When planning to move a house locally this is such a great way to go. We had everything that we wanted moved by them boxed and or ready to move when they arrived (except for two beds that needed disassembled). They gave guidance on the size of the truck we would need and what supplies to have available for them to use. They were exceptionally courteous and arrived wearing masks. They took great care to load the truck to fully maximize the truck and the time for which we were paying. They organized the truck in sections for storage drop off and house delivery to make the process smooth. All we had to do was let them know what to put in the truck and let them do their job. We made the decision to hire them Thursday night and had it coordinated for Saturday morning. The only hiccup was they originally went to the wrong address and were 45 minutes late arriving so we didn't get the early start we were hoping for but it seemed to work out! read more

I used Big Guy for Hire just today for my move and I could not have been more pleased. They called when they were about a half hour away and when they arrived got right to work. They were quick and very careful with my belongings. They secured my things very well in the truck and nothing moved an inch in the almost 40 mile ride. They unloaded everything right where we asked them too and even put my bed back together. Their rates are also extremely reasonable. I was moving from downtown to Ferndale and needed to hire movers to move all of my belongings and to drive the truck. These guys were amazing. They loaded all my stuff up and packed it more efficiently into the truck then I could have even attempted. They made a day where I would usually get stressed out easy and carefree. I just moved from across the country and had a great experience using Big Guy For Hire to unload my truck when I arrived. John was quick to respond with a quote and helped me through the whole booking process. When a snowstorm delayed my plans by a day, I gave him a call and he was able to change my move date out one day and accommodated me without any hassle. I have used Big Guy three times this year. The first time we emptied a bedroom and things out of the garage into a U-Haul, which Derek drove to my storage unit, and he and Freeman unloaded. Before they left my house, though, they swept out my garage! Along the way, they moved things from the garage to the basement for me, as well. Derek and Freeman were concerned that I got what I needed done, that it was done right, and that they left me with neat spaces to work in. The second time I used them, Derek and Freeman came back to move some building supplies from the garage into the house for me. I wanted the space ready for when my builders showed up to work. They opened the pallets and boxes and carried all of the components of my shower into the emptied room, even helping me to make sure all of the parts on the list were there. Again, they bagged up the trash and swept out the garage for me. The third time, Derek and Chris came to unpack and assemble my new adjustable beds, after removing the old one. Not being able to get under that bed for many years, I had a lot of vacuuming to do, and Chris helped me clean while Derek was in the garage unpacking. We had instructions to follow, and things were not always clear, but Derek was patient and listened to suggestions I had - which not all men will do! I will have them back soon to help when the new mattresses arrive, and again after my contractor is finally done with the work in our house and Derek and his partner of the day can finally move me back in to that room we emptied last February! John is great at scheduling his crews and working with the business end of things, and Derek and the two crew members he brought have always been easy to work with, pleasant, and concerned with my needs being met with the job, not with getting out of there and on to the next thing. Anyone who needs real men to do a real job - Call John, he will advise you, give you a quote, the two experiences I have with Big Guy for Hire, each 10 stars. All good. Twice, I have called Big Guy for Hire for my moving service. First time was a local move. A one+ hour drive to my new destination. No issue with the distance. John was informative, no hidden gotcha's with these guys. Derek #1 Jenga Master, he is the best at (a insane amount) he calculating items to fit into a moving truck, and or cube. This truly is a learned art. My first move was a 17ft Moving Truck, Big Guy For Hire, moving is stressful situation, being that these guys are professionals, they calm, doing their part, they do not require babysitters, they go, do and get it done, this made everything so much easier. I had no stress. Derek was a huge help, as a human being. My 2nd move, I called John. I asked for Derek specifically. I so happy he was available. I requested two men. Derek and Derek, I found there is TWO Derek's, John set up the appt, they arrived on time. This move was different. I was moving out of state. No truck, I had two Relo-cubes delivered to be filled. John was attentive, he had a short list of what I required for the Relo-Cubes, for the guys to load my items in the cubes proper: that my items arrived intact. His info priceless. The short list of items required, made this smooth for the guys. Derek & Derek too, they know how to and what not to do with containers, trucks. There wasn't any hmm, calculating how to add my entire household into two cubes. As I stared at the cubes, I thought it was impossible. Each Derek, knocked it out, done. My two Relo-cubes were picked up and traveled from Michigan to Florida. They arrived at my new destination. Upon opening the cubes, what did I find? One packed to the top. The other was 3/4 way full. Derek used rope, as John said I would need. He interwove it like Spider Man throughout my belongings -both Cubes. Besides a slight shifting, which was expected, all of my personal items, furniture, everything was same as when Derek & Derek packed it. No damage, no unfortunate mishaps by how my stuff was loaded. All was intact, Everything from start to end was 100, Gold. These are Good Guys, Moving is hard work, they give their all, which makes it so less stressful. * D&D I wish you could drive here, to move me a 3rd time, I am coming back, Moving one more time, back to the Mitten. These guys came out same day because I was in a bind with my previous movers causing damage. They came out late to fit me in and worked past dark to make sure the job got done. They worked at a different job all day and by time they got to me, still were highly skilled, positive, energetic, and the sweetest guys! Derek and his crew worked magic fitting over half of my 3 story home into 1 POD. He was so careful with my belongings and packed them to ensure they wouldn't shift during POD pickup and delivery to the new house. John was amazing too! He made me feel so comfortable after the awful morning I had had, he gave me suggestions on where to get cheaper packing supplies and what I could do before the crew got to my house to make things extra efficient! John, Derrick and Shawn just literally left our house and I thought they were so awesome that I wanted to record my review right away. They are the most professional, most friendly, most easy-to-work-with movers I have *ever* met, and I'm someone who has moved a LOT all over the country and had many good experiences. Big Guy For Hire blows them all away. They were punctual and fast, seemed to have nearly super-human strength, handled everything with care, were extremely polite and kind (especially to our dog and baby) and just made moving easy - which is typically a stressful experience. I called John yesterday morning to see if he could help us with shuffling some really heavy/bulky furniture and a treadmill around the house. He had another job this morning, and he estimated getting to us around noon. He called at 12:20 to let me know he was on his way over, and arrived soon after. One VERY happy customer here! We cannot recommend these gentlemen highly enough! Looking for help, I reached out to several of those top rated moving help listings on Yelp. John from Big Guys responded within a few hours and even though I was calling ahead (lesson learned; month end moving, find your help several weeks in advance!) he tucked me into his last available time slot on one of the dates I had selected. He indicated what time would be the latest they would arrive, and that they could be earlier. He did a fine job of managing my expectations. They were able to come early, called to check if that was ok, then arrived at the time they communicated. We were fully aware ahead of time what, when, and at what cost to expect! Communication was right on point!! When Herb, Derrick, and John arrived, and didn't appear 'big' we all had a good chuckle. They were quick to prove that the 'big' translates into BIG help; and proceeded to exceed our expectations! What happened in the next 7 hours was fast and even a little fun! Herb packed the 26foot truck like the nimble professional that he is, while John and Derrick pulled all the heavy items and boxes out of every nook and cranny in this house! Even though we all took a lunch break (hubby and I happily supplied great sub sandwiches, and lots of water and a Gatorade or two) not a moment felt wasted! These three gentlemen were a blur of activity! On arrival at the new place, they were super quick in unloading and wonderful in placing all the big pieces in the places hubby and I had determined they should go. They even handled the disassembling and reassembling of the bed frames during this move! John was great! I needed someone to load my truck, drive and unload. He was recommend to me by a classmate of mine in grad school in Michigan. After he and his staff helper got to my apt in Ann Arbor, they packed the truck with my 1 bedroom apt-sized amount of belongings very quickly and carefully. All of my fragiles were intact after we arrived in Chicago 4 hours later. John also unloaded the truck JUST as quickly. The pricing was reasonable and professionalism top-notch. Did a great job for a great price. I was looking for movers to help my mother move to Ohio and decided upon Big Guy for hire due to their Yelp reviews and website. They were very quick movers and got the truck loaded up fast. When a problem arose with a hand truck wheel falling off, John stopped the clock until the problem was fixed. When my mothers truck arrived in Ohio to be unloaded by another group of movers, the movers unloading her truck commented on how well the truck was loaded and said that "This is the way we pack our trucks". Derek and Herb(?) were lifesavers. My wife decided it was time to remodel the entire basement of our Ferndale bungalow. I dreaded the idea of moving all of her extensive collections of clocks, dishes, silverware, cookware, etc. along with my electronics collectibles (VHS or audio cassette players anyone?) out of the basement in order to get the work done. Initially, she was going to rent a storage unit for the month or so the job would require but I convinced her it would be more efficient to move it to the garage and then back. BigGuys came and got everything into the garage in around 2 hrs. and this morning (Sat. before T-Day) they came and took most of it back into our newly remodeled basement which we will proceed to fill up with all the stuff we had and more! I am too old (69) and have a bad back and there was no way I was going to do it or find friends who would help me with the dreaded task. Let me just preface this review by saying that previous to going to John (the owner) at Big Guy for Hire; we had dealt with a larger national moving company that basically stole our deposit, as they never actually showed up to pick up our belongings; and a week after the move was to happen, has yet to call us back, despite several voicemails and emails from us. I connected with John a little over a week ago about helping my parents move from Detroit to Boston, after the other movers never showed up. Early this morning, he had arrived at Boston. While I was not present myself for the pick up and the delivery; my parents were and they had only good things to say about John and his movers. Lastly, the rate he offered was definitely one that was on par with what the bigger companies were offering. If you're paying the same amount of money, why not get quality service along with it? They were amazing. They quickly and carefully moved all of our heavy furniture and boxes and even drove the truck. They also took apart and reassembled all of the big furniture. Spent a long day with us making sure everything went well. Nothing was damaged in the move and I would use them again. All 3 of the guys were extremely nice and easy to talk to. They even went out of the way to stage the furniture in the basement and knew how to place things without me even asking. Pretty good. They were on time, extremely professional and helpful. I actually rented a truck that was smaller than what I needed, so they went with me to switch the truck out. On the way there and back, they gave me tons of advice on driving the 26' truck with my jeep attached. Got everything done in a reasonable amount of time. I knocked off a star because it turns out they didn't secure the moving blankets to my furniture, so when I got to Boston, a lot of the expensive stuff was damaged. Well, John certainly lives up to his nickname, Big John. I also knew almost instantly that he's a great guy because my guinea pig told me this. No, she doesn't actually talk to me, but they are great judges of character and body language. She's typically quite leery of new people but will warm to you and come over for some head scratches once you've visited 2 or 3 times. Well, basically the first thing John did in my home was reach into the cage to coax her over to say hi. Miraculously, she (cautiously) came right to him and even let him give her a quick head scratch. So, I knew right then that he's good people, and he certainly proved this throughout the move. They did show up about 15 minutes late, but I wasn't ready for them on time anyway, and my subdivision is confusing to navigate through when you don't know it. They got to work right away (after saying hi to the pigs) and got the truck packed really quickly. They handled everything very carefully and I could tell that they were planning how to load things into the truck along the way. They were friendly and kind and definitely knew what they were doing. I handed out water and brownies (baked goods are one of the best ways to get great service from just about anyone FYI) and then we set off for the new place. Unloading the were just as speedy. I was moving into a 2nd floor apartment so they had to cart everything up the stairs but they had no problems. They placed furniture where we wanted it and piled up boxes out of the way as we requested. It was well after noon at this point so we ordered pizza, which arrived shortly before they finished up. After they got the last of the stuff in and moved the truck for us, we sat down to eat and chatted a bit. Both John and Derrick are great guys. Once I was sure they were well fed they headed out. From the first phone call I got good vibes and definitely feel like I hired the right people. We will be using them again next weekend to move my boyfriend into our new place and both of us are really glad to know that John and Derrick will be on the job again. Definitely eases some of the stress for his move. One thing I will say is that John is a working guy running a business. If you expect to be coddled by a receptionist with a sugar-sweet voice telling you everything you want to hear, then you may be disappointed with your discussions with John. If however, you appreciate someone who works hard, knows his stuff, and takes the time to run all aspects of his business (including answering the phone calls) then Big Guy for Hire is your man. Looks like there's some kind of bizarre war going on on this review page. A bit unsettling. Anyways, we moved near the end of August out of a 1-bedroom apartment into a larger condo that we had just bought. On the morning of our move, we got a call from them saying they were on their way, and they ended up being a few minutes late (maybe about 7 minutes as far as I can remember), which wasn't a problem because we were frantically still packing like lazy bums anyways. Our two movers, Derek and Jake, were quick, skillful, and exceedingly polite (it got a little weird to me just how polite they were. Do people honestly demand that kind of interaction? Maybe I'm the weird one, but I'd be perfectly happy with movers that were silent, blunt, to the point, and viciously efficient). Side tangent: It was fascinating to see how Derek packed the truck I rented. We had the same truck (17') as the last time we moved, and when we did it ourselves a year ago, at the end we were struggling to find enough room in the truck to hold our crap. Not with Derek--he went at it like some kind of freakish Tetris savant. What was a hot mess spilling over into multiple car trips in our hands, only took up about 2/3rds of the truck when Derek was done with it (not putting in any items lengthwise seems to be the key to success). I drove the truck to our new place with Derek and Jake following behind, where they proceeded to once again quickly and efficiently unload before they were on their way. Nothing broken, everything where I wanted it to be, and the move was completed in 3 hours. I'd highly recommend Derek and Jake again.
