I usually asked for minimal sweetness in my drinks, and when I asked for that, the nice worker did mention that they do not add in extra sugar, so the kumquat lemon tea will be a bit tangy. It def was, but perfect because I prefer tangy over overly sweet. The gyokuro was a bit similar to matcha, but without the matcha taste, and it was unsweetened. I confronted her and asked what happened to my jasmine milk tea. She insisted that I did not order that and I ordered matcha. I never utter the word matcha so how did I get this?? She then proceeded to lie and say she recited the order of my drink. She recited my brother drinks and not mine. I never even heard her say matcha at the end. Delicious and refreshing but no boba I was excited to see a a bubble tea shop in Hilo. I was definitely having some boba cravings so we all walked inside to satisfy our hankering. We proceeded to place our orders individually, 6 orders total. There was one employee handling the shop, she did her best but service was not the best. I chose a large drink of Big Island Fruit smoothie and hubby, of course, his Avocado smoothie. Guess what??? NO BOBA!! Bummer! They ran out and were still waiting for a shipment of these chewy balls. I love hearing when a new boba place opens up! Especially in Hilo when boba is still considered a new culture. It's located in the little food area across of Miyo's on Manono Street. There's a lot of parking stalls but during the lunch and dinner rush hours, the lot can be really packed. I've been here only a couple of times. The first time when they first opened, I wasn't too impressed (can't remember what I had gotten but definitely a milk tea). This time, I got their real taro milk tea and asked for more tea flavor in it. My drink came out blended (due to the taro) and looked good! I could really taste the tea flavor (yesss, just what I like) and also the taro bits blended into the slushie. It also wasn't too sweet, yay! However, I thought my drink tasted a bit too watery. My friend had gotten their Earl Grey milk tea, and she thought her drink was a bit too watery and lacking milk. My milk tea experiences here were alright. Big Island PT was close to a bunch of other eateries nearby and stopped in to try out their specials. We came in towards the late time and there were a small line forming but glad to have put in our orders in. We ordered the strawberry smoothie with 25% sugar and the drink was perfect. Was not super sweet and just right. The cost were average for the area and everyone was happy with the service and drinks. I do recommend and will be stopping in for more delight. I got the big island milk tea (their signature drink) with the brown sugar boba and I was really disappointed with the drink. My milk tea was pretty diluted and I couldn't really taste the tea at all. I even asked for less ice. The boba is pretty tasteless, but at least it wasn't stale and hard. The matcha milk tea was not good either. It also tasted diluted and there was no hint of sweetness at all. I love boba and I guess I'm spoiled by the plentiful options in SoCal, but this is just not good. Perhaps a little pricey, but it is worth it for a high quality drink made with fresh and sometimes local ingredients. Oh yeah, and I think they have the best, chewiest boba compared to other boba shops on the island! My favorite drinks are the brown sugar milk tea with boba and cream cheese foam, lilikoi tea with rainbow jelly, and honeydew milk tea with boba. The brown sugar milk tea is aesthetically pleasing with brown sugar ribbons cascading down the inside of the cup. So sweet and creamy. The lilikoi tea is wonderfully tart and refreshing. The rainbow jelly add a punch of fruity flavor. Perfect on hot and humid Hilo afternoon. Honeydew milk tea is like their original milk tea with the lovely addition of sweet, melon-y goodness. It is such a pretty shade of pastel green. Overall, I highly recommend Big Island Pearl Tea. Their drinks are so delicious and their service is wonderful.
