I don't know how I've managed to never eat here, but better half thought this was a travesty so when we were starving on a Friday night, Stanlieo's it was. I was beginning to worry he would never return with our food (we did takeout), but apparently they were understaffed (a common issue now) and only had two folks working. No matter, the food hit the spot. Better half always gets the kitchen sink and inhaled it before I could snag a bite. It looked great, though. The onion rings were still piping hot even after the ride home, and they tasted great. I was wanting a meatball sub, and oh what a meatball sub I got. I wish better half hadn't had the relish included (not their fault), but that was an easy scrape off. Note: the relish is great, it just didn't belong on this particular sandwich. Regardless, the meatballs didn't taste old or weird, the sauce had a bit of a kick, the cheese was nicely melted, and the bread--while a little soft, I prefer crustier--didn't get super soggy. Prices were on point for what you got (HUGE portion sizes) and I was happy. I'd definitely go again. read more

I have a great sense of nostalgia for Stanlieo's! Growing up, my brother worked at the store around the corner from us on Jordan Lane. I recall Mr. Glenn Watson, who founded Stanlieo's in 1971, served 12 years on Huntsville's City Council. I also recall the unique [back then] vegetarian offerings at Stanlieo's such as the "Oakwood Special" with 3 slices each of 3 types of cheese (Swiss, American, and provolone). They still offer plenty of vegetarian eats! My go to Stanlieo's sub has always been the Kitchen Sink and I like it heated. This is exactly what I enjoyed the last time I dropped in to this Stanlieo's store! It was as good as I recall it tasting back in the mid-70s and beyond. We used to have our monthly Porsche Club meetings at the Stanlieo's on Jordan Lane. The dining in experience is definitely no frills; however, I think that's a part of its charm! Thank you, Mr. Glenn and Miss Connie, for keeping this iconic local restaurant thriving and providing the same quality subs my family and I grew up enjoying! I love a kitchen sink but the wait is always a bit much. I also like their fried pickles, they are spears. We ordered one sandwich with no cheese due to dietary restrictions but it came out with cheese and we had waited so long we didn't even bother to send it back. They put oregano? Or something on the hot dog and my 5 year old was not interested. Definitely call your order in ahead of time and double check your order. I don't know what part of no tomatoes the employees here don't understand but after waiting 10 minutes and giving them a more than generous tip, I get home to find out that they nearly drowned the sandwich in tomatoes. So now I've wasted $15.00 not to mention the time and gas negotiating traffic to get there and back. Won't be coming back anytime soon. Let me start off by saying I have seen this place many times and I truly regret not stopping before now. When I walked in it seemed like wow this place is old and who is she yelling at on the phone. Then I realized she was just talking and busy and working. And I didn't think nothing else about it. The man at the counter was very helpful and friendly. I ordered my food and he even told me about the specials and what days I should come on for the subs that I like. They were busy as well but he took the time to tell me. I ordered the Steak Kabob sub. It needed a little salt but that's it. It was hot and fresh. The fries was good as well. I got the combo. I will definitely go back. It's OK. Quick and reasonably priced. Sandwiches just don't have enough meat in them. They weren't bad just not very good.

Food was good, service was good, and the shop has a unique ambiance. I would recommend, although I haven't had a lot of their menu.

This is one of those kind of places that intrigues me...that is until I try it. There are two locations of Stanlieo's in Huntsville, and it appears they've both been at their current locations for decades, as the buildings are not in the best of shape on the outside. However, they do seem to keep a steady flow of customers, so it was certainly seemed worth trying. My focus is on the location at Governor's Drive. Bottom line upfront: Stanlieo's is headed into a downward power dive and had better pull up quick lest they auger into the ground. Based on the poor overall experience, it is clear they are riding the coat-tails of previous greatness. Facilities grade: F - The place is just filthy. The bathrooms are akin to a 1970's public gas station bathroom, and that's honestly being nice. If I didn't catch something in the bathroom I'll honestly be surprised. Value grade: F - We purchased two, sandwiches (which were very small), one order of onion rings (tiny portion contained in a 3x5" paper tray contained consisting of less than 6 onion rings), and two fountain drinks)...Cost: $22!! Food: I asked for mayonnaise on my sandwich and they delivered there! For I received darned near a mayonnaise sandwich! My wife asked how my steak sandwich tasted, to which I told her I wasn't sure, because all I could taste was mayonnaise! I also added mushrooms and again the ratio was way off, with bites of mouthfuls of mushrooms. The bun was flavorful, but only because it was absolutely soaked in butter, and not grilled to compensate for the massive amount of butter-soaked bread. So, Stanlieo's - Goodbye now and forever more! Best of luck to you. My advice, spend some money and get the place cleaned up and remodel your restrooms, and revamp your menu and cooks. Otherwise call it the end of an era and pull the sheets over these restaurants for good. read more

Well I went here for the first time and I loved it. The service was excellent they talked to me like a real person and went over some of the options they had. The inside I was expecting to be dirty from the reviews but come on, it was a cool little place. Maybe my expectations were low but they over delivered a bunch. The hot kitchen sink was delicious. My child loved the meatball sub. The price for Huntsville was a good deal (Huntsville is so expensive for crap food) this was good food and a decent price. I would almost say the knocked me over. This building needs to be demolished, or at least gutted and refurbished. It is an extreme turn-off to arrive at a place that serves food to be greeted by dirty glass doors, a large partition at the serving counter, outdated facilities, & employees eating and watching tv in the dining area. The grill was dirty, I watched as the employee tried to clean off piles of old burnt food simultaneously as she put new meat and toppings to prepare new orders. The workers talked about other people's personal business loudly, a young lady working the grill talked loudly over the food as she cooked. The rest rooms were deplorable. Luckily I was ordering for someone else, they offered for me to order what I wanted and they would pay. Needless to say I gladly passed on their offer. I ordered the "kitchen sink" and was delighted by the amazing flavor. It's served on what I believe to be fresh bread. I grew up in New Orleans so poboys is a well known item for me, and this sandwich has bread that's similar to those amazing poboys. My wife who dined with me swapped half of her steak and cheese for half of mine. She loved mine as well. Here's was good too but the kitchen sink is definitely where it's at. After 6 years, I decided to try this location again, and I am SO glad I did. The dining area and receiving area were very clean. My order taker, after I said I was allergic to onions, called back to the kitchen and warned them NO contact with onions. My sandwich was delivered quickly and was perfectly made. Stopped at the Governors Drive location. Had not been in years. It was Thursday so the sub special was turkey. I went with the Club sub and it was great. It didn't make it home. The bread was a big difference and was the best bread of any sub shop I know of. They do need to update their prices on their website as the sub cost about $8.50 including taxes.
