Perhaps the most iconic landmark in London. This is a great view whether on boat or land. It is very impressive to be right there. You can make half a day touring the Houses of Parliament and seeing Big Ben up close. A must-do. read more

This is one of those things that you just have to see, right? Big Ben and the Parliament building. But, uhm... what more can I say? I like architecture, and history, and I know Big Ben is an iconic piece of England, so I took the obligatory tourist shot of it, amongst a sea of other people doing the same thing, and gazed for a while at the parliament building, then walked down the street to continue my adventures. It's a beautiful Gothic-style tower, but I really didn't care one way or the other about seeing it, but my companion persisted because because it's an icon, it's a symbol, etc. etc. I don't have any regrets seeing it, so there's that. read more

Big Ben was built on September 28, 1843, in Westminster, London, England. It was done being modified around May 31, 1859. Augustus Pugin and Charles Barry were the architects for the Big Ben Tower. Get on the circle line (the yellow one) and get off at Westminster. It's so beautiful and majestic--a MUST SEE up close (you can see it from many other places, but you really need to actually go to it). I was blown away. I love London, but the reason I say it was kind of sad was because when we went the clock was covered in scaffolding which really took away the cool factor of the clock tower. Driven past this spot thousands of times. I've been lucky enough to have had access to the Houses of Parliament on many occasions even to go up into the bell tower itself. The reason they call it Big Ben is that is the name of the bell. The clock is governed on weights by old pennies. Public are not allowed into the main building but can attend public gallery (if its still open) not like the 24 hour bar inside the building. hic hic. read more

One of my favourite London memories occurred here. I was taking pictures and a young girl came up to me, and seriously asked me what the time was. I glanced at my watch and told her. I looked up behind her and there was Big Ben, showing the time on his clock face. I told my friend what had happened and cracked up laughing. Big Ben - one of the infamous iconic landmarks of England. It is big, it is a clock tower, and attached to the Palace of Westminster. I love the reflection it casts over the water in the evening and night. Its amazing to see and makes your heart skip a beat. Absolutely beautiful! You can't really go up, not sure how you can (apparently there's some special process and you have to be a UK citizen?). It's attached directly to the Houses of Parliament. Dreamy architecture. Westminster Abbey is a 5min walk away, and if you circle around you can walk around the Thames, a small bridge, and then the Thames again. London Eye is another 5-min in the opposite direction across the bridge. Smaller attractions near London Eye is the London Aquarium and London Dungeon. read more

There is no bad view of this clock tower from either side of the river. It takes your breath away, especially just at dawn with the sunset in the background. The bridge is packed full with wall-to-wall people, so be prepared to step onto the traffic lane. Just note, those cars and buses do not slow down, they almost go faster when they see you. If you have a tripod, try to take a time line -- it is well worth the time! read more

Big Ben is actually the bell inside rather than the entire clock tower building, however most foreign tourists just refer to the entire clock tower by the name Big Ben. The name is actually the Elizabeth Tower. This is another one of those must see and photograph places in London. You can get great pictures from just about any angle but my favorite are on the river side with parliament included and just behind Westminster Abbey with the Abbey, the London eye and the clock tower all in the shot.
