My boyfriend and I frequent coffee shops while traveling and this place was conveniently within walking distance of our hotel, the Kimpton. The decor was a little unimpressive but the coffee was great! I ordered the White Nitro which I've never had before and it was super tasty. I also tried my boyfriends Espresso and the pour over he ordered. Both very good. The place is very simple, with minimal seating, so I'd say it's a good place for grab and go coffee when you might be in a bit of a rush! Although hidden this coffee shop really surprised me for being in the loop. It's no surprise downtown coffee shops have little to no seating and almost encourage you to take your coffee and leave. I was glad to see a number of indoor and outdoor seats with plentiful outlets as well. I liked the vibe of this place. The decor and set up was really neat. A cool location of the city too, a very quick walk to the river walk. I ordered a mocha, which was really interesting because it had cinnamon in it, which is not something I've ever gotten in a mocha before. Racist manager (bald guy with glasses) he tried to make a big deal out of trying to get an exchange. Which almost never happens because every coffee shop i have been to makes sure you're happy with your purchase. He was so blinded by his hate that he tried giving me the same beans i was exchanging because they were too acidic. Instead of recommending me something more to my palate. He tried telling me he was gonna get in trouble for doing a simple exchange. I have a hard time believing a big company like big shoulders are such tight asses. I've been going here for about a year to buy beans and sometimes a drink but I'm giving up. The food sucks, the atmosphere is terrible and the staff is rude. I've been treated with disdain for asking for my free drink (a drip coffee) with my beans that I have to pour myself multiple times. What have I ever done to be treated so disrespectfully? I'll never know because I'm never going back to this location or any of the others. If the 16 other places to get good coffee close AND the 2 nearby 7-11s AND the Dunkin Donuts close I would still not go. The whole staff is arrogant clown shoes. I love coffee. Plain and simple. I drink unhealthy amounts of the stuff and Big Shoulders is, without question, my favorite place to get it. I pride myself on being able to make a good cup of coffee but the baristas at Big Shoulders are particularly talented. The rotating selections of new roasts keep the experience fresh every time and their dedication to always growing their menu (They just added breakfast sandwiches) means I'll be coming here for a while. Came here because it looked interesting and was excited that had nitro. Found that they also had white nitro (espresso + cream)! I only got the nitro black though, and then my friend, wife, and I sat down to enjoy our spoils. The nitro black was really delicious, with light sour notes and no bitterness at all. It came in a beer glass too, so it was quite nice to watch the foam starting to transition back into coffee and separate. As far as the ambience, one of the doors still seemed to be in the middle of being installed, but the rest of the interior was finished and it gave out modern, cool vibe that made it feel very hipster. There were quite a few outlets too, so I could easily see myself spending some time on my computer there, writing my "next great novel." Overall, this is a pretty great place. The coffee was always good but the staff wasn't really friendly at all. I'm not a coffee connoisseur by any means so sometimes I stopped by I had questions and they just seemed annoyed by them. For example, one time I asked what kind of donuts they had because the usual signs were missing and the guy behind the counter just replied "Whatever you see there." Do I look stupid? Like I can't read? I had to tell him there were no signs and after realizing I was correct, he just lazily explained them to me. This was just one of a handful of times. Luckily, I don't work near there anymore so I don't have to subject myself to such condescending treatment for a decent cup of coffee. read more

Decided to come here to support local instead of hitting one of the usual chains. I was helped almost immediately after walking in around 8:15 on a Tuesday morning. They have a good selection of coffees and flavorings. The Americano was much better than what you can get elsewhere. I enjoyed my nitro cold brew from here. This location is next to the Linea rental apartments and on the smaller (cozy) side. The seating is somewhat spartan--think more counter style and fewer tables and cushy chairs. I do wish the iced coffees are offered in multiple sizes as my caffeine craving is not one size fits all. My friend ordered a latte and I observed that the foam looked positively Instagrammable. Overall this is a worthy spot to add to the rotation of coffee places in the Loop. read more

This place is fantastic. The guys who work here are always friendly and efficient. The menu (and baristas) encourage pour-overs over regular drip, and with the slow-bar setup they have, I can see why. Every drink I've had here (a pour-over, a nitro, and an espresso so far) has been perfectly made with notably good mouth-feel and low acidity. The whole beans I've bought and made at home have proved to be similar (which makes sense...) and have resulted in many a great pour-over or aeropress at home. They also use the Perka system for rewards, so you can do it all via text. I've already received a free drink and I've gotten at least one of the other drinks for free with purchase of a bag of coffee. Some decor notes: long and narrow with a huge Chicago mural on the wall. The long wooden bar table looks beautiful and the decor in general has a very hip-Chicago feel. You could definitely bring your laptop and get some work done, or just stop in for a drink for a few minutes. I highly recommend grabbing a drink at Big Shoulders. read more

The pour over coffee was good, the donuts they ship in are great. The ambiance is trendy, if not cozy. The star I knocked off was because it seemed as though the owner/manager was training someone to work register/pastries/pour over, but instead of pitching in to help when it was getting busy (and 830am on a Tuesday morning gets busy), she was just watching her employees to see how they were working. This meant my pour over took 3x as long as it needed, since it just sat there while the overworked cashier tried to do the job of 3 people. What a great find. I was in town for a show and wanted to find a coffee place in the morning before leaving town and this was close to my hotel. It was perfect. It was my first time at the coffee shop and I have been looking forward to trying a new coffee shop so close to work after reading all of the raving reviews. The staff was ok. Friendly but when I asked more about their coffee they were quick to answer and not very elaborate in their response. The coffee selections were very limited. I'm usually a a dark roast drinker and they only had light and medium. I decided to go with the medium roast and was a little disappointed that it was watered down. Not the best coffee I've had, I wasn't impressed at all. I guess I will have to continue to search for a better coffee shop in the area. read more
