The billboards and ads promote home of the bison burger. I ordered mine low carb with no bun and salad. The burger was 1/3 pound. Price $13 something. I make better bison burgers on my blackstone. The salad had pretty low standards and I'd be embarrassed to serve yellow iceberg lettuce. The rest of the family liked beef commercial and hot turkey open faced sandwich with mashed potatoes. Just today I received note from an employee from this establishment. They put it under yelps compliments. In it they said that they were the person I was referring to in my review, they then called me an A hole, but with the full spelling. Funny; I never raised my voice or made a scene. I even gave the server a decent tip! Which was somewhere between 22 and 25%. The cook had lied about the patty. Lied about the shrinkage. Buffalo is lean meat and doesn't shrink. And I got ripped off!!! 1/3 pounder fries and a coke all for the very low price of I don't remember 25 or 27 bucks at a pisshole marginal truck stop in a podunk town. I hope the owner sees this. Classic truck stop and travel plaza cafe with very good food is what I like about this place. The portions are larger that you would expect if you're not used to truck stop sizes. Their breakfasts, that they make all day, looked really incredible. I heard the waitress ask someone if they wanted both maple and blueberry syrup with French toast. I had the hot roast beef with mashed potatoes and stuffing. The roast beef was particularly good. The prices are good and I took half my meal home for another round making it even a better buy. read more

My husband and I had lunch here on New Years Day. It was our 2nd time eating here in the past few weeks. Our first time was great! We ordered a burger and an omelette...good and very generous portion. Our last experience was not as good as our first time. I had a taco salad. The presentation was nice but all the "good" lettuce was layered on top and the core and inner leaves of the iceberg head was underneath as bowl filler. The taco shell was crispy and not greasy. I had the worst experience last Friday (2/16). Big Chief Travel Plaza A disgruntled employee was screeching across the counter at another employee, repeating the most disturbing phrase. "Sucking d*ck has got you real f*^%#'n far in life, huh" Over and over and over - that same horrendous phrase. Nobody did a thing about it and everyone seemed upset. Just not an appropriate thing to allow in a dining atmosphere. He eventually did storm off like a child. The food was okay but the experience left something to be desired. My server Mary was delightful but everything else was out of control. I wouldn't recommend Big Chief to anyone. read more

I think my previous experience had to do with COVID and lack of customers/staff. I just had an awesome meal there. I had French Toast with eggs and bacon (added an extra egg). My 3 year old dining partner had the kids cake and also egg and toast (She wanted a pancake, I wanted her to have some protein). The prices were very reasonable, so ordering her 2 breakfasts was still less than one kids breakfast at the other cafes in the area. The cafe was super busy, but they had a lot of waitstaff to cover the need. I think because they were so busy, they must go through a lot of food, and everything tasted really fresh. FYI for truckers or overnight visitors, sign on the door as of 07/10/2022 says they are closed nightly from 10pm-6am due to staffing shortages, but will reopen those hours as soon as they can get staff. read more

A truck stop café is what it is nothing special from the outside or the inside. I stopped for some breakfast before heading to the cabin and some fishing. I had the waitress with the dyed blonde hair and she was very nice and provided excellent service. The breakfast was very good, 2 eggs over easy, bacon and 2 pancakes all prepared perfectly. The prices were good and the service was very good. They are supposed to be known for their bison burgers but I didn't get back to Fergus Falls to sample the burger. I will certainly be back to the Big Chief later this summer to try the Bison Burger. read more

I always stop here for breakfast on my way to the cities, and it never disappoints. The food is very high quality and seems to be made there, not pre packaged or instant. My personal favorites are the French toast and the banana cream pie. Their omelets are also pretty good but nothing to special. read more

Visited on 10/21/21. Cafe was a complete madhouse because of the lunchtime crowd. I had the hamburger steak, fries, vegetable of the day (peas, carrots, corn, and green beans). The "steak," and fires were good, however the vegetables were cooked to death, and then another 10 minutes beyond that. Sat outside which was lovely since being inside during covid isn't ideal. The service was quick and SO unbelievably welcoming. We got refills of soda without even having to ask. Our side salads came out before dinner without even having to ask (our waitress sensed we were hungry, she's amazing). The burgers are UNREAL good (bison burgers). Really great portion sizes. One friend got the wrap and it looked SOOOOO yummy, next time I'll try it (although the burgers are so moist, thick, and delicious it's hard to want to eat anything else). The ranch was PERFECT. I could drink a gallon of it. The fries were crispy and you get a huuuuuge portion of them. Thinking about them is making me hungry. 10/10 would recommend this place. read more

OK my hopes were really high when I saw the other reviews of this restaurant. I order the Buffalo Burger dinner. I asked to have a cooked medium rare. It was brought to me cooked well done and there's no way it was a 3rd a pound of Buffalo. The people as say they have good portions I don't know what they consider a good portion but as far as I'm concerned they're on the small side. This is a stereotypical TV style truck stop with one sassy waitress serving a bunch a truckers and some random tourists from San Francisco passing by. It was 6:30am and I had the gigantic veggie omelet with hashbrowns. Hubby ordered the bison chili and said it was de-lish (too much for me that early). Our food was quickly made. We stopped here, for what we thought was just going to be a fuel stop, but was pleasantly surprised to see a clean diner awaiting us that just screamed "sit down and eat with us!" which we did! I'm a huge fan of bison, and usually buy it when I'm at the grocery store, but haven't ever seen a restaurant that advertises that they have famous bison burgers. We both ordered a burger each, mine bunless, his not, and recieved them in a very prompt manner. The meat was cooked well on mine, bit their concept of medium was more rareish than mediumish. It was totally edible, though! You could even see the little grill marks on the meat, which I'm not sure if they're hand patted in house or not, but it was still good. They give you a good amount of veggies on your burger. Beware of the mustard though, it is a bit runnier than I'm used to for typical old yellow mustard. The side salads were okay, nothing that I would order again. It kind of looked like that stuff that you get directly out of the bag - you know, the lettuce looks a little past prime and the cabbage shreds are a radioactive purple color. The side salad comes with no tomato, no cucumber, no onion, no cheese, and you actually get asked if you want croutons. Overall decent. The blue cheese dressing, amazing. The service was great, all the girls that waited on us were super friendly and professional. It made me feel right at home! I'd give the big chief five stars if it weren't for the salad. I'd stop in again next time and try some of that amazing looking pie! read more

One of the BEST bison burgers if not the best I have ever had. Simple. Flame grilled. Well seasoned. Perfectly cooked. OMG this is the burger of my dreams. Why is this little truck stop so far from my home? I wanted to crawl inside of it. Next time I shall try the steak. If the burger was this good, I can only imagine how good the bison steaks are. And I think I shall take some chili home for dinner because I don't think I can eat a steak and chili in one setting. Seriously folks this is a simple tasty roadside diner. This was the best decision I've ever made when it comes to stopping for food! Little background, my husband is a truck driver so we like to stop in each state and find a place that for one, obviously we've never been to, and two, a place that has good reviews or good looking pics of the food. I went with the chicken fried steak and eggs (breakfast). My chicken fried steak was smothered in the country gravy which was phenomenal and I am so picky when it comes to chicken fried steak because the best one I've ever had has ruined all chicken fried steaks for me. Everytime I try it somewhere else I can't eat it. Nothing has ever lived up to my all time fave but this place beat my all time fave out of the water!!!! Hands down best I've ever tried and hubby tried it as well and agreed! My plate included hash browns, which let me tell you, was the most hash browns I've ever had on any plate lol and two eggs over medium (done perfectly btw!) and a side of toast, I went with the wheat. Omg....I was so full after about 6 bites I kid you not. The plate portions are just humongous! Also this place had some really good coffee and you know Californians have a thing for Java! Their coffee made us so pleased! My husband, while I was in the restroom, ordered us a dessert to go. He got the "BAR" and this one is a mocha bar. We read up on the best things to eat while in Minnesota and this was on the list so he had to get one. Don't know how that tastes yet we are so full from our meals so I'll update this later... The style and vibe of the place was great too, seems like a place where all the locals would go and they'd have a ton of regulars. There was a giant stuffed bison head on the dining room walls watching over all the diners. A bit creepy. I was glad I wasn't eating bison because I think that may have dissuaded me from eating. Omg wtf hope that not new normal this place has been a favorite of mine for 10+ years . After the exspirence I just had I just hope i can make it home b4 diarrhea kicks in. Had to ask for a ice water 3x b4 I got 1 even though i never got a spoon to put ice in coffee, even after asking for silverware. Wow made it home but not inside. Embarrassed cause neighbors where outside and I peed on shorts i am wearing then I was able to bring my wife her to go order that arrived 10 min b4 my omelet and greese soaked hash blacks not brown so much oil they black in middle . Just my luck wife was in shower so I ran back into woods and this is true I got a bloody nose from violent b m while being nailed by 100 skeeters even took one to my tool pouch another 1st for me. And never got asked how meal was + table was dirty. Oh it's all good they gave me my coffee for free .
