Stopped on our way through Big Spring for Sunday lunch and we picked a winner. Gills is a home town chicken place and the decor isn't fancy but the food was delicious. It has counter service and inside seating if you're eating there. The staff were very friendly. I got a 3 piece combo, white meat with coleslaw. My order included 2 large chicken breasts and 1 wing. I was glad I was hungry or I couldn't have eaten it all. We also had a chicken tenders salad that was delicious and an ample serving. Our total tab was about $25 and well worth it. I'm making myself hungry again just writing about our meal. Go to Gills if you're near Big Spring and want good fried chicken. read more

So I'm on my way to Houston and stopped for the night, half way, in Big Spring, mid afternoon. After settling in my hotel room and calling people to let them know I was ok, my next task was to find some dinner. All I had had was a breakfast taquito about 9am. So I was dealing with some serious hunger pains. I searched on yelp and didn't really see many places that sounded good or if they did they were closed (?!?) on Saturdays and didn't open until Monday or Tuesday. Must be nice to be able to have a dine in restaurant and only need to be open 3-4 days a week. But maybe they still can't get help In Big Spring. I dunno. So then in my search I come across Gills Fried Chicken. Well I can always eat Fried chicken. In fact there were two chain chix restaurants in town I was already considering but this was local. So in the reviews I saw that they are ACTUALLY more famous for their STEAKFINGERS than the chicken ... well now I gotta go! It says they hand bread them and make each order fresh. I'm already in my car looking for the address... only 1.1 miles down the same road my hotel is on... awesome. I get there and it's called Gills Crispy Chicken. On the door is an award posting from the local paper that they had come in first in chicken and steak fingers and 2nd in fish for 2025. So I was even more excited to try this food. I ordered a 4 pc steak finger which only comes with gravy and biscuit but you can make it a combo with a side and a drink or two sides and no drink. I had a drink back at the room so I got the two sides. Fries and green beans. Total it was about $10.79. I also added one catfish fillet for $3.79. And a chicken wing. I forget how much it was. I wanted to try all they had. But I forget to get some livers and gizzards! I also got an extra cup of gravy cuz I don't use ketchup for fries. Total for all was about $25, but ala Carte always costs a bit more. Counter help was very gracious and helpful with my ordering. Parking lot was clean. They had a good amount of chicken ready and LOTS of premade cups of what I assume were gravy, mashed potatoes, Mac and cheese etc and even fried pies. I got there about 5:30. I joked with them that they looked they were ready for a big rush. So I got back to my room and dug in. First the fish. They set me UP! I got a catfish fillet, some lemon slices, tartar sauce and a hush puppie! This fish was delicious, fried perfect. Still tender in the middle, crispy in the edges, slightly sweet. So good. The chicken wing, I got to try Their chicken, it was so crispy-crunchy! And juicy! Very flavorful... the green beans, were Kentucky Wonders made with onions and bacon. Omg... these green beans took me right back to my great grandma's table. She used to grow them in her garden and can them and have them all year long. This is all the green beans she ever ate, so if you were at her house that's the kind you ate, made this same way... I can't believe they were this good from a fast food place! They needed to offer quarts of these for sale for people's thanksgiving! The fries were nice and this, potato fluffy inside and crispy outside. Perfect for dipping in pepper gravy. But thos steak fingers !!! So so SO GOOD. Hand battered like a chicken fried steak cut into strips, battered and chicken fried . I swear I had more like 6 pieces in my 4 piece box. The flavor was amazing, and worked perfectly dipped in that creamy white peppered gravy. I think this was maybe cube steaks cut into fingers? They were so delicious. Inside dining area is small does not look all that clean !!! So we went through the drive in window & was probably worse due to we could not see what they were boxing up for us !!!! We get home & the chicken was re-dipped in the fryer making the chicken dry & tasteless !!! The girl working the window just handed us food shut the window without saying anything to us !!!! Simple. The best steak finger basket I've ever had! That is all I can say. Hand cut individually breaded and fried. Really great meal. Service is just okay but manageable. But the food is outstanding. Service is lacking. Not an issue if you order to go. But watching the service for the in-house orders, hmmmmm! I'll still be back for the steak fingers. read more

I was not leaving this city until I found a local food joint, so I drove away from the freeway on a major street and ran into Gills's. I made an excellent choice. No crowds (it was after lunch), the chicken was crispy and tasty, the service friendly. If I was staying in the area, I'd return to try the gizzards, liver, catfish, bread pudding et al. read more

So greasy, just wasn't impressed but people love this place from what I hear. It just didn't live up to the hype.

I will say very fast service and good location. I loved the tenders fresh and crispy. The mash potatoes were well whipped. The gravy and biscuits I could eat by their self. Great food all the way around. read more

Good catfish. But can't recommend. Perhaps I should just not have gotten their chicken or maybe withdrawn my business from them altogether as it had made me ill 7 out of ten times I've been there. It's nearly impossible to get me ill anyways as I have a somewhat Keith Richards style iron constitution, but this place did it. And Hypylori at that, which if you are unlearned can stay with you for months afterwards. Don't recommend. But if you go there just order the catfish and leave that bizarre nasty chicken alone. read more

Great chicken in big spring. You get what you pay for but if they are busy you are going to have to wait for what you paid for.

I really don't know how this place got 5 stars. First I had to wait in the drive thru before I could even order for 20 mins. It was dinner time and I understood it usually gets busy around this time. Then had to wait on my food for another 10 mins. And the lady at the drive thru didn't even remember the two drinks I've ordered, so I had to repeat it. I ordered a #5 3 piece dark with coleslaw and French fries. Real deal meal with sprite and the 5 jalapeno for 1.79. My whole meal came out too be $19.66. Which wasn't bad. Came home and I'm missing my fries, a piece of chicken, and my jalapenos. Then they didn't even offer to put any ketchup packets in. I'm not sure if Dallas has me spoiled, but I am very disappointed. I stumbled across this place on Yelp and decided to check it out. The fried chicken was fantastic and the bread pudding was amazing. True to the name, the chicken was surprisingly crispy unlike normal chicken tenders that are fried and then get soggy when they're in a box. Service was pretty slow because they got hit with one large order and the cook couldn't prioritize but it was worth the wait. I'll definitely be going back next time I drive through. read more

The chicken is great....if you get your correct order. I have been coming here since last august; and, it has only been in the last 4-6 months that I have consistently getting the wrong order. I used to think my order may have been to complex.. 3 piece mix with leg a wing and (substitute a breast for 89 cents) since the order is so hard to get right. tonight we had some bad weather come through. not only did we not get my order the way I ordered it we also did not get the drinks we ordered...my wife and I used to go here a couple times a week. now its every other week because they cant get the order right. It was just ok. Chicken is pretty good, biscuits were pretty good, okra was soggy, taters were good. Service was quick, but I went in between lunch and dinner. The girl at the window was pretty rude. It took around 15 minutes to get my food. They literally had everything I ordered ready and I was the only one in the restaurant without food yet. It really felt like they just didn't want to serve me my food. After I got my food the first thigh I ate was banging. SO good! The next two were sub par, both were dry and tasteless. The fried okra was awesome though. The restaurant, men's bath room, and the visible area of the kitchen were FILTHY. I am by no means a clean freak but the cleanliness of the restaurant makes me question if the food I ate is gonna make me sick. The kid battering the chicken did come out of the bathroom with a paper towel so I figure he at least washed his hands. This restaurant does not have an "employees must wash hands sign in the bathroom." I found that very odd and off putting. May try this place one more time if I'm feeling like fried chicken, but definitely not a "must" eat. read more

Love Gill's!! The chicken is as close to home fried as you can get. Gravy is the bomb, as much that I set it as a standard for comparison for all other restraunts. You get a whole corn cob, instead of a half. Biscuits are soft and flakey. They keep melted butter in sqeeze bottles on the table. Sunday afternoon. Big Spring, TX. Where to eat? Pull out the phone, check Yelp, head to Gill's. Got the tenders, biscuits and gravy, and corn on the cob. None of it was spectacular. Although the portion of chicken was pretty large (4-tender meal), the chicken quality was mediocre, with lots of tough bits. The corn was blah. The biscuit was yummy. I went to Gil's 2 nights ago and wanted a chicken leg and then I get up to order and was told they didn't have any. They could make it but it would take 20 minutes! 20 minutes for a chicken leg? This chicken is simply the best chicken you will find anywhere. And by anywhere I mean planet earth. It's been amazing forever. It sucked several years ago when ownership changed, but they've gone back to the old recipe and it is the best of the best. We've been eating a Gill's for years and the food quality gets worse every time and the service from kids that don't give a care. We can only afford to eat out about once a week but when we can we want good food. Tonight the chicken wasn't cooked all the way, the "mashed potatoes" we more grainy than normal and cold.
