I got the "smoked" chicken and ribs plate The chicken tasted boiled and had NO flavor whatsoever and was TOUGH. The ribs had a slight smoked flavor but very greasy. Went on a Thursday night while traveling for work. They had live music and the decor reminds me of places I've hung out as a kid, like when you build a fort or get to "finish the basement" as a kid for a space to hangout with your friends. It was pretty awesome! The service is fantastic! Attentive and super friendly. They treated us as if we were regulars even though the group is was with was from Boston and in town for the first time ever. We planned this to meet Joe, my Wife's Son, at "Big John's Feed Lot by Brenda" there at 12:30pm and we arrived right on time. Last time we were here was for Dinner and it was crowded but a table was available pretty quick. We sat in a corner and the lighting was kind of on the dark side for pictures, but not that way this time. The parking lot was full and just about every table was taken - except for one that they pointed out for us. While looking over the menu (even tho we know what we want) we placed our drink orders. I am going with the Arnold Palmer, my Wife is having a Diet Coke and Joe wants water. The Rusticness of this place will amaze you. And like I said before, it's like you built this for your kid in the backyard. It's Very Unique and kind of takes you back to the Western Days of Yesteryear. Love the Decor all around, with a lot of it honoring the Duke, John Wayne. Drinks arrived and we toasted. I've not had an Arnold Palmer for sometime now and I enjoyed this. It's Iced Tea with a splash of Lemonade, but it's usually more than just a splash. If you have not tried this, Ya Gotta Give It A Go - it's Really Goooood. Anyway, Brenda is our Server and after we chatted for some time we placed our orders. They treat everyone here like Family, the good side. We are all having the Thursday Lunch Special, "Chicken Fried Steak" ($10.00); CFS smothered in White Creamy Gravy, served with Green Beans with BACON, a large Homemade Fresh Roll with Butter, Mashed Potatoes with White Creamy Gravy (or French Fries) and a Fresh Salad with choice of Dressing (all chose Ranch) - and, again, all of this for only 10 Bucks. My Wife and I are sharing our CFS because she is not very hungry, so, she ordered a Salad for her. Joe also ordered some Onion Rings ($6.99). While we waited, Brenda, then another Server, stopped by to chat - and this place is 'packed'. Soon our Salads arrived and they are really good. Freshness with a Crunch. Salads were gone in no time and shortly after the CFS's arrived - and they look Delicious - and a nice size. The Roll is Huge and I buttered it up first. You can tell it's Homemade because No Place would ever make them this good. It's like going to Grandmas House, you know, the one that can bake - and she pulls them out of the Oven and serves you one. The flavor along tells you it's Homemade Goodness. Now for the CFS. I sliced off a nice size piece for my Lovely Wife, and it cuts very easy - with some White Creamy Gravy atop. I will tell you what she said a little later. Now for me - Sliced off a bite and I can tell you, this is Really Good. No gristle at all throughout the entire CFS - and it's a nice thickness with lots of flavor - and that White Creamy Gravy is some of the Best you will every experience. The Mashed Potatoes are the Perfect Thickness and topping if off with that White Creamy Gravy makes it even more Perfectly. The Green Beans are served Hot with BACON adding what BACON does - making the Greens even better than they are normally. Love the flavor of those Greens and that BACON --- (drooling is good). I cannot get over how good that Chicken Fried Steak is. I can say it is right up there with the Best CFS I ever had - and that was at the "Potatoe Patch" that was on FM-1960 a few years back. Those Rolls also reminded me of the "Potatoe Patch" on them being Homemade & Tasty, but they don't throw them at you here - which I miss, that was always fun. The Breading on the CFS is Very Light and Flaky giving you the Perfect Crunch. My Wife said the same thing, this CFS is one of the Best you will ever have. The Golden Brown Onion Rings came out right after the CFS's did, with a side of Ranch. We all LOVE Onion Rings and there is a lot of them in that Basket. The Breading on these is like the Breading on the CFS - it's Perfectly Lightly Crunchable with Thick White Onion Rings. These are also some of the Best you will ever have. As we were finishing up all this Deliciousness, they brought out their "Oreo Cookie Chocolate Pudding" Cups as a complimentary dessert for all of us to enjoy. This was AwesomelyCreamyChocolatyLiciousness - I LOVE Chocolate and this is really Chocolaty. They do this for all their Customers, showing their appreciation and thanking you for coming in. Brenda earned the "Dollar-Bow-Tie" Award for going 'above-n-beyond' the norm, which Big John's Feed Lot by Brenda does for every customer every time the come in - it's just what they normally do here. I know it's a ways out, but if you are ever cruising down I-20 and you come across Big Spring, TX, stop in and enjoy you some good ol' fashion Texas Hospitality and some Mighty Good Grub no matter what day of the week - except Week-Ends, because they are closed Sat & Sun. Very good BBQ - the brisket was towards the smoky end of the spectrum, but no too much. The meat was lean but moist - perfect combination, and very generous helping. Limited selection of sides, but they were very good. My wife had the fried mushrooms (a starter), and even with my help we had enough of them leftover for another meal. They were, like the beef, very tasty. But if the food was good, the service was even better. I'd go back just to visit with the staff even if the food wasn't good. For my three sides, I stuck with my keto diet and had slaw, slaw and slaw. The food arrived a few minutes later on a styrofoam plate with plastic cutlery. The sausage is absolutely perfect and I would just like to mention that I can NEVER find sausage that I like. Bottom Line: Generous portions from friendly folks in uber rustic setting. Cheap eats, given the mondo portions. Top Line: This diamond in the rough is plenty rough, but solid jewel through and through. I hit up the Big John's crew for a round of BBQ meat & sides on a road trip into Texas for (no surprise) BBQ, BBQ, and more BBQ. Went with sliced brisket sandwich as the carne of choice, cole slaw side, & root beer liquefaction. Root beer came as a quart Styrofoam cup full of ice & soda, plus a 12 oz can of HEB root beer as a refil (or to take along home). Mondo!! Brisket sandwich was on sturdy bun & well drenched with sweetish sauce that tasted fine, but didn't show much heat. Meat was very tender & kind of in the middle on juiciness. Smoke note was downplayed, not the acrid smoke bite that gives some joints their distinction in the BBQ world. *Lots!* of meat between the bunnage so generosity of portions. Quite a filling sandwich. Cole slaw was square chopped, vs threads. Not a bad thing just a bit different. Dressing was quite smooth & rich mayo based with not a lot of complexity. I noted no ground pepper & not any saltiness to open up the mayo's flavor. The vinegar tang of the mayo was the only zing in the dressing. Passable coleslaw, but not earth shaking. Staff is 10 out of 5 stars for hyper friendliness, customer engagement with every soul who walked in the rickety front door, and unmitigated energy. We stopped here for lunch during our trip back to DFW. As we pulled up we immediately noticed the glut of vehicles. When we walked in there were no seats available. While I am not fond of places that appear to be "Dives", this place had a very high rating and the crowd showed this place was going to be good. Most vehicles outside had Halliburton logos. The overall place is small - it can seat maybe 50 people tops. After 15 minutes we got a table. I noticed there were a couple large groups and their orders slowing things down. Overall a diverse crowd of old and young people. The staff appeared stressed and busy. We waited over 35 minutes for our food. The Chicken Fried Steak was okay. Not the best I've had, average. The Brisket was dried and tough. Maybe we got the last of it after the horde did? The Ribs were very good! Large and Juicy. The beans were really good! All side items were good! Not only the worst bbq but some of the worst food I've ever gotten from a restaurant. As for the the ribs, I was asked if I wanted BBQ sauce on the ribs or off...well in my opinion this is not a question for a BBQ restaurant in Texas. Again in my opinion of you have to but BBQ sauce on it something is wrong with it. Totally my opinion. Now the rib was not bad, however the back membrane was left on well for me that's a big no no. I don't want to have to fight the bone for my meat. Tasted ok not the worst I have eaten. Sides well I'm lead to believe these are removed from a container of some sort, not made in house, why would I say that, there was a waitress filling small containers out of a large prepackaged container with what appeared to be banana pudding in the corner of the main dining room.
