This is a standard, common-or-garden, $20-a-month gym. There are 1000's of them scattered throughout the US and this one is no different. The staff are always nice and welcoming. The gym floor itself is kept very clean. The place is small and busy, but I have been able to find machines/weights I need. Just like every other gym, machines break. They are fixed - eventually. The changing rooms appear clean. I've never used the showers Really, there is nothing fancy or unusual about this gym. It's fine for a workout. The only downside I see is that after 2pm on a weekday the place turns into an after-school social club where llama-headed schoolboys congregate around machines and cackle like hens! The equipment in the gym is old and archaic. The space is small and cramped. It serves as an afterschool hangout for teenage dudes. I get depressed every time I step foot in this dark, compartmentalized space. At every turn something needs to be fixed. I drive 20 minutes out of my way to go somewhere else to get a workout. I've gone just for cardio on the treadmills but they also offer a variety of classes and personal training if it's in your budget and right for you. I've been to a lot of gyms in the area and this is by far the best. The membership cost is extremely reasonable (and the contract is easy to break if needed), it's always clean (they are taking all the necessary precautions during the pandemic), the locker rooms were recently remodeled, the staff are very friendly and informative, management is thoroughly competent (not something that can be said about many fitness centers) and the class instructors and trainers are the best around. The shakes are delicious too (if a bit pricey). I've been here for four years and love it! read more

I've belonged to the Simsbury location for about three years. On two separate occasions I've spoken to management telling them that the showers in the mens' room are not being cleaned at night. The reason I know this is because I am a 5:00 a.m. client and many times, including today, I am the first one to use a shower stall, and there are clumps of hair on the floor of the shower. In fact, one particularly large and disgusting clump of hair resided on the floor of one shower stall for over a week, including after I complained about it. Today was the same, it was clear the showers were not cleaned at night. The solution would be so simple, tell the cleaners to do it, then send a staff person in the morning to do a quick walk-through and check to see if it was done. But apparently this is not on their radar screen. read more

Hey, you can lift weights or destroy your eyes watching tv while running or biking. The trainers suck, don't care if you lose weight or exercise proper technique, and the atmosphere is whisper quiet. Normally I wouldn't care because if I do cardio I just turn off the tv, pop on music and go, but the last time I was here was particularly annoying. 1. I like to workout hard. I don't grunt or scream, but I utilize the equipment they lay out. They put out battle ropes, so I used them. They put out med balls, so I used them. 2. I had 2 trainers and 3 members come up to me during my workout to tell me to be quiet and stop making noise. When you're a gym, specifically one that offers equipment that in order to use properly requires you throwing or moving it violently, you should NEVER complain when you see a client working hard and using it properly. 3. The trainers, before and after complaining to me, went back to teaching their clients how to do exercises with improper form, their clients didn't sweat the entire workout, and the trainer wasn't even watching them 3/4 of the time! I'm not sure how you're supposed to do business as a gym, but I believe you should make sure if someone's paying you $400+ a month to get them in shape; you make them work hard and pay FULL attention to them so they don't hurt themselves. It's unfortunate that I, as a member, know more than these jerks. And, while some may call me a jerk for making noise, remember that I was working hard. If these members were actually working out and the trainers actually training, there wouldn't be these problems. Maybe they should go back to watching tv as they walk. read more

We tried to end our membership after the required year, and they make it extremely difficult to terminate. They hand it off to a finance company that harasses you. They then are slow to provide information to resolve the issue. Even though you are leaving they try and get you to pay another annual maintenance fee. read more

I've been a member of the Simsbury Big Sky for two years, and I absolutely love it. I've been working with Dan Lee, a personal trainer there, and have lost 62 pounds! What I love most about this particular gym/Big Sky branch is that it is not too close to any college or universities, so you don't get the big meat heads grunting & yelling & throwing weights around or the sorority girls on the ellipticals with makeup on, hardly working out because they are about 80 pounds anyway. At this branch, people are real. It's high schoolers training for sports, moms & dads getting in shape, a couple of serious regulars...and everyone is supportive. No one is judgemental or there to "show off". People are just there to work out, and that's that--exactly what a gym should be. There is a wide variety and large number of machines, although when the 9 to 5ers get there it gets rather crowded. I haven't done any of the classes, but coworkers of mine have, and they loved them! They have a full smoothie/shake bar, supplements, and protein bars for sale. The locker rooms are really nice, and I actually don't mind showering there because they clearly keep up maintenance and cleaning. They also have a tanning bed and child care. Overall, a great gym with a GREAT staff, and great community of people looking to get in shape & stay in shape! read more

I have belonged to this gym for 20 years but now I think its about time I go else where. The gym is dirty and most of the equipment are broken. Last time I went I had to go to 5 different machines before I found one that had a TV that was working. Even when you inform the staff of a broken machine it takes 2-4 months for them to even fix it then a week later its broken again. They need to replace most of the machines. The other day I found a note on one of the machines that its so old that they are no longer making parts for it. Also canceling the membership is a bit of a pain. Even when you have a one year membership they will continue to bill you till you give written notice and it takes 2 months after that. I stayed because the staff is really nice. read more

Warning: Big Sky fitness is an unethical business. After paying them for several years, I attempted to cancel my membership. I called to cancel and they said I needed to contact a third party. When I contacted their third party they said I needed to contact Big Sky. Then Big Sky said I needed to email their third party. I did all that, didn't use my membership at all - and just found out they are still billing my credit card for the last 2 years. After calling them again and providing proof of my written cancelation, they said I didn't word the email exactly correct and refused to refund their fees even thought I didn't use their services and clearly intended to cancel my membership. read more

I have been a member for over four years and it's it by far the best gym that I have ever been to. The staff is welcoming and helpful, the instructors are awesome and the members are very friendly. I am currently working with a trainer, Susan Allen in group training. I have been doing this program for one year and have lost body fat, inches and unwanted pounds! I also take classes all week long and love them all. I mostly attend the morning classes, but have also taken the evening classes as well. I also love the variety of equipment and the layout of the gym. The locker rooms are clean and spacious and it it my home away from home! read more

I do NOT recommended to anyone simply because I have been trying to cancel my membership for over 3 months and they make it next to impossible to do so. I have gone through the entire frustrating process and yet I'm still being charged when I have not attended this gym in over 3 months they just keep taking your money! You pay for what you get. They make giving them $ very easy: forgot your towel to shower? add it to your no pockets account. Want someone to watch your kid? want a group class or trainer*? Add an extra couple hundred $ to your already $35/month plan, oh but, "your plan could cost less", just sign another 2 year contract ... what if you travel for business? they won't freeze your payments ... Sorry , I don't doubt that Big Sky has qualified staff but, I've been to gyms that are free or $10/month that offer higher quality equipment, personal training, nutrition and no contracts. The personal training is not worth the $. I paid the extra $175/month just to find out that the newer trainer was providing tryout sessions for free. I was paired with older ladies that did not have the same workout caliber as me and I ended up gaining 5 lbs and not learning a thing. Granted, I only did this for 12 weeks and I could have been more diligent, but, I've had better learning and workout experiences for far less $$$. I joined this gym last month. Very clean gym. Friendly staff. I don't have kids so I don't know how the child care is, but it is available. It's open late(ish) which is nice for when I stay late at work and can still make it over. What I do really love is the TVs in the cardio equipment and the WiFi. Listening to music doesn't eat my data now and the TVs make the cardio bearable. It could use a more organized weight area in the squat section. My first impression was that I had to walk around and find weights to use. First world problem I guess. read more

I've been a member for over a decade and have been happy, although gym is pricey. Lately however, the gym is crowded and dirty. Floors are a mess, locker floors are covered in mud. I've mentioned this to mgmt and they have done nothing. Makes me wonder when the last time was they cleaned the showers. Can't recommend Simsbury Big Sky. Go to Health trax in Avon. read more

Big Sky makes going to the gym a great experience. The Staff is welcoming, friendly, and knowledgeable. I work with Dan Lee, who has patiently taken me from sedentary, to re-introduction to physical activity, to pure enjoyment of working out. I am losing weight at a safe and steady rate, my blood work has improved immensely, and I have lost inches from my body. The atmosphere is upbeat, cost affordable, and always clean. The staff immediately addresses concerns, and there is no additional costs for the weekly classes that are offered. There are no surprises at Big Sky.... it is consistently top notch!! And at the end of a session, the smoothies are great, with complete descriptions of content and nutrition..... I don't like gyms, but I love Big Sky. read more

Someone needs to turn on the heat before and during yoga and Pilates classes. Have asked front desk numerous times and filled out comment cards and management doesn't care. It's at least 40-50 degrees!! Someone will be injured or already has been. Get it together before I will re sign in May to continue to be a member. The instructors are outstanding. So I cancelled my membership in December because I moved back home to California. Then a couple months later I kept receiving calls that I needed to make a payment for January-March. Then I called ABC Financial(Big Sky's billing source) to see what was going on. The customer service lady tells me that Big Sky reinstated my membership because I was "coming in to the gym" but I live in California? All this time I thought ABC Financial was the problem but in reality it was the scumbags at Big Sky who tried to take my money thinking I wouldn't check my bank statements. These low lifes who own probably the worst gym company on the east coast try to steal your money from you. Do not trust these dirtbags and their terrible gyms. read more
