Mary's & Joe's are a beloved East Bay institution. From my first chuck taylors & Nikes and my little league Red Sox uniform in the mid 70s to my basketball and football gear in high school and college football gear in the 80s, I grew up loving grabbing my sports gear from them. Since I lived a few blocks away, it was always the best walking in there and smelling all the new gear, clothes, shoes, cleats, caps, gloves, etc. And super happy to see Mary's and Joe's kids have kept the business going after all these many years. I went in with my kid hoping to support a local business instead of ordering online. I was looking for a baseball mitt made without animal products. They didn't have what I was looking for, which is fine, it could have ended there with a smile and a wave. But instead, the two women proceeded to lecture me about my ethical choices using condescending language. I know the sports world isn't particularly kind to animals, but I didn't expect this level of hostility in people attempting to run a small business in the Bay Area. read more

I needed to get 2 plaques engraved on short notice, and the other local businesses said on their websites that this would take 8-10 days. I called Mary and Joe's on a Saturday morning, went in shortly after that, was given many options re the details (size, color, etc.), placed the order, and picked it up by the end of the day! The employees were courteous, the price was reasonable, and the plaques looked great. I used to buy my son's Little League uniforms and equipment here, and always found the store to be friendly, well-stocked, and reasonably priced. read more

I can't speak about the sporting good products at Mary and Joe's; they certainly look like they pack a lot of merchandise in their small store. However, I can share my experiences from May 2006 and May 2008, two occasions where I was hoping they could help me with engraving a metal plate that was part of a trophy. On the two occasions, I found the people that tried to help me to be curt at best and simply unbusiness-like at worst. Their engraving business may be doing very well (I believe they have do most of the trophies for all of the local kids' soccer teams) , but for a one-shot deal like mine I got the impression that I was imposing on them. I was reluctant to return to the store this year after my experience in 2006, but I thought I owed them another try. Now I don't expect to return there again. read more

Those who mention the curtness are right. I've experienced it 2x now. But if you're going in to get something off the shelf, they seem to have some good inventory. Customer service is not their forte. read more

I needed letters (names) put onto 2 canvas director's chair backs and called Mary & Joe's after being referred by another local business owner. All I can say is, "Wow." The people who helped me were delightful, from the time I called on the phone to the perfect job they did with the lettering on the canvas. We've been buying our baseball gear here for 5 years now, and they have always been great. They have been incredibly patient with 2 boys who are less than interested in trying on baseball pants, shirts, etc. and have almost always had the colors we need in stock. I can't imagine ever getting the same level of great service and advice at any of the big box stores. As long as my boys play baseball, we will be coming to Mary & Joe's! read more

It's a small sporting goods shop on San Pablo near Solano. When my daughter and I needed swim caps and goggles (yes, so attractive...) to start a swimming regimen, we came here. The woman who helped us was EXTREMELY nice and helpful and made sure we had equipment that was going to fit us. This is the kind of service I hope for! read more

A great little sporting goods store that, despite its size, always seems to have what I'm looking for. Even some more obscure stuff like football lineman's gloves. Mostly, though, we shop for baseball stuff and they always have the appropriate uniform colors and pieces. The staff is knowledgeable and friendly, if not overly gushy, and the prices are decent, sometimes very good. read more

I can't believe I've lived in Albany for nearly 8 years and just learned about Mary and Joe's. They were professional, very warm, helped my daughter pick out a bat, helmet, glove, and even remembered me when I went to back to pick up the glove oil that I accidentally forgot to take home with me. This is a wonderful store and a great alternative to the big box sporting good stores. We have made several purchases here for my daughter. It is a small space, but they have an amazing selection. We got plenty of helpful assistance when buying soccer cleats. Mary & Joe's also really came through when I realized belatedly that I had forgotten to order trophies for our soccer team. I called asking whether they carried them. Not only did they carry trophies, but they engraved the entire order (for free) and had them ready within 2 hours. You cannot beat kind of service! I see from other reviews that other people have experienced less than stellar customer service. Maybe they caught someone on a bad day. read more

I also had an experience at this store where I was yelled at. I've known about the store for years--mom and pop business handling all the high school sporting needs in the area. All good. However, the current owner is the daughter and she is a bit edgy. I bought a pedometer and when I took the plastic strip off the battery, the battery portion would not close. I did not want to force it, so took it back to the store. When the clerk showed it to the owner, I was told I had broken it and could not get a refund. When I tried to explain what had happened, the owner yelled at me and said I was a liar. She would not dialogue with me, but instead yelled over everything I tried to say. Then she ordered me out of the store. I said, no, I wasn't leaving until this was resolved, so she called the police. I sat down to wait for the police, and she ordered me to stand in the front of the store until they came. I explained that I was 60 years old and could not stand for long periods, so she began to bump the chair I was in, lifting it up to try to get me to move. Then she asked me if I was married, and when I refused to answer she said, "Oh he left you, huh? Yeah he left you." I asked for my credit receipt and she refused to cooperate. I asked her name and she refused to spell it for me. I went to the police station, and she had not called them, and the name she gave me was false. I have to agree with the former reviewers that the long time customers are treated well because of the familiarity, but new customers are not welcomed. read more

Mary and Joe is one the of most incompetent places I have ever been. It took 2 months to get 3 shirts embroidered. Every step of the way was horrible. When I asked for a cost estimate I was told, "I don't know." When I asked when the shirts would be finished I was told, "I don't know." I finally got the shirts and it is obvious they didn't know what was going on because the embroidery was so small and the stitches were so inconsistent it looked like it was hand sewn. Don't go there, they do not deserve your business. But if you like rude people that don't care, are over priced and take too long, these guys are right up your alley! read more

I went to Mary and Joe's as a referral from a previous client .. We ordered my daughters jacket Feb 23,2013 .. We did not get a CB letting us know there was a problem with the order .. We had to call the store owner Kelly back in April to inquiry what the hold up was .. She was very nonchalant .. explaining there was an issue with the manufacture ?? They do nothing in house ! All letter , or any logos must be sent to another location out of the area ...I requested the jacket be returned to us As now it has been 3months since we initially paid the deposit for the jacket ! Needless to say this is May and my daughter a senior ,still has no Lettermans Jacket !! We are now in the process of going elsewhere ! Horrible service .. read more
