Very easy to set up schedule. Pool is heated and the pool area is like a sauna so no worries about kids being cold. Parents can sit inside the pool area (hot) or outside with AC. You can see inside the pool through the glass windows. They have individual stalls to change the kids clothes. Overall the facility is clean. Plenty of parking outside. The prices are about the same as everywhere in san diego, give or take $10-15 more or less. If you subscribe to their yearly plan it is cheaper of course compared to monthly. The only downside for us is that theyre not that aggressive or firm in teaching the kids. My kid can swim by kicking his legs without using the pool noodle but they still have him hanging on to it. I am afraid he might regress. Lets see how long they will make him use it. Been there 2 times so far. Another downside is some kids are huge, taking up so much space in a small lane. My kid was with 2 really big kids and barely have any space to even stand with total of 4 kids in 1 lane. They can definitely move them around or swap with another coach. My kid learned to swim from being scared of water to being able to jump into the pool and kick water to the ledge for safety in 11 days with a private coach. So hopefully he doesnt regress with these slow lessons. read more

Every class has a clipboard, progress notes, and a clear sense of where your kid is headed next. They move through real developmental tranches, not vibes. The pool itself is huge, warm, and the entire room is heated to tropical levels so kids never shiver through a lesson. It's so warm that I personally refuse to sit poolside, but the kids are thrilled. The locker room situation is elite. Two dozen stalls at minimum, which means no waiting, no crowding, no post lesson meltdown because someone else is taking forever. Instructors aren't just thrown in the water and forgotten. They're watched, coached, and evaluated by a team that clearly cares about consistency. A lot of the negative reviews here come from one time visits where the kid was miserable. And honestly, that's not a Big Blue problem. Learning to swim is scary. You're in the water with a stranger doing something brand new. All three of my kids struggled at the beginning everywhere we went. YMCA, Callan, you name it. Big Blue has been the smoothest of the bunch. Bigger facility, easier parking, better locker room flow, calmer energy. Are all instructors perfect? No. That's true anywhere. But across the whole journey this has been the least stressful experience I've had as a parent in the swim school world. You can't call the front desk directly because everything routes through the central call center, but the app is simple and the staff on site are always friendly and accommodating. If something goes sideways, just show up and talk to them. They fix things without attitude. My kids love swim day. I'm grateful for the warm welcome, the structure, and the easygoing vibe. We love Big Blue! The class sizes are small and since I have 3 kids, sometimes they are the class! There can be a different teacher class to class but the program seems to be seamless. My kids have progressed well even just going once a week. They have class times and availability all throughout the week and weekend to fit every schedule. We do late at 7:15 and then the kids just shower and get pajamas on which is perfect since they're nice and tired for bed! read more

We have been coming to Big Blue Swim since August of 2025. And have not had a bad experience until today. Mind you, My son is autistic and we got very lucky to have had the same instructor for almost 6 months. He obviously started off his swim lessons a little nervous and apprehensive but quickly warmed up. Sadly our coach doesn't work here anymore. For the past 3 weeks my son has had a new instructor. Last week we had the pleasure of experiencing coach Denise. She was absolutely amazing, extremely patient. I must've thanked her so many times for being so great with my son. Well today she had not been there and that's okay but coach Frankie stepped in to teach the class and right off the bat was annoyed, not compassionate of the fact that my son isn't used to her and she was so aggressive in her approach to try to get my son to swim. He was screaming, crying and the session basically ended in her discriminating against my son and his special needs. Saying "I'm not going to do this with him, or put up with the screaming, he's obviously upset" I immediately pulled my baby out of the pool and told her how inpatient she was and that it wasn't a good fit for us either. Instead of trying to get my son to warm up to her and be playful and allow him to trust her first since it was the first time he was ever in her class she just threw her hands up and said get him out of my class basically. We both left in tears and I spoke to Ivan the general manager who tried to make things right but I just can't get over the fact that as mothers it is our job to advocate for our children especially the ones who can't speak up for them selves . She has no business being around people let alone children. I sat in the parking lot balling my eyes out for 30 minutes after over how mistreated we were by this woman. These are some of the things coach Frankie said to my son today in swim class. "You're going to leave that wall one way or another" "You grabbing onto me isn't helping yourself" "I appreciate you trying to float on your back but that's not what we're doing right now" I really hope no one else has to go through what my son and I went through today by coach Frankie! read more

We have an 8 month old & put her in swim classes for the first time! Here are our thoughts: PROS -engaged, friendly instructors -heated, INDOOR pools which is very convenient -new, clean facility with several areas for parents to watch their kids, restrooms, & changing rooms -showers to rinse off next to pool -app is so easy to use & it's easy to skip a class & schedule a makeup CONS - in the 0-3 yrs class, every class is the exact same, where you & your child go to different "stations" to practice swim exercises. It got pretty repetitive & boring, esp if you attend weekly -if your baby can't do "balloon face" on command, you're limited to like 1-2 exercises & so you don't submerge the baby underwater yet Overall, I'd recommend it but just tailor your expectations. It's a structured & safe learning environment but can get repetitive. You can definitely recreate the 0-3 class at any pool w/ ease. They worked with us with some extra support and time to get her comfortable and improving more quickly. I was initially a little off-put that they use floatation devices, but they were SO patient getting my 3 year old into the water, and making arrangements to have him in solo at times, that we stayed on for summer. Awful experience. My daughter is traumatized from the lack of planning and the inexperienced swim 'instructors'. My daughter does not have really any experience in a pool and they knew this, yet they put her in a lesson alongside an older boy who clearly had much more experience and the activities were shared. The instructor kept asking my 3 year old to do stretches and other things that caused her to keep falling into the water upside-down, head first. Understandably this freaked my daughter the hell out. And they just kept doing the same things again and again, further upsetting my child until we had to just take her out early and go home with a screaming toddler. I was really surprised when I looked this place up on yelp to recommend it for a friend and saw the negative reviews. The time that I went, the experience was excellent. I think they must've taken the reviews very seriously because I did not see any safety issues while I was there. Quite the opposite this is one of the first schools I have seen that actually uses flotation devices on the children during swim lessons which made my daughter feel much more comfortable. My son who is a little bit older and knows how to swim and did not need a floatation device also did a trial lesson and enjoyed the instruction that he received from his lesson. Both my kids asked to return which almost never happens with activities so for us it was a positive experience. read more

As a mom of a kindergartener who is just now learning to swim with basically zero experience, I am beyond impressed with the instructors & this establishment! They truly have a great system down - my child has progressed in a very short time frame (1-2 months & now moving onto the next level). We were referred by multiple friends & overall this place is fantastic. It's clean, efficient, affordable & convenient. Possibly reducing the amount of kids per lesson would be a suggestion (maybe 2 or 3, instead of 4), although I completely understand that these are not private lessons & sometimes they aren't fully booked anyways. I personally don't mind having different instructors, but I've also only had positive & pleasant interactions with all of them I've encountered. I have to agree with the other reviewers, Big Blue swim school did not help my child learn anything. They use floaties for every lesson- KIDS CANT LEARN TO SWIM IN FLOATIES! In 6 weeks they never taught my child how to even hold on to the edge and climb out of the pool. She did not learn any safe skills except floating on her back. The instructors, while all very friendly, don't seem to be fully trained. I have since returned to Noonan Family Swim school where my other child learned to swim several years ago and where I should have just returned in the first place. Do your research. read more

The staff is very nice and the rescheduling of lessons is very easy which is a plus. The facility is clean and new. My son (4 years old) had done private swim lessons in the past and was a good swimmer- he could swim across the short length of the pool without assistance when we first tried Big Blue. The introductory lesson was a waste of time because they put him in the easiest level for 3-5 year olds, which I understand, they have never seen him swim before. The other kids wouldn't put their face in the water. My son was bored out of his mind. They did move him into the 3rd tier of this age group about 3/4 of the way through the lesson and he enjoyed it more but they required him to use a floatie waist belt which he doesn't need. They gave us a 2nd free introductory lesson since the first was a bit of a waste, so that was appreciated, but when they scheduled us for the 2nd lesson, they put him in the 2nd tier instead of the 3rd. I didn't realize this until after that 2nd lesson and my son didn't want to go back because he said it was boring. They finally moved him into the 3rd tier of the lessons which was better but he was still bored and he hated wearing the floatie waist belt. The instructor would occasionally let him not wear the belt but most of the time he had it on. They said that he couldn't move into the next set of lessons which are for 6+ until he was at least 5. So we didn't keep going because he was going to be bored for a few months until he moved up just based on his age. For a beginner swimmer, it's probably not bad, but for my kid who was a good swimmer already, it wasn't helpful. I didn't like that they require a specific age to advance in the lessons. read more

I rarely leave reviews for anything but we had tried the free trial to see whether my son will like it or not and the instructor was so young and just seemed over the whole situation , it didn't even seem like she liked kids in general, she just seemed zoned out . They didn't teach him anything or show him anything instead they just expected him to stand on the side and wait his turn to swim 2 inches forward and back. Meanwhile his goggles were falling off and he was struggling to see and they were just standing there, waiting for his turn to be over . I told her this is his first time and doesn't really know how to swim , which she replied " oh wow" I have nothing against the age of the instructor if she was actually willing to be helpful and do something to give me a positive outlook on the experience . During the whole time the other instructor who seemed to be in the water for prop was just asking the kids what's their favorite movie, what's their favorite dessert... while they are just trying to learn how to swim. You guys, I cried at least two times! I swear on my son. My son is autistic and we had such a bad experience. They have so many young instructors. My son's first random instructor looked so irritated after 10 min of working with my son. They are not trained to work with special needs children and it shows. One mom complained about my son "splashing too hard" it made me so sad because only if she knew my son is autistic and he was really trying his best. They cancelled my sons classes at least 2 times with in the first month. Not to mention that they changed instructors twice without notifying us ahead of time. My son needs stability and he does best working with male instructors. Shoutout to David. C he was the only person who showed patience to my son. He was very understanding of his diagnosis. David if you're reading this thank you for your patience. My husband and I truly appreciate you! Last but not least. They have like 4 kids in one lane trying to teach them all at the same time. Which I understand we are not paying for private classes however, it's not practical to have kids of different ages all in one lane. I could understand having 2 kids per lane but 4 it's crazy. We have found a new swimming school that specializes with children with disabilities and I do have to say you can definitely tell the difference. They get 2 stars because they are very very very nice. And let me cancel with a full refund. And the facility is aesthetically pleasing. But that's where the good things end. I'm not trying to be mean, I'm just all about water safety for your child and them learning a LIVE SAVING skill. This place uses floatation devices! And they tell you that only if your kid is in danger do they have to wear it. But then when you get there, your kids not allowed to take it off, unless they pass a test. Their test is basically... they can swim. If you do any research, learning to swim with a flotation device is actually harmful and creates bad habits while giving your child a false sense of safety and security. The instructors have to be in their 20s, nobody even asked what my child's swim level or experience was really when we got there and I basically felt like my kid went there to play in the water with a babysitter not learn from a swim instructor. They take children as low as 3months old. You don't even need to pay somebody for swim lessons for a 3month old. All you need to do from 3 to 18 months is keep taking them in the water yourself and getting their face acclimated to the water/blowing bubbles. You don't need to pay for that. Do yourself a favor... Save some money and then visit Alli Joe's swim school, her prices may be more, but there is a reason why. read more
