Great store and friendly owner! We were going to a different pet store to find our favorite dog food. When we moved to Granada Hills we checked this one out. The owner told us that Fromm has a promotion that every 12 bags you buy you get one free. The old store never told us that! Also, in addition to that, there's a rewards program where you get 5% back. The prices aren't higher than the old store so we feel the owner is looking out for us. As far as dog foods go, you have hard to find stuff and familiar name brands from Petsmart and such but you won't see really cheap stuff from discount warehouses. Besides you don't want to feed that to your best friend anyway. Ps. We found out he carries chicken feed. Good to know since we want to get some chick's soon. Pps. He also has rat food. Big Al's Feed and Pet is my favorite pet store ever and I don't even live remotely close by. My local pet store is great, but unfortunately they don't carry the same selection as Big Al's, plus the employees are super knowledgeable and incredibly helpful which is rare these days. I had been taking my dog to the vet almost every several WEEKS for anal gland issues (sorry TMI) and of course, the vet would always ask about his diet. I had my dog on pumpkin, kefir, yogurt, apple puree, glandex, psyllium husk, you name it and things would slightly improve, but not by much. It wasn't until I walked into Big Al's, probably visibly defeated, and was approached by a very friendly employee who I thought was FOR SURE going to sell me the brand he was wearing. I actually thought he worked for Open Farm because he was wearing a jacket with the logo, but after asking me a series of questions about my concerns and also about my budget, he recommended me something completely different! He put me onto Bones and Co. raw food and while I was initially hesitant because raw feeding is typically more expensive than what I'm used to, he assured me that even adding a little bit of raw food to my dog's diet would yield positive changes, so I could still use kibble or whatever I was feeding my dog already. I had actually come in to to buy freeze dried raw food and he showed me that it was actually MORE expensive than buying raw. I took a leap of faith and in about a week, I became a believer. It's now been over 2 months since our dog has gone to the vet and we see no signs whatsoever of butt scooting. I've also purchased low calorie training treats that make my dog's eyes light up, fish and venison jerky that makes him forget about all the dogs and trucks around him, and other freeze dried foods for upcoming camping trips where refrigeration is limited. If you want the selection of Petco but want the customer service of a small business, come to Big Al's. I went back 2 weeks later and the same employee remembered me and asked how my dog was liking the new raw food, which definitely makes you feel so special. You won't regret it. Every time I need to come to the area, I make it a point to visit and stock up on everything I need for the next month or so. They all care about your pets like you do, maybe even more because they take the time to educate you on WHY certain things are better for your furry/feathered loved one. read more

I'm from Culver City so I usually never have trouble finding my picky pup's fave food because there are so many local specialty stores, but I've lately been spending a lot of time in the valley so I was a little worried when I realized I was running low on his food. However, thanks to Zignature's online "find a store near me" feature, I was able to find Big Al's Feed & Pet store, so I called them to make sure they my dog's fave lamb flavor. Just my luck they had a few bags left and the lady on the phone so graciously offered to put them on hold for me! Within the next hour I was on my way, in and out of the store within 5 mins. It's part of a plaza so there were plenty of parking. The employees were very friendly and helpful, and the prices are reasonable. They also have a point system for rewards members- I signed up today. It's 1 point for every dollar spent, and on the 100th point, you get $5 off your purchase. Super cool! Don't be me. Just, don't. Don't drive by this place for years without ever stopping because you assume they are overpriced, or understocked, or too small to have much going on. I walked in today and realized I was being ripped off by Petco for the past two years. I'm paying $90 to $100 a bag for Purina Pro Plan for my boy when I could have been getting the same quality food at Big Al's for $44. And that was just one high quality food option at Al's. It's the bands of food that you don't think you can afford, but at affordable prices with in-store sales, and a rewards program. Also, amazing customer service. Let me start by saying that I love supporting my local shops and small businesses. However, many times the prices in local stores are higher compared to some of the big online sites. This is NOT the case with Big Al's. Not only are their in-store prices competitive to or LESS than online retailers, but the level of customer service from Brandon and his crew is top notch. It is so refreshing to be unable to ask questions to someone working in a pet store and get unbiased and informed answers. This is such an underrated experience nowadays! One Sunday evening I realized that my puppy had run out of his new food and panicked because I knew I wouldn't be able to make it to Big Al's before they closed in 10 minutes. I took a chance and called the store to confirm the closing time, and Brandon answered. He so graciously agreed to stay open past their closing time to allow me to come in and buy my pups food! Another time, I mentioned a food I'd recently switched my pup to that we were using and really loved. Brandon was familiar with the product and agreed that it was a great one, but he didn't carry this brand of dog kibble in store. Within a month, they ordered the product - Farmina, and now carry it in their store! I'm so blown away by the customer service that I've received, the quality of products offered, and the outstanding prices. I will be a forever customer of BIG Al's! read more

I have been coming to Big Al's for over 25 years. This is my local pet food store and has they have always offered high quality pet foods, treats and everything you need if you own a pet. Not to mention the convenience of also having Veterinary services onsite on specific days/weekends. This was always an added plus. The staff here are super friendly and always helpful. I have a frenchie and was struggling to buy the right pet food (have tried everything from wet to dry) since my little buddy has a sensitive stomach and allergies. I had the pleasure of speaking with Brandon who was very knowledgeable. I told him the issues I was having and he recommended Lucy's pet food formula (Duck, pumpkin and quinoa) and this has literally changed my dogs life.
