The corporate giants are slowly putting the squeeze on the locally owned and operated Muenzers on 5th street. This breaks my heart, Muenzers has been here since 1910 and is owned by a truly nice family. There prices may not compare with Big 5 but there service does by leaps and bounds. Go to Muenzers. Don't go to Big 5. read more

Went to buy shoes...had a sales ad up...on display then when we picked the shoes in the ad...the man who checked us out rang them at full price citing THIER posted ad as expired although they have the expired ad up as current sales in thier own display holder...what happened to honoring the posted price...is that a law or something...anyway we asked the glassed gentlemen if he would honor it and he said no, it was a four day sale that expired but they have to leave the ad up even though they are not honoring those prices...bad business guys...dirty. Go somewhere else if not for any other reason than dishonest business practices must be consequenced. read more

Big Five Hollister failed to honor their commitment to their community. The store recently circulated a coupon promising 10% off entire purchase, with 5% given back to Hollister Little League. In-store, the manager claimed that the coupon is only good for little league merchandise. Nowhere in the terms, conditions, restrictions, and exclusions is it specified that the discount only applies to little league merchandise. In fact, the little league board asked that the coupon be circulated outside of the league to raise additional funding for this important community program. Shame on you Big 5 for failing to honor your commitment to the community. If you're in the market for sporting goods, I recommend shopping a local specialty store or (if you must) a chain outside of Hollister. Don't support the store that won't support it's own community! read more

Horrible customer service once your inside the store. Upon walking in, 3 people greeted because they were all standing at the register chit chatting. I walked over to the ammo section and no one would come help me. I walked to the back of the store where a young boy was riding skateboards back and forth in the aisle. I wanted to look at shoes but again no one would help. I walked out of the store ( about 12 minutes) and all 3 girls said to have a ice day and continued there conversation. Good thing I'm not the manager there because they would have all been fired. read more

I love my little town of Hollister, and I love to support its local businesses. However, after today, I will go out of town for my sporting goods. It seems like every time I go into Big 5 in Hollister, I am greeted by scowls from the employees. I've been in dozens of times over the years, and have never been met with a smile...or even a 'hello'. Today, I was shopping for a pair of sunglasses, prepared to spend around $100. Even though there were two clerks less than 15 feet away from me, they never even acknowledged me. Then, someone walked up to the gun counter, and one of the clerks decided to help him. The other clerk just disappeared. After another 5 minutes, I left. No 'good bye' or 'have a nice day' from anyone as I exited. I worked in retail management for almost two decades, and I never saw such poor customer service. Back in the day, if I managed a store so poorly, I would have been fired!! I think the whole store crew is in dire need of soft skills training. I hope that the district manager reads these reviews and makes some changes. If not, I can see Big5 going the same way as Sports Authority...out of business! Driving elsewhere for my sporting goods needs! Good luck Hollister Big5! You're going to need it! read more

Well, I don't know if I'd agree about Muenzers or not. I've gone in there and there is NO ONE at the front counter and you kind of have to hunt around for someone to help. The owners always seem to be holed up by the key making area in some secret room. The store seems to be run by teens who don't know what's going on. Went in there a few weeks ago to get scout stuff, and they were out! Doesn't help much.. and I don't want to drive to Salinas. read more

I really enjoyed my last visit Friday. Looking forward to the out door concert. I needed lawn chairs. The cashier I think her name was Shawn. Very nice. She recommended a different chair as the event only took the proper size . I'm glad she talked to me where I was going or I would of been sol. Sitting on the hard ground. It's nice to have local people that know about the events in this town. I do not shop at Muenzers....but I have to agree with John about the service... Read on... Yesterday morning ( 1/20/09 ) I went in to the Big 5 sporting goods store on McCray Road , Hollister , CA , to purchase a pair of shoes for my wife. I have always wondered why this store did not have much customers and today I understood why. After deciding on which shoes to buy , we took the shoes to the counter. The shoes had a sticker of 29.99 dollars on it and they had advertised everywhere in the store that we could get 25% discount on top of the clearance price. When we went to the counter , the clerk first removed the sticker price which showed the discounted price. Then she rang the shoe for 64 dollars !!! When we pointed to the sticker and also mentioned the 25% discount , she looked at us as if WE were doing something wrong and it was not the mistake of the store and she gave us such a look as if we were felons. And when I asked if she could help out and take a look at the advertisement stuck everywhere in the store ..she just shrugged her shoulders as if she did not give a damn about it. I felt so disgusted with the clerk's behaviour that we walked out of the store without buying the shoes...I did not want to give my business to a store which treated me so badly... I wanted to do my duty as a community member of Hollister and give my business to the local stores. but if the local stores behave so badly with the local citizens..they will loose business. read more

Service was horrible. We bought the soccer package advertised at the store and we we got home we realized they charged us full price. I called them to see if they could fix if they said I had to come back in. So I go back in and after a long discussion where I had to do the clerks job she agrees we were charged incorrectly. Next she tells me that because my husband used his card and my number is different I can't return and I'll have to come back. Right lady I come back to your store for the third time with my non overly tired kids. I know have a credit at a store I intend to never go back. read more

I am giving the 5 stars to a young man who is employed there. His name is Michael this kid was so friendly and very helpful, that I thought I was in the wrong store. As for the store I give it a 2 maybe a 3 stars, if the lady up at the cash register wereJ helping (she is nice and has been there for awhile) I wished she worked out on the floor. Because you can't ever find someone to help you, or even acknowledge that you are there. Most of the time we walk out... And what's with the older Manager Lady... Wow! Talk about rude and short.. Hates being bothered and doesn't like having to help anyone, or stop what she's doing to answer a question. I'm sorry but I've lived in this town my whole life, and nothing ever seems to change in that store. We only put up with it because it's the only place in town, who sells tennis shoes (except Kmart) and now their gone too. So Michael keep up the good work, don't let that place drag you down. There is always a nice variety of products in the store. Now that Sports Authority is out of business Big 5 will pick up some business! It's always so empty in there, the staff is always friendly. Usually asking if I need help many times because there is nothing to do. Whenever they don't have an item in stock they check other stores nearby for them. So, we've been going to this store for years. Spent a ton of money. Hunting, fishing, and misc gear. We are big on supporting our local business'. I'm here now to write a review based on our visit this afternoon. I'm giving 4 stars because in the past we have always had a great experience. They have always had what we were looking for, and if not they would go out of their way to locate it and have it at the store within a week. Today, we needed new binoculars, and my husband wanted a spotting scope. A young guy approached us, freindly enough, but I could tell pretty quickly that he wasn't from here. No problem, until he totally insulted us. We wanted to try out the product, and could only do so by walking over to the window and looking out at the only trees within range. He let us, but literally acted like we were using this as an excuse to get close enough to the door so we could then run out and steal the items. I commented to my husband that I was quite sure he had to be a city boy, and wasn't used to the decency of small town country morals. Sure enough, when we walked back to the counter he began talking about the product and added that he's from San Francisco, and said something about the store he came from. We asked to see the higher quality spotter and he told us that he can't let us take it to the window and pretty much kept one hand on it while it was in my husbands hands. Wow. It was pretty insulting. I guess it's time we face the fact that our little rural community is no longer, nor ever will be as it once was. Time to start buying elsewhere. read more
