Above all else, we look forward to coming there every year, and we are thankful for the employees/owners who help run and operate such a wonderful place. It's a place that's been around for many, many years, and the experiences you enjoy are proof as to why it's still here. Many reviews claim it's dangerous, that the employees don't give proper instruction, or that there is too much nature....in nature. To that, I would say this is not some lazy river in the dells. This is out in the wilderness, and you are warned of the dangers and sign a waiver before being allowed to raft. Do not come here expecting someone to hold your hand and guide you through every paddle you take. You are one your own after they drop you off ( you are, however, picked up at the end) . If you have cell service, they have an emergency number to contact them....but if you dont have cell service its not their fault, blame your phone company. Though you are given instructions on which sides of the river are better to take depending on the start and finish( and a map...which is prerty straigh forward...stay to the left/center until you past the first rapid to avoid the strong current of the streams on the right. After that, stick to the center until you come to the bridge at the end where you stay to the right before going over the last rapid.) You are also given a helmet and a life vest that they make sure fit you well before you are sent out. As well they tell you what to do and how to sit in the raft when going over rapids, or if by chance you fall out. Though advice does not prevent you from accidents or injury, you also can not blame the staff/owner on what mother nature herself has built and constructed and that you are fully willing to venture down. On that note, if you are camping there or just rafting, you are in the wilderness, not in some resort! There will be bugs, but this also means that there will be plenty of wildlife to be seen as well. If bugs are the worst of your worries, this place is not for you! We go there knowing there are risks involved, but then again, what good things in life don't have risks? Also, no one has ever forced us to go. We happily go each year and look forward to it. We aren't some super experienced white water rafting people, we only go once a year here. I will say if the water is low that you'll have to work a little harder to get past some rocks, and if it's high that going over the rapids may seem scarier, but you are provided a helmet and life jacket for a reason. We pay attention to the water and work together to navigate over the rapids as best we can (again just amateurs) , and we've never had anything more than a little bruise here or there. Everyone is different, though, and can do things differently from how we do. But you can not blame the business for your own actions on the river or any injuries when you are fully warned and again...sign a waiver knowing full well of the possible dangers on your trip. Too many people write reviews telling of bad experiences that sound more like someone who doesn't know what the true outdoors are like and wasn't prepared to rough it a little. Overall, this place is amazing, the campsite is well maintained and cozy, and the rafting brings adventure and many fun memories for those willing to take on the task. This place is one of a kind and will give you moments of a lifetime. But again, don't come if you're not willing to deal with the outdoors, paddling, or if you're looking for some wisconsin dells Waterpark resort. The view was definitely worth the trip! Directions from the previous review are spot on. After you…read moreturn on Knowles Creek Rd from CTH F follow that until you see the lake on your right. Immediately after the lake you will see a little driveway on your left that leads to a campsite. After that you are looking for the 3rd road on the left(road number 2781. It is marked with a small vertical wooden sign that is somewhat hidden by weeds but pretty easy to spot). I'm not sure the exact distance, but it was a few minute drive past the campsite till you reach the 3rd road on the left. Take a left on road 2781 and follow it until you come to a fork in the road where road number 2349B splits off to the right(there is a large mud hole at the start of this trail). At this point you will need to abandon your vehicle and begin hiking. Hike down the road 2349B until you come to another fork in the roadway. When you reach this fork take the trail that goes up hill (this trail goes off to the left and has a few broken off trees at the start of it). From there its a short hike up hill until you reach one of the most beautiful views in the northwoods! The total hike round trip is right around 2 miles. Shoes that can get muddy and bug spray are also definitely a must for this hike! I made the driving portion of this trip in my all wheel drive BMW X1. It made the trip ok, however driving down road 2781 was a bit of a nail biter as there are some bigger stones in the roadway and a few larger mud holes that a 2 wheel drive vehicle may not have made it through. That being said road 2781 is definitely definitely more of an offload trail with 2 tire tracks that you drive on and no place to turn around until you get to the fork for road 2349B. I would recommend a 4 wheel drive truck or suv for this journey, or just parking on the side of Knowles Creek Rd and hiking from there. Doing this would only about another mile to the hike. Also you may be able to drive down road 2349B if you have a Wrangler or similar vehicle. I also recommend stopping at the lake you pass on Knowles Creek Rd and getting some beautiful pictures! There is a small campsite that you can turn off into if it isn't occupied and spend a little time taking in the beauty of the lake.

YES. After many hours of searching to no end...on multiple days...we have finally discovered this…read moreproudly hidden gem, so titled The Big Rock. Hopefully this review will lead you right to the site and save you all the hours of endless exploration, but this is mostly serving as a note-to-self...to help me find this place in the future :-) Soooo starting from downtown Lakewood, WI: Head north on F until you hit Knowles Creek Rd, turn left. Continue on Knowles Creek until there comes a fork in the road. At the fork, follow Knowles Creek to the left and do NOT continue straight/right-ish onto McCaslin Tower Rd. Continue on Knowles Creek, where you should see a sort of lake on the right and then a campsite further down on the left. After these two "markers", look for the 2nd trail on the left with one of those mini-snowmobile stop signs. The correct trail should be numbered 2781. Follow this trail (in the car is still fine, but watch for huge puddles/deep mud) until you can literally drive no further. You should then see a sort of pathway at the end on the left that is somewhat upward sloping at first. At this point, abandon your vehicle and begin walking up the clearing (there is typically a puddle or mud of some sort at the start of this path). Walk for a bit (1/2 mile?) and keep your eyes out for an uphill path on the left side of where you are walking (in my experience, there has been a partially fallen tree trunk marking the base of this hill). Follow the path up this hillside to the top, at which point, you have reached The Big Rock! The total walking time is minimal and, round-trip, clocks in at around 2 miles. You'll know when you've reached your destination because the view is breathtaking! Now supposedly, this is a geocaching site (I have included the URL in my creation of this business listing), so there are instructions and coordinates on how to reach the place on that as well. In my two trips to The Big Rock, I have yet to discover where the cache is located...we searched for quite a while on both occasions and were unable to find the box. So good luck to all future enthusiasts with that endeavor; as for me, I'll be lounging on that huge rock over there enjoying the view :)

Bear Paw Outdoor Adventure is a gem you must try.. you will go back…read more. If you are interested in camping or staying in a nice cabin, this place is for YOU! It has everything from hiking, mountain biking, kayaking, rafting, ATVs, you name it... The campgrounds are set up for small/individual groups to larger groups. Volleyball, hammocks a basketball hoop and other fun things are all around. The cabins are very clean and nice, AC/heat, private bathrooms and showers with nice hot water. Comfortable beds and linens. Then there is the awesome bar and restaurant. Order the Pizza or flatbread, it is excellent, and being from Chicago we know pizza! Eric is a fantastic cook and anything on the menu will taste great. The bar offers all sorts of beers and any other drink you want. Eric and Tom run this place, they know the area well and Eric is an expert on just about anything outdoors. Very friendly place and people. The mountain biking is awesome and if you are a mountain biker you MUST make this trip. The trails in the Nicolet National Forest are some of the best in the Midwest. Beautiful, single track, a bit technical in places, boulders, and the scenery is always beautiful. You may even see a black bear. Trails are well marked in the Nicolet. Rafting the Wolf River is exciting too, or you can kayak it as many kayakers come from all over the Midwest to kayak here. We are rafters, we love it, usually see a bald eagle or 2, lots of turtles, and just a great time. We like to go to Herb's Rafting which works out of Crab and Jacks, a bar/restaurant where a lot of motorcycle riders stop. It is always fun around Memorial Day when there are tons of kids camping at Bear Paw and then rafting the river. They get out at Crab and Jacks where there are numerous Harley Davidsons and riders watching all of this. Quite the different groups of people doing what they enjoy. Thanks to Eric for being such a great guy and Tom with some stories....oh boy, get Tom to tell you some stories... he loves that .... Park offerings include camping for trailers and tents with electric & water hookup available. A large playground and sand beach area. A large paved boat launch with ample trailer parking. They provide overnight dock rental, rental pontoon boat and other water toys. There is a very reasonably priced retail store for those forgotten supplies. The park also has a snack shack offering fast food and different ice cream treats. The park has a nicely remodeled room and patio available for rental for receptions & gatherings. Shawano County Park has something for everyone from activities to just relaxing in a swing and watching the lake waves splash ashore. A true forget your troubles park. Located right on Lake Dr with many entertainment venues in each direction.

A charming golf course in the Northwoods! This is a popular course and we were lucky to get a last…read moreminute tee-time from a cancellation for 18 on Saturday morning. It was already busy at 6am! I would definitely recommend scheduling a tee time in advance, especially if you have a group. The course is in great shape and I especially loved the back nine with the flowers and a few holes along the brook. After playing, you can get a half priced drink at the bar with your receipt. The Bloody Mary was delicious, made spicy and garnished with a seasoned pickle, and the bartender was kind and friendly.
