When a foreigner thinks of England, they think of Big Ben. Although Big Ben is actually the bell, not the structure, I could barely imagine what such a grand bell looks like. Instead, we acknowledge the Tower Clock as Big Ben and carry on merrily with this humble institution of London. I don't think I can find words to describe the Big Ben. My breath was taken away as we excited the tube. I've seen pictures of the Big Ben (and in movies), but to see it in real life is something else. I spent about 30 minutes (or more) just walking around, taking photos from different angles on the street! It can get a little windy since it's right next to the Thames River. It's also right next to parliament, across the street from Westminister Abbey and the London Eye. This little corner is definitely a hot spot for tourists! read more

Ah, the clock for which I was named after. Not really, IT was named after ME. Not really, but you could imagine... We really just walked by Big Ben as we were heading somewhere else across the bridge. It actually is quite large, but I can see why they went alliterative with the 'Big' instead of calling it 'Quite Large' Ben. That's why they get paid the big bucks, those guys that name things. It's hard to believe there aren't three times this many reviews. This sight is beautiful. It's difficult to find a time where it isn't a cruise ship's worth of people in front. Especially considering there is restricted access due to Parliament. I'd recommend moving around the whole structure's perimeter to catch it from different angles (you'll end up seeing half the neighborhood this way). read more

Meh. The area is incredibly touristy and there are a lot of very nice thing to see in the area. I won't give it a high or low rating simply because it can be a different experience for everybody. I'll keep this short. Its a great photography spot both day and night, and there is a Tube stop very close by so accessibility is top notch. This is such an iconic landmark for so many Americans when they think of London (and by extension, England). It's very nice during the day but I think nighttime is when it's more impressive. The lights just make it shine brighter against the night sky. One can almost imagine that Peter Pan can swoop you up and take you to Neverland. Great to see in person! Definitely a "must see" for any first timers

A lesser-known fact is that Big Ben is actually a nickname of the tower, Big Ben itself is the Bell inside, and the tower is actually called Elizabeth Tower. Potentially one of the most iconic buildings of London 'Big Ben' sits alongside the houses of parliament, Westminster Bridge (from which William Wordsworth wrote one of my favorite poems about London - and which was featured in 28 Days later), is close to the London eye and Southbank. Definitely worth a visit and a picture when you're visiting the capital. Although unless you are visiting at night or an off-peak time, expect a bustling crowd of tourists. I can't believe I made it to Big Ben. I had a seven hour layover in London Heathrow Airport and didn't think it would be possible to leave and come back in that short of a time. But, I must say, if you get the opportunity to go see it, don't hesitate. Just go! It's gorgeous and you will regret not going. If you're at Heathrow Airport, this is the route we took: From the airport, go to the lowest floor possible and you should find a ticket dispenser. Ask for help if you aren't familiar with which pass you need to get. Tell them you need to get to Westminster. From the airport, take Heathrow Express to Paddington. From Paddington, find the Circle Line (yellow line). It will stop at Westminster. On the way back, we found out there are several more ways to get there and back, but for the sake of our sanity, we took the same way back. read more

No matter how many stars I rate this attraction, you are going to see it anyway. That being said, it is exciting to see Big Ben in person, but there is really nothing to it. You can't climb it like the Eiffel Tower or go inside like the Statue of Liberty. Still it is located in a hot corner in London near Parliament, The Eye, The Thames, and Westminster Abbey, so it always there for you to look at and keep you centered. read more

If you go to London and don't see Big Ben, it's as if you never went to begin with! Not that it's the only thing to see, of course! But it is so easy to take the subway and make it there! I recommend getting there while you still have daylight, but close to dawn, so you can take pics of it with daylight and at night time. There is something AMAZING and INDESCRIBABLE about Big Ben! From far away, it appears to be a silly little clock tower, however, when you are up close and personal, it is breathtaking! A friend and myself repeated disrupted the streets of London by screaming "BIGGGGGGG BEEEENNNNNN!!!!" at the top of our lungs and took millions of pictures each day. While your at it, why not avert your eyes just slightly and enjoy the vast, striking Houses of Parliament, conveniently connected to Big Ben? And if you have the energy to turn around, you can see the London Eye! (I would never encourage anyone to actually take a ride in the Eye, though: big waste of time and money.) If you are feeling particularly adventurous, you can walk along the Houses of Parliament and arrive at Westminster Abbey, a beautiful cathedral, to be sure.
