchase, I guess she thought my money was funny. Wow, is all I can say! I wasn't in a bad mood or else I would've taken my money and business elsewhere, probably to the El Cerrito location where they provide better customer service. She finished the transaction by handing me my change and receipt, there was no thank you or have a nice day with that. I didn't think much of my experience, that is until I saw what happened with the next customer in line. This cashier which was a white female then greeted the next customer in line behind me which happened to be white also, I guess by this point you probably figured out I'm not white; needless to say I will not be returning to this store and go to the store where my business is appreciated. Common courtesy and customer service skills go a long way, this establishment should train their employees in that department. Without customers you have no business to run, El Cerrito will be getting all my business from now on, If I could give a "0" star review believe me I would. Went there this morning and never again. Bianca Martinez is the rudest person and was a total B****. She is lucky I didn't reach across the counter and punch her in the face. If she doesn't want to work then quit but she really should be fired. I don't know how she got hired there.
