I also ordered a "local favorite" the pandan latte, I'm not sure what I expected maybe more herbal but it seemed like coffee to me, but not as bold. The service was friendly and quick considering that the line never died down. The line at the one available bathroom never died down either. Possible gift card scams. Please be aware. I went to this coffee shop a few times in 2023, and had a good opinion of the place. I hadn't been in a while because it's somewhat out of the way from where I live and work. Though I received a gift card and was excited to use it. Fast forward to today... went to use the card and was told there was nothing on it. Odd because I'd never used it before. I know my friend wouldn't gift me a fake card. Only thing I can think of is the employee that did the transaction didn't transfer the money to the card. Was it intentional? I'm not sure. My recommendation is don't buy gift cards from this place. I enjoy a good cup of coffee, and occasional latte. I have tried many a bean/roaster from around the world. Big Island Coffee is consistently one of my favorite roasters. They source their beans from different regions around the Hawaiian islands and apply different roasting methods including Barrel-aging their beans. Full disclosure, I have a coffee subscription with them and have been a member for several years, getting coffee delivered to LA every other month. This still allows me to try other beans, but BICR is still the best. I've even done blind taste tests w/ friends w/ beans from different roasters, and BICR comes out on top. Needless to say, I was super excited when I saw they were opening up a cafe in Hilo, HI. I was planning on visiting Hilo so I added the cafe to my list of things to do & see. It has its own parking lot. The cafe was cute and super comfortable with a good amount of seating (tables and bar stools). Great viby music was in the background. It seems like they were training some staff, but everyone was very friendly and working to make the cafe run effectively. Yami was super knowledgeable and an asset to the cafe. They also have a roasting facility next door. You can view their roasting process, equipment, beans and barrel through a window in the cafe. I ordered a vanilla latte because I've never tried an espresso drink from them. The Homemade vanilla syrup sold me. It was smooth and silky. I enjoyed it so much, I also ordered a pour over of Kona Moon. It was also buttery smooth. They serve popovers from a local bakery with lilikoi butter. It went well with the coffee drinks. I also bought their anniversary blend and a 93 point Kona Peaberry. I'm bummed that I didn't pack my mini grinder and Aeropress, so I'll have to wait to get home to try these. They had a steady stream of customers and I can imagine that it'll just get busier as word gets out. I don't get to Hilo very often, but I'm glad I had the chance to visit the cafe and will look forward to my upcoming coffee delivery when I get back home. read more

Just wow! From the vegan salad to the coffee cake, the food was so good and fresh! And the homemade pandas syrup made my latte so delicious! You can tell the coffee quality just from the perfect smell as the espresso our pour over is being made. Everything was just perfect! And we loved the sustainability features in the cafe. You won't find many pour-over coffee places on the Big Island, so I'm grateful Big Island Coffee Roasters exists. Yes, pour-over coffee isn't everyone's cup of joe these days, but for those (like myself) who enjoy it, they offer a select variety of Ka'u and Kona coffees, ranging from medium light to dark roasts. I tend to prefer the medium and medium light roasts' flavor profiles. I think they play it smart here, using a Hario Switch and a complete immersion method (because Ka'u and Kona beans are pretty expensive). As with immersion brewing, you don't get that very acidic cup and lesser clarity due to lesser/balanced extraction, but it still produces a flavorful and smooth cup. Whenever I visit home, I will always be grabbing a cup or two (or many) at Big Island Coffee Roasters! PS - The staff here is very nice, and the ambiance is good, but it can sometimes be crowded and noisy! read more

This is the only place I order coffee from. I'm beyond picky and have spent decades finding one better supplier after another, until I found Big Island Coffee Roasters. This has been my go-to for about 6+ years now and to date I can't find anyone to surpass their blends. Their Kona coffees are actually Kona, not 1% Kona or fake Kona. I don't care how bad life gets, I have a cup of Kona Moon and somehow I can tolerate all of it. ...for a while, certainly long enough to finish the cup. I've given Kona Moon as a gift to my more coffee-centric friends and their responses were pretty favorable. So far no one has topped them. read more

I ordered hot drip coffee first time I was here, the first cup was marginally hot, it's great that they offer a refill, but the last time I was here the refill was room temperature, today the refill was marginally hot. I rank coffee shops but the flavor of their drip coffee and the correct temperature, if it's not hot then it's a failure, they have to try harder. You can't be hard pressed to find good coffee on the big island...that said there's a lot of places that just make coffee as boring as you can find on the mainland. Not here. Just a fantastic cup of black joe to go is what I got. And some very pricey local beans which, while expensive, are only slightly higher price point as you'd find any roaster in San Francisco. Family and I were staying on the Hilo side and decided to drop by here on the way to the Liliʻuokalani Gardens. As soon as we opened the door, the scent of freshly ground coffee filled our noses. The store was cozy with about 6 small tables. The line was short and service was great. Not a coffee aficionado but here is the feedback on the drinks: Cappuccino - Very nice, would get again Americano good - Very hot and took some time to cool down Pour over - fine, prefer the cappuccino Food: Popover was good and had the texture of a cream puff without filling. Came with a side of custard for dipping. PB&J Hawaiian style was sweet and the jelly was kind of honey flavored. Not bad at all but I can see why some people would not like it. Back to the stunning pig. It's part of what makes this place Hawaiian. Tradition has it that pigs were associated with various Polynesian gods and were treated with great and respect. Current opinion on the animals is more mixed, what with their expanding population and interference in various agricultural pursuits. But the lineage of the prodigious ungulates stretches back to the first settlers of Hawaii, who brought little pigs with them. Captain Cook's pigs, not so little. Size aside, their history is embedded in Hawaii's culture and traditions. Big Island Coffee is a culturally correct alternative to corporate brew. read more
