For whatever reason, maybe we're drawn to people but we started talking sobriety cuz my situation is getting bad. He had some insight and just talked to me like a regular person, no judgement. Also, might be the best haircut I ever got. I got that ww1 peaky blinders cut and the fade was perfect. I work with twenty people in a restaurant on saturdays and like seven people complimented my cut. So is everyone else who has posted a review of this place a friend or family member of Randy's? This is hands down the filthiest business I have ever been to, of any kind. It would be filthy for an automotive shop, a nursery, or a failing mom-and-pop hardware store, but it's next-level filthy for any place that's doing work on the human body. When I got there, what first greeted me was the smell of old gym clothes. What greeted me second was a pile of mail stacked to the top of the first barber chair -- like, the kind of pile of mail that you get when you've been on vacation for two weeks and pick up the mail you had held at the Post Office while you were gone. What greeted me third was Randy himself, who was splayed out in one of the waiting chairs eating a Jimmy John's and told me he'd be a minute. I'd already tried two barbershops before I came in, so I stuck around. As Randy cut my hair, I had a chance to look around the shop, and I noticed an upside-down bicycle, an old pair of Puma-brand athletic sneakers strewn underneath a chair, a broken 1950s refrigerator, rusty sinks, and hair, hair, hair -- all over the floor. Lest you think this was just your typical as-yet-unswept-hair-on-a-barbershop-floor, let me clarify that there were many different types of hair all over the floor, and Randy was the only guy there -- clearly it'd been there for a while. I looked at where the legs of the not-working antique refrigerator met the aged linoleum floor, and noticed that there was also little bits hair permanently jammed between the tile and the refrigerator's feet. Mind you, this just speaks to the cleanliness of the business -- there's more. In addition to this, he does not have a working business phone. Yes, he has a phone NUMBER, but if you call it, you'll get a disconnection message. It was also a mediocre haircut -- clippers only -- and he broke my cardinal rule of old school barbershops by not using foam/straight razor to create a sharp neckline. I've decided that if anybody out in St. Louis can manage to run an old-school, no-appointments-necessary barbershop with multiple chairs, old-school barber skills and services, and a merely passing level of cleanliness, he will be a rich man, indeed. I feel like I'm being railroaded into going to the Hair Saloon! Randy seems like a nice enough guy to have a beer (or maybe a toke?) with, but I can't stress enough how much I recommend against visiting his barbershop. read more

I started coming here after reading the stellar reviews. Randy does give a nice haircut and is a nice guy. It seemed like every time I was there, though, he was complaining about late afternoon customers. I tried going on a Saturday morning and had to wait an hour. Randy said people line up before the door opens on Saturday, so if you don't show up well before opening, you're in for a long wait. One day after work I raced across town to get there a half hour before closing, and he had already locked the door. That was the last straw. Sorry, no haircut is worth this much hassle to me. Randy should figure out when he wants to let in the last customer of the day, and list that as his closing time. Edit 1/5/2016 (3 months later): I tried racing there again after work, got there about 4:40 -- 50 minutes before he supposedly closes. Again he had the door locked. Looked like 3 other people were inside. It's his prerogative to lock up at 4:15 or whenever, but then he should put that as his closing time. Claiming 5:30 as closing time is farcical. read more

This is the barber shop that I have been looking for. One morning when the wait was too long at my usual place, I went to another barber in town who shall remain nameless. I only had to wait 5 minutes and when I sat down he took a quick 360 degree look and said something like "Don't worry, I can fix it." Randy is a great guy who just makes you feel like you're his new best friend right when you sit in his chair. I came in not know what I wanted so I just told him to do what he wanted. The end result was great. It was exactly what the style currently is and it looked good. He's a really personable guy and knows how to hold a conversation while he's cutting your hair. I walked in on a Thursday later afternoon and didn't have any wait but within a minute of sitting down, three more guys showed up. So make sure you come either early or with enough time to expect a little wait. He cuts pretty fast though without sacrificing detail. He's owned this place for about 6 years--took it over from another guy who retired. He knows his clientele but he's very welcome to new customers! I will definitely going back. $15. In an attempt to be urban, I decided on sunny Saturday morning to walk up to the barber shop located a couple blocks from my house. Upon walking in, I felt like I had raveled back in time. The guys at the Big Bend Barber bring you back to a time when General Motors ruled the country and women didn't work. It feels like your walking into a different decade with the pastel green barber chairs (which are mighty comfortable if I do say so myself) and green sinks. Walk in on a Saturday morning and this place is sure to be packed. Cliff, the barber, has been around for years and is a master with the clippers, though he only works part time now. He always has a great story to tell. When all the barber asks is "Medium, or shorter" you know are you getting your haircut at a barber. None of this #1, #2 stuff - save that for Great Clips. The best part about the cut is they still shave your neck with the old warm shaving cream and straight razor, so you are sure to get a clean look when its all done. I sat in this shop waiting for a beard trim for a considerable amount of time, which I was completely aware was going to be the case. First of all, there were no masks being worn by ANYONE in the shop, including the owner. I was the only person wearing one. As he was finishing up his last customer, he sneezed twice, back to back, into a towel, put the towel down and went back to cutting this guys hair. No hand washing. Nothing. I got up to leave as the other customer was getting up as well. He asked if I was leaving, and I explained why I was leaving. Not to mention, as I was leaving he had a letter from the moron in the White House at his establishment. As a gay man, who cares about his health, I couldn't go through with it. He came outside after I left reminding me that the trim was free, but I told him that I didn't want to get my beard trimmed by him. I was civil, while he seemed to be giving me some kind of attitude as to get a rise out of me, but that didn't happen. I left in a civil manner without raising my voice. He shouldn't be open if he is going to follow city ordinances. read more
