From the moment we walked in everyone was so polite and greeted us with a smile. The waiter was polite and attentive. There are a lot of choices on the menu and if you're not in the mood for breakfast you can even order lunch all day long. I had the 2 fried eggs with country fried steak, I ordered my eggs over easy and I was very impressed by the wonderful job the chef did with cooking my eggs, they were perfect! I loved how clean everything including the ladies room was, I went in and they had paper products stocked and soap. I will DEFINITELY be back and would DEFINITELY recommend this place to everyone I know. read more

Summary: A blue collar greasy spoon with a great value. Family went here for lunch on Friday. Menu prices look like they were from 1970 - everything was extremely cheap (except the drinks at $3.25). Food was decent, hamburgers were a little small but for the price ($2.35) you can just get two. I sampled the stew (pretty good) and chili (not a fan, no beans and was definitely hot dog chili). Hot dogs were good. French fries were good but had no salt. The serving staff were all very friendly and cheerful, one of the waiters gave our kids a lollipop. Even when I thought I was charged too much, the staff was very patient and kind (it was my error). Decor is a little tired and the seats could be resprung, but this isn't a place you go to for the experience - you come for cheap food. I'd return again and check out breakfast. read more

Very average experience, overall. Tried this place recently for the first time. Understood it's one of the older restaurants in town. Figured it probably has a loyal following. Tried them out for breakfast. Went in and fairly promptly got service. The service was...very flat. The server acted like it was a chore to take care of me, and like they'd rather be doing almost anything else. Not a great note to start on. I saw in other reviews how much people bragged on the quality of service, but it was missing that morning. On to the quality of the food. Very average fare, nothing very flavorful or tasty. The coffee was stale. Overall, just not a great dining experience here. When I checked out at the end at the front, the final total was reasonably cheap. Best thing I can really say about this place. Not in any hurry to return. There have to be better breakfast options in this area! Go here if you're really bored and not picky. Otherwise you'll probably be disappointed as well. read more

Big Spring Cafe is probably the best hometown-feel restaurant in all of Huntsville. Even if it's been weeks since our last visit, the waiter remembers exactly what we order...he's that good! We love this place. It's simple, it's delicious, and the chicken fried steak is hands down the best you'll find anywhere. I can't say enough good things about it. We don't get to go as often as we'd like because of busy work schedules, but when we do, we absolutely tear it up! My only wish is that they were open on weekends so we could go more often. read more

I can see why people like Big Spring Cafe, but... for me it's a little underwhelming. My wife and in-laws were singing the praises of their slider style burgers for sometime before I was able to give them a try. It's a small parking lot, but the inside seats quite a few at either booth/table or high top near the grill- so don't let the busy lot turn you away. We're a family of four (two young kids) and we had 8 total burgers and three fries with some drinks, and our total pre-tip was $42. The burgers are in the ballpark of White Castle or Krystal's. Your basic slider comes with mustard and onions, but they have chili, cheese, lettuce, and tomato as optional toppings. They hang their hat on having greasy burgers- it's an honest brag but nothing crazy. Everything is served on parchment paper to match their simple, no frills style. I'd be back to try breakfast some day, but lunch might be awhile. read more

I would highly recommend you get to Big Spring Cafe early! During lunch hours they were slammed, however despite this, their service was great. They were constantly checking and following up with us when a table became available. The restaurant was very clean and reminds you of an updated, homey cafe. We ordered burgers and onion rings. The food was delicious and served fresh and hot. Mind you, they don't have plates so they serve your food on what appears to be parchment paper. Also, the burgers are somewhat on the smaller side but well worth the wait. Definitely next time we will come early so we can try their breakfast menu. All in all, great food and service so will definitely come back to visit. read more

Ate here for breakfast on a Friday morning. The place was decorated "old fashioned" but with new furniture, so it was really nice. The food was amazing. They cooked a perfect bologna omelet. And it was so good, stuffed full of bologna and cheese. The smoked sausage had a nice Smokey taste and was delicious. The scrambled eggs were also cooked amazing, very fluffy. The country fried steak with gravy was good and well seasoned. The biscuits and gravy were good. The biscuits just fell apart and were very soft. The bacon, well the bacon was cold. I'm sure it's precooked and sits in a pan. But it was good. Our waitress was very nice. She came right over to us after we sat. Got our drinks fast. The only issue was she never came back to the table until she brought the check. I wanted some hot sauce for the eggs but she never came back. All in all I'll definitely be going back. My wife and I went to the old location across the street and sat and waited for about 10 mins while a shrew of a woman server was intimately engaged in a nonsense conversation with an older man... We walked out and swore we would never return... 14 years later I went in for lunch and was amazed. I was immediately served by a young man named Allen who made the experience worth waiting. I sat at the grill and was able to talk to the grill lady, Theresa, and she was super friendly and engaging. Now to the meal. I had the hamburger steak and it was OK. I say OK because it did not seem to have any seasoning on it and tasted bland...? The fries where on point, the salad was crisp and the ice tea, tasted like ice tea. Facility looked clean, and all servers, cooks, etc... wore masks. I'll probably go back and give it another shot. read more

Stopped by here to try a burger when the Rocket City Burger Battle at Campus 805 proved too crowded for our speed. I believe Big Spring Cafe is the oldest continuously operating restaurant in Huntsville. They moved into a new building (the current one) a few years ago. My dining companions got cheeseburgers, fries, and onion rings. I'm super, super picky about my burgers so I went the safer route and got a chicken tender plate (though a little voice in my head told me I shouldn't, and that the burgers would be better). Well, I should've listened to it. While there was nothing super bad about the tender meal, it was just..meh. One GREAT thing about this restaurant is that it's pretty dang cheap...with one notable exception. You can get a cheeseburger, fries or onion rings, and a soda for around $7.50. However, the tender plate was a touch over 10 bucks. It didn't include a drink, but it did include fries, a side salad, and a roll. That sounds like a decent deal but when you look at what you get...I dunno. The side salad was served in a small bowl and consisted of nothing but super finely shredded lettuce and chunked tomatoes. It mostly tasted watery. And the "roll" was legitimately just a hamburger bun. The fry portion was the same my other dining companions got. And I got maybe 4 small chicken tenders. It's not a terrible deal, per se, but compared to the rest of the menu, it seemed a little high. Anyway. Like I said, the salad and roll were disappointing. The fries and tenders were both decent but I'm pretty dang sure they were frozen and then fried. Low on flavor, low on crispiness. Just really forgettable. On the bright side: the restaurant was really clean (100 health rating, too) and the service was friendly and nice. Also, we really enjoyed the onion rings, and the burgers were pretty dang solid. Yes, they're pretty small -- I'd recommend getting a double if you're hungry -- but they were juicy, cooked nicely, and the buns were warm and toasty. And, I feel, priced very reasonably. Bottom line: come for the hamburgers and onion rings if you're down for that. Absolutely skip the chicken tender plate; it's not worth it for what you get. I have other places I prefer for hamburgers, but I'd consider returning if I was in the neighborhood. It's definitely worth a shot to experience a slice of Huntsville history! read more

Wow! This place was hopping. We got there around 11:30 A.M. The parking lot was packed and so was the diner. My hubby and I had hamburgers and onion rings, and our grandson had a cheese hot dog with French fries. If our hamburger bun had been toasted, it would have been better. As it was it had the best hamburger patty that I've had in a while. The onion rings were of the frozen variety. The hot dog wiener was real pale and our grandson thought it tasted a little weird...but he ate it all. The food Is served paper that is usually in baskets. John was our server, and he was great. Restaurant was really clean, the BLT was good. The cheeseburger was greasy, as they are known for, but was really disappointing. It fell apart & not because it was juicy but probably because of the fat. The flavor was lacking & the patty smaller than the bun. The fries were pre-frozen so pretty standard. Visiting the area and was looking for something quick. I was actually cutting through the parking lot to turn around and saw cars piling in. I sat at the counter and asked a staff member what I should order as it was my first time. He said cheeseburger, chili cheese dog with mustard and onion, and fries. As I waited I looked behind the Waffle House- esque counter with the full view of the prep areas and grill. A woman was forming the burgers from a tub of ground beef and throwing them on the grill. The Food came quickly on what appeared to be waxed paper. Fries were very fresh and there is even a cayenne pepper shaker for extra pop. The chili dog was solid. The cheeseburger was smaller than the bun but thick and tasty, and was the star of the show. Really good little spot that I will definitely come back to when visiting. read more

Cool little burger/hot dog joint in Huntsville. I saw they had been around for a long time so I figured it would be a good place to check out while in the area. They are in a new building not far from the old location with more space. Be sure to make sure you're going to the new one if you plug it in GPS! Had a cheeseburger and fries and it was good. I've had better cheeseburgers but for a small joint not bad at all! Very juicy and good flavor. The fries were warm and tasted just as fries would. The service was very good and attentive. Staff came around a few times to make sure I had everything I needed and food was served within 5-10 minutes. If you like smaller burger joints with a local feel, check it out! read more

Big Spring Cafe is going to transport you back to the 50s, and I totally dig it. The staff were all really nice and we made good conversation with our host. Our group ordered various different items so I'll just get through them quickly. Chilli dog - the hot dog wasn't grilled, which isn't a sin, I guess, but didn't do much for the taste. Hamburgers - tasted like burgers :) Simple, clean, and yummy. Chilli - all meat, which is excellent, but salty, which was sad. They do give you crackers but that didn't help cut enough of the saltiness. Pricing - the prices are super low but do keep in mind that the individual burgers are slider sized, so to get full you'd have to probably order two of the items. Even then, pricing is pretty good. Would go again if craving the atmosphere and a good burger. Will stick with just the burgers, though. read more

I stopped in here because it was the only restaurant I could think of on my way to my destination and I was starving. I'm not a huge fan of their hamburgers but figured there had to be something on the menu I would like. Then I spied the bologna sandwich! Oh, just the thought of a bologna sandwich sends me back to my days in college when I would help my husband's family sell at the flea market on Meridian Street (circa 1985). There was a Huddle House (??) right across the street and they had the best bologna sandwiches. This sandwich didn't disappoint. The bologna was fried (of course) on toasted white bread with mayo. I wish I had order it with lettuce but that was my bad. There was a "dressed" option with probably included lettuce. Their fries are good, and everything is basically cooked to order. This trip I sat at the counter and had a very nice conversation with another customer. I will definitely put this restaurant on my to go list for the bologna sandwich alone. read more

A throwback diner established in 1922 but obviously in a newer building but the food was probably this good back in 1922 which is why they have been around for so long. The last time I had a burger from this Cafe was over 15 years ago, so while home visiting me and my wife decided to stop in the new location to treat our kids to the deliciousness of the famous 'greasy little burger' that we knew from the past. The new location is nice, but I would have loved to show them the place my grandparents took us to growing up. The staff awesome and the order looked just like it did growing up as it sizzled on the grill. Grease soaking the wrappers and bag. I was so excited to take that first bit of the burger and what a disappointment, very bland/a mouthful of grease and the burger fell apart because of the poor meat quality. A little salt, black pepper and more mustard helped a little. Then on to the chili dog, OH WOW it was an extremely cheap, cheap, cheap tasting hot dog. In fact it did not taste like a hot dog and the watered dog chili did not help. I loved this place growing up and maybe my taste buds have become so refined in my travels and experiences with great hole in the wall food and finer dining that I lose my loving feeling for this place. No, that's not it because there are plenty of old school spots from the past they we visited and the food was still on point. I think that this place is still a jewel but whomever is running it needs to turn back to the history that made locals and visitors alike love the food. The prices are high for what you get and you can surely get better tasting options just down the road; however, this place is ICONIC and should return to the historic recipes, love and quality that made you great and profitability is sure to follow.
