The service has always been good, and I like the photos they take of the inside of the eye to look for changes year-over-year. But this is only the tip of the iceberg. On March 8th I took a blow to the head. Seemingly nothing much. It hurt. It was annoying. I got on with my day. But, the next evening I noticed a flash of light kept popping up in the corner of my eye. A quick Goog told me it was likely an issue with my retina (none of the usual "it could be a cold, or cancer--just the one thing). I made an appointment online and Dr. Patel took a photo inside my eye. There was nothing to be seen. However, 2 weeks later as I sat at my desk minding my business, I saw a black wavy line in the corner of my eye. Something that moved with the liquid in my eye. Moments later, that black line was many fine black lines spider-webbing across my field of vision. In another minute, it was gone. I emailed Red Eye to see if I should panic now or sleep on it and then panic, not really expecting a reply since it was close to 5, and within a few minutes Dr. Patel called. She had me come in at 10am the next day, HER DAY OFF, 4 HOURS BEFORE HER FLIGHT. I was worried I was interfering with her vacation, especially if it was nothing, but she insisted. And it was not nothing. My retina had torn. Nothing could have been done to prevent it, but now that it happened, she acted quickly. She called and got me an appointment at Chicago Retina the same day. When I got there, the ophthalmologist said the tear could have become a far more serious detachment in a matter of days or even hours. I was able to get laser surgery that day to prevent further tearing. If Dr. Patel hadn't contacted me immediately, insisted I come in, sacrificed her time off...lots of "ifs" could have resulted in a delay in treatment that could have led to much more serious damage. I'm so grateful to her!

I emailed about a week ahead of the appointment and received a response the same day adjusting my schedule. The day before our appointments, I received a text message confirming 2 of 3 of my appointments, but for the wrong times. I called and was told that I still had 4 appointments. I had to resend the email removing the 4th appointment to avoid a cancellation fee. Then I was advised that my insurance wasn't accepted, the day before the appointment. It is very difficult to get my entire family in on the same day for our vision checks. To be told rather flippantly that "this is our process now" that they don't run the insurance until the day before is pretty surprising. I'll take my 4 appointments to Oak Park, where Dr. Gifford sees patients a couple of times a month. The smugness of the person on the phone was really special. When Dr. Gifford owned this location, I didn't have these issues. Very disappointed.

Since they originally issued my prescription, I figured they could provide it quickly. I asked if they could give me the standard DMV vision letter. They told me the doctor "wasn't in," but then said that if I did a vision test and my prescription stayed the same, they could give me the report. Based on that assurance, I agreed and paid $90 for a new exam. After the test, they confirmed my prescription hadn't changed -- but then refused to give me the DMV report anyway. At that point it felt like a complete scam. Their refusal meant I couldn't complete my same-day appointment and had to start the whole DMV process over on another day. Because they wouldn't provide the report, I ended up buying a new pair of glasses I didn't even need just so I could finish my DMV renewal during the limited time I was in town. The glasses weren't optional -- their refusal forced me into it. I'm extremely disappointed. The staff gave me information that turned out to be false, wasted my time, cost me money I didn't need to spend, and left me without the simple document I came in for. Completely unprofessional and absolutely not a place I'd ever trust again.

I had $230 in frames allowance from VSP. I paid $189 out of pocket. I believe they are making up charges to increase the amount a patient owes. I was not given an itemized receipt. It only showed what I paid, not the cost of the frames or the prescription. The lady at the front desk used a calculator to make up prices. I filed a BBB complaint and grievance with VSP. It is unacceptable these days not to provide patients an itemized billing statement. People need to know exactly what they are paying for all services received (eye exam, lenses, frames, customizations, etc).To be clear, I have no issue with Ricketts, only the billing policies and practices. Front desk staff and literally make up prices. I would have been satisfied if all the prices were written on a scratch paper. As a teacher, I must give my students a grade report that has all of their assignments with grades earned. I cannot give a student a document with just a grade. If they failed, the must see how points added up to the grade. I need the same. I want a statement with all costs on it. I will settle for nothing less. People need to know at the time of sale what they are paying for so they can make up their mind. These glasses almost $1,000. Ant-glare is $155. I would have said no thanks if I knew that was how much I would be paying. Now I have no insurance left to use because of their billing practices. I never agreed to UV protection. I just wanted lenses so I can fucking see. There is a no-surprise billing law in effect. And since there were charges for customizations I NEVER asked for, I made an appointment with Legal Aid Chicago to file a complaint at the state level. So now they canceled my order and I have no glasses. Whether their prices were fair or not, I did not agree to them. I only wanted a prescription without extras. They discriminated against me by canceling my order. I took off work and lost pay. Now I have no glasses. This is Amy's fault since I should have been told what I was paying before swiping my card. Asking me if I wanted the extras would have been respectful. Amy tacked on those extra customizations without telling me only for to find out in the emailed recent I received after leaving Eye Mechanix. And somehow, I'm the bad guy. I used my last sick day. I have no prescription to get glasses elsewhere and no glasses. Canceling my order was beyond petty. I just wanted simple glasses. But thanks for showing me who you are and you conduct business with your respect. I ask for transparency and you cancel my order. I wish I can drop students when they complain but that's not how things work. You take good criticism with the bad and work to do better. In response to Rickettes, I never asked for coatings. The copay was $15. That's reasonable. Be honest here. I'm talking about all the extras that I did not agree to. read more

I flew in from LA just to see this beautiful optometrist office, for a thorough exam from Dr. RANDY Ricketts. He is so friendly, thorough and knowledgeable. He made me feel so comfortable. He is charming, smart, informative and helpful. I ended up needing a new PX for my lenses. Along with advice and recommendations with thorough instruction for my future of diminishing eye site. Even better, John and Jamie and Randy then helped me pick out fashionable and affordable new frames. And were able to get my new glasses sent priority mail to be back in LA. I LOVE THESE NEW SPEX! They are progressive lenses that change in the light for anti glare and turn into sunglasses automatically. I LOVE THE way they look and have received many compliments since. I highly recommend this cool location in Lincoln Park. Service is there strong suit And I will definitely return to Dr. Ricketts for my future eye care. I walked in without the skills to properly identify which glasses would be best for my features. I knew I 'Liked' or had bias toward certain attributes, but by the time I left, I learned a lot from John. The office staff is kind and also fun. Jamie is a bubbly personable gal. She took great care of all my needs. Dr. Randy Ricketts and his staff helped me choose a frame that exceeded my expectations. When I got my glasses I was so excited to be able to see better than ever & look better. He also adjusted my contact lens prescription so that they are also better and more comfortable. I went from always wearing contacts, to being a fashionable eyeglasses-wearer. Totally a fresh look on me and I owe it all to their advice. After a three month nightmare with another company, I contacted the office to see if they could get me in ASAP, which they did. Dr. Randy took one look at my prescription and knew there was a problem. He put me through an eye exam and solved the problem very quickly. He had several recommendations on the types of lenses I could purchase.....which I really appreciated. I loved their choices of frames and loved better the option to get custom made clip ons for them. I picked them up today and couldn't be happier. The office is neat and clean and very well organized with GREAT music playing! The office staff could not have been more friendly or helpful (I had an insurance glitch they fixed for me). Had my first contact lens and regular eye checkup exam here at Eye Mechanix. From reception all the way through to receiving my glasses, everything was professional and courteous. Dr Randy explained each part of the check up so I could understand what he was looking for in my eyes. After the exam, I was fitted for glasses. John was very open to letting me try all different styles and was very patient while I decided which was the best fit for me. I was in Chicago on a business trip and somehow lost my glasses. I found this cool place called Eye Mechanix... they had some really cool frames that I had never seen before which I loved and just had to have. The staff was so nice and so helpful... they helped me pick out the frames that looked the best on me. The Dr. did an eye exam on me and was so nice and very professional... Located only a 7 minute walk from the Armitage Brown line, Eye Mechanix was easily accessible and easy to secure an appointment. From there, check in went smoothly and once I had finished all paperwork, Dr. Ricketts provided me the most comprehensive eye exam and explained what about my eye prescription has changed. Every part of my experience with Dr Randy and his team has been so easy. They have an online scheduling option and are great over email. Dr Randy's exam was thorough and made me feel like everything that needed to be looked at was checked out. They took the time to locate my insurance and help with trial lenses so I could find ones that really worked for me. I recently moved to Chicago and had been putting off finding a new optometrist. When my contacts supply dwindled to zero I was finally forced to make a decision. After reading multiple Yelp reviews I decided on Eye Mechanix and couldn't have made a better decision. I, like most, don't enjoy finding new doctors, but Dr. Ricketts' friendly staff and operation run seamlessly. I've been suffering for months after an exam with a different provider. I need a multi focal contact lense an nothing was working. After literally 45 seconds of explaining my poor visual quality when it comes to reading things up close to Dr. Randy, he handed me some trial contacts and BOOM! Dr. Ricketts and his team of techs are great! Came in for the eye appointment, which was very thorough. Dr. Ricketts explained some issues with my eyes that were never previously explained to me even with semi-annual appointments with other doctors in the past. After the exam, the techs helped me pick out a great pair of frames that fit my face and budget really well. My glasses came in within the promised timeframe and the prescription is perfect. He did a thorough exam, listened carefully and discovered my issue, recommended a new lens that fixed my issue, John helped with the frames and adjusted them a few days later. The whole clinic was incredibly helpful in finding a pair that suited me, and I was able to leave the clinic that same day with my new glasses. Glasses are pricy nowadays but to me it's worth it to try them on in person and know they'll look good and fit well. The staff are all really friendly and it was super easy to make an appointment through their website. The optometrist was professional and the space was clean. They have modern technology to take a scan of the back of your eye at an added cost (OCT scan). They produce lenses in house so depending on the frame/lens you choose, you might even be able to pick up new glasses same day! They also have a 1 year warranty on their glasses which is great. If you have old glasses/contacts you can donate them here! I ordered blue-reflecting glasses but then changed my mind about it. Since it took 2-3 days to make those lenses I was able to call them and they adjusted the order to make the lenses anti-reflective instead! I appreciate the responsive customer service. No more blue reflections coming from my eyes! Side note: I only recently learned the marketing around blue reflectors as "healthy for your eyes" when looking at screens was not really supported by research, and I don't like the reflection in the lenses. I'm not a researcher though so take that as you will. I definitely recommend Village Eyecare if you want nice designer frames or need your annual eye exam!

One of the glasses made my head hurt and she took them back to remake the prescription free of charge which was a complete shock for me from a one location small business and she was super friendly and helpful. All the staff in the store give you 100% attention while you are in there and it feels almost like a royal shopping experience because you get to try on everything you want to try. It was super fancy and it was my first time going there but the one of a kind personal attention is something that I haven't found at warby parker or Costco or perle vision or LensCrafters (who I have been going to for glasses since I was little). These frames are super deluxe and i know they will last me a long long time. They go with all the outfits I own and I'm super happy about them, compliments at least once a day at the minimum and I've been wearing them for three weeks. Good selection, lots of variety, something for everyone. You get the quality you pay for hands down. I would say I'd go again but with these glasses I don't know that I'll ever need new glasses ever !! I love them so much they feel like an extension of myself. They're gorgeous.
