If you want authentic Polish food, Big Frank's is the place! We became aware of Big Frank's at pierogifest years ago. Every year we make sure to stop at the booth. That said, the Polish sausage here is the best I have ever had. So savory and a lot of garlic! I've been here a few times and always get the Krakow plate. Two Golabki (cabbage rolls) basically perfection. Potato pancake, some pierogi and kraut. Always so good! I mentioned the Polish. I get that with kraut, grilled onions and mustard. You're welcomed warmly by the staff. Stan, the owner is always warm and welcoming. Likes to talk and get to know you as well! Big Frank's is a cozy place. Plenty of room tho, if that makes sense. I went here after a day of work away from home, since they were open late, and offered some flavors that reminded me of my youth. A lot of German food is intertwined with Polish food. I ate the Warsaw plate (cabbage rolls, smoked kielbasa and kraut), served with a buttered slice of rye bread, and accompanied by a Polish Pilsner. An old friend of mine knew I was up in Hammond and recommended I pop in here to try the eats. He didn't steer me wrong. It's def a dive bar type spot, and man can they make some good pierogi. I got a sampler plate and everything was beyond delicious. I also had a cosmo, which I know, I should have gotten a polish beer but I like my girly drinks, what can I say. You'll feel like you are in your Polish grandparents basement, totally a sport bar! They make a cabbage soup that has potato and sausage in it. It was fantastic! They did need to bring it back into the kitchen to heat it up a little more but the taste was really great. The pierogi were nice, better than average, more meat than average but not my absolute favorite....and not sauteed in butter or bacon from what I can tell. (Order them though because it's subjective.) They are VERY skimpy on the sour cream! (And charge you 50 cents for the thimble you get!) They have a good beer selection, including multiple nonalcoholic beers. They do NOT have hot tea. The sausage is very good. The Polish burger and fries is very good, and the fries are much better than average, very good. The potato pancake was just okay, a little cold. The rye bread was great. Gołąbki huge! The place is oriented around the bar. They have booth along the bar. It's very much a bar atmosphere and the bartender comes out from behind the bar to serve you. In the winter, some of the booths can be a little cold, as it seems they have an insulation problem near the wall. The parking lot of very small. Been yearning for some mom style cooking..... found it. Big Franks is not fancy, but the food is done right. Wife and I both ordered a platter with varied polish style offerings. Center stage golabaki, kraut and pierogis. ALL served hot and flavorful. Monday afternoon so service was very attentive and inviting. Parking easy. Ambiance is that of a tavern with booths and tables. Can't pass up a few Zywiec on tap. No need to expound on the faire, it was in my review, PERFECT. We will now make this a regular stop. read more

Great Polish! I asked for my polish and frys well, and they were. My friends had walleye and perch and said it was excellent. Sides of Cole slaw and cuck salad were good, too. Our server, Jill was alone and a champ on a busy Friday. We had several drinks (3 wines, 2 beers @ $6 each) and the entire bill was $107.09. We'll be back! read more

The smoke sausage is amazing! Had a feast of a meal for less than $25 and took home enough food to have a whole second meal of leftovers. The staff were friendly, the patrons appeared to all know each other and this place seems to have been around forever. read more

Potato pancakes were limp and had a distinct sour flavor from what I assume was sour kraut mixed in. Stuffed cabbage was covered in straight tomato sauce. Pierogi out of a box. Stopped in for a late lunch today. Service as usual, top notch. Jill was behind the bar and for some reason late lunch was everyone's plan. She handled it like a trooper. The owner Stan always has great conversation and even remember my birthday a few days earlier. On to the food. Had me a taste for their pork steak sandwich. It's fairly new to their menu and I've passed on it a few times for my normal favorites. So glad I tried it. Soft bun with 2 nicely cooked pieces of pork steak. Comes with pickles, onions and BBQ if you want. By the way $6. It won't be my last one. Lao had the cabbage soup with meat. The meat was a nice compliment of sliced smoked sausage. Cabbage, potato's and a wonderful broth completed the soup with great seasoning. The wife and I both took advantage of $1 wing day. Wings were cooked perfect and glazed in BBQ for the wife and general Tao sauce for me. Meaty and not over cooked. Top it off with a nice polish draft beer and call it a night. read more

I discovered this place at Kielbasa Fest last year in East Chicago and accidentally drove past their brick and mortar location and decided to stop in. I waited for a very long time for the food to arrive after I placed my order. It should not have taken so long on a Sunday when it is expected that management would have been more prepared to serve their guests in a more expedient manner. That we can forgive. I ordered the Warsaw plate, two (2) very large cabbage rolls, fresh Polish sausage and kapusta. I never in my life referred to them as cabbage rolls as I am of Eastern European origins, we called them similar to golabky. I am very critical about the meat being sauteed prior to assembly, I don't like pink meat inside my stuffed cabbage, which is what one can expect at most places. Mixing raw meat and uncooked rice and filling a limp leaf of cabbage will give you pink, ham looking filling. At Big Frank's the cabbage rolls are merely mounds of meat and rice mixture with a single layer of cabbage leaf laid on top and tucked under the filling. This cooks the meat better, yes but they are not true, traditional cabbage rolls. The meat was NOT pink inside which is the correct outcome for these marvelous Eastern European treasures. They were good, I must say but I have had better. The tomato sauce was a bit too acidic. The fresh Polish sausage was good but again I have been served better at other restaurants. Fresh Polish is not as easy to find as the smoked version, so I am thankful they do carry it. This place lacks ambiance of any kind. If you claim to be a Polish restaurant, celebrate it. Don't hide your identity under a bushel basket. Go on West Belmont Avenue in Chicago and stop in any number of Polish stores and obtain some flags or tasteful ethnic symbols of Poland. You can forget the.... "You bet your dupa, I'm Polish" bumper stickers. Make a statement! Look inviting! It's too generic and 70's in a bad way. Be festive! Add color! Be inviting! A big round of applause for being clean and sanitary eatery. Everybody likes a spotless restaurant, even the bathrooms count. Big Frank's Sausage has room for a lot for growth and potential! Think Big and don't rest until you have earned a reputation as being the best Polish restaurant around. You can do it! It's not high quality Polish food. The cabbage rolls barely contains any meat mostly rice. I've been there twice and was disappointed by the food. The only thing on the menu that was good were the potato pancakes. They charge you for every little thing like the bread and butter. I've never been to a restaurant that does that. read more

There were some hits and some misses, but this is basically a nice place with good Polish food in an old neighborhood of northwest Indiana. The biggest problem places like these have is that they cannot possibly make all of these labor-intensive dishes fresh each day. As such, they are stuck making large amounts once a week or so and packaging them up and putting them in the ice box or freezer for use during the week. Reheating then can cause dry or hard spots on the food...a problem of freezing and microwaving. But even with that, we tasted a lot here. We had some noodles and cabbage (2 stars) which had a nice taste but they were dry on the edges as they'd been reheated a few times and the chunks of cabbage were too large; an assortment of pierogi (2 stars) which had nice fillings - I especially liked the meat filling - but again the little dough pockets were hard and too crisp on the edges from reheating; some Big Frank sausage (3 stars) very nice taste...a bit peppery and a bit overdone; a few potato pancakes (3 stars) very nice taste but pretty thin and limp; and a couple of stuffed cabbage (5 stars) which had a lot of tasty filling covered in a thin cabbage leaf...easily the best of the night. The restaurant also has a bar (8 stools...4 taps...lots of beer in bottles/cans) one can belly up to, or you can have your drinks served at the dozen or so tables - half normal height and half taller bar level tables. They seem to have a large carryout business as people were coming and going all evening. On the floor they only had one waitress moving everything through, but she did an admiral job trying to hold it all together...but don't come here looking for a quick meal, it will take a bit of time. All-in-all a nice local place for Polish food...I give it 3 stars overall...but just barely. read more

So a little background of myself before I write this review since it is relevant. Both of my parents are from Poland and I grew up as the son of blue collared Polish Catholics. My father is actually a refugee from Communist Poland. I ate Polish food growing up as a kid and know the culture very well. I grew up in the Chicago area mostly in the northwest suburbs. Polish immigrants are still arriving to Chicagoland and it has shifted more around O'hare airport which includes Schaumburg, Roselle, Itasca, etc. So we have LOTS of Polish restaurants, Polish grocery stores, and Polish bakeries along with other businesses. With that being said, I had to venture out to Big Marsh on the southeast side of Chicago near Indiana for work. Since I was in the area, I decided to go to a Polish restaurant in the area. I know that there was a big Polish population around Gary since the steel mills and other manufacturing jobs were in Gary. People that worked there lived in the surrounding area. I saw Big Frank's on TV and I saw that they do have great reviews here. I came here and I was impressed. 1. The area around Gary doesn't have a large Polish population anymore and have assimilated into American culture. With that being said, Big Frank's is a semi Americanized joint. Nothing wrong with that, but Stan, who is the owner/manager said that if he did not they would be out of business. So yes...they serve polish kielbasa on a bun with yellow American mustard...which is a big no no in Poland. Nevertheless Stan does a good job trying to keep authentic. He is a first generation American with his parents from Poland (I think he said Warsaw). So he does serve authentic guompki, makes his own kielabasa, and serves pierogies. All are very very good and authentic. His Polish mom taught him well. He does serve Polish alcohol such as Zywiec and many Polish vodka options. 2. They have a very good price. Everything is a lot cheaper and you can have a good meal for under 7.00. Fantastic. 3. They moved to a bigger space now with a bigger kitchen. He said he will be able to cook more Polish food then ever before. 4. Food was amazing. Yes...I had the kielbasa on the bun with American yellow mustard, but it was still damn good. Also the sausage is homemade and the French fries are homemade as well. The pierogies were fantastic. Hammond is a working class town with hard working families living there. It's definitely a meat and potatoes kind of town and Big Franks is a good kind of business for Hammond and the area. Stan is a real good dude and you can tell he is passionate. He really cares for his customers. For Polish immigrants who want to come here - Give it a try. Stan does understand the Polish language so you may speak with him in Polish. Also don't be surprised with some Americanized Polish food options, but he serves many authentic stuff and even has a deli selling Polish meats and such. He actually goes to the Chicago suburbs to purchase many Polish items. I give him much respect for that. So yea...whether if you are American or a Polish immigrant...give this place a shot. OMG! I ordered the .75 cent wings as an appetizer followed by the Warsaw Plate. The wings were meaty and perfectly cooked. The Warsaw Plate made me want to renounce my citizenship and pledge my loyalty to whatever country created such delicacies! Take it from me you'll be in luck if Jill is working. Delightful is a great way to describe my first experience at Frank's. Having been to many establishments serving Polish food and having eaten a lot of Polish food, I can highly recommend a trip to Frank's. A large menu of authentically prepared Polish food, with large servings. I had the Warsaw combination of sausage and sauerkraut and golabki (stuffed cabbage rolls). Delicious. But, the most impressive item - fruit-filled dessert pierogies. Served warm with powdered sugar. Extremely well done. Those are worth going back for by themselves. BTW - Polish music on the jukebox. Having recently watched an episode of Chicago's Best, having spent a good part of my teen years in Roxanna, and being part Polish, I made the trip to Big Frank's to see if they live up to the hype. First off the good news. The small storefront bar/deli/restaurant which was very busy on a Thursday night has a warm and neighborhoody feel. The not so good news. There was only one waitress working who was swamped bartending and taking care of several carry-out customers. We waited a good 15 minutes before she was able to take our order. I ordered the Zakopane Combo Plate which came with one burrito-sized stuffed cabbage (delicious), one piece of Frank's fresh sausage (very good), two potato pancakes (soggy) and a small dollop of kraut. My daughter had the cabbage and noodles plate. Usually, the cabbage is cut into small pieces and cooked in butter or margarine. The pieces of their cabbage were large chunks and barely cooked, the noodles were crusty, and it was way too peppery. We had also ordered a plate of pierogi to share. Now I'm not a fan of the popular Kasia's frozen pierogi, and these tasted exactly like Kasia's. They were overcooked and chewy, too browned, and crusty on the bottom. Stole my credit card to pay the bill without showing me the bill. When she finally brought it back I asked how much it was and she laughed and said she didn't look. Everything we tried here was large portions and freshly prepared. We tried, the homemade chips, great and large portions with seasoned salt on top. We tried the Warsaw plate with the smoked sausage with kraut and 2 giant golabki bread and butter on the side. My daughter got the hot dog with fries, SO MANY FRIES!! The fries were clearly homemade. We also tried the Krakow plate 2 golabki, kraut, 3 pierogi and a potato pancake. All delicious and very much everything you could want from homemade dishes. My other daughter had the polish burger. Another giant dish with a ton of fries. Every single dish needed a to-go box. We did try out the polish custard pie. It reminded us of creme puffs. It was a really nice light dessert highly recommended. I can't recommend this place enough. It's about 45 minutes away for us. We will (and have) made the repeat trip back. If fact my mom loved it so much she had them cater her 75th birthday which everyone, even the non-Polish folk LOVED! The wait staff was attentive and treated us like regulars on our first visit. I visited Big Frank's Sausage for the first time today. The restaurant is cozy and inviting without any pretense. It smells like my busia's kitchen and that is an awesome thing! My friend had a Warsaw Combo plate that had two big cabbage rolls, kraut, and a large link of smoked polish sausage...all for $10! I had a kura sandwich, grilled chicken with hand cut fries...$7.00. I am of Polish and Russian descent and I generally don't eat Polish food in a restaurant for fear of being disappointed, but next time, I am going for the sausage and pierogis! read more
