Big Springs burgers are outstanding. The Inn caters to locals, campers and Indian Lake residents. A dinner or lunch there is a 'must' for us. Patio is dog friendly.

The closest and best option nearby for fish fry was Mona & Co, according to my friend who was in our camping group and has lived in the UP for all her life. Mona & Co is such a fun set up as it is the restaurant that is located at the Indian Lake Golf Course, so your view from the restaurant is to the entire golf course and in the very distance you can see Indian Lake as well. One room of this restaurant is the dining room and the other is where the bar is with a couple of high top tables. The dining room looked pretty full, so we sat at the high tops near the bar and informed the hostess that we were going to be sitting there but wanting to both eat and drink, which they said was fine. Overall, the food was yummy - I was glad to have been able to experience a traditional UP fish fry. The ambiance of this place was very odd though. It's very casual, very unique characters coming here to dine, and because of that blend of golfers and people just coming to dine, it was just an interesting mix all around. The service was very slow given that they had a full house, but basically one person running around taking all the orders and running to and from the bar to grab drink orders as well. It took quite a while (over half an hour) after we sat down before we could even place our food order and then quite a bit longer as we waited for food. The bar we could walk up to ourselves and get a drink, so didn't need to wait on that. We were able to do plenty of people watching though and that's why I have a ton of observations of the people who came through these rooms. The bartenders were very friendly and very young. Some drink orders that came in they would need to ask older customers about how to make as they were also a little bit clueless - e.g. someone ordered a drink "straight up" and they weren't sure if that meant with or without ice and gave them their drink with a side of ice just in case! Overall, we weren't in any rush and I was starving by the time the food came, so happily ate it all and were on our way back to the campground for our camping weekend!

We didn't have any plans for dinner so my companion started looking for acceptable options on his iPhone. "How about this one," he said. "The 'Fresh Water Tavern' in Gladstone. Gladstone is just a few miles away." Having been to the Terrace Bay Hotel recently I said, "Actually, it's just down the hallway." "Really!" He replied. "Yep, it's the restaurant and bar right here in the hotel," I said. "Let's go!" He replied. And so we walked from our room to the bar. Once seated at the bar we ordered drinks. I went for a dry martini with one of my favorite gins -- which was properly mixed and chilled. Since we were in need of dinner too, we checked out the menu. Lots of good options. I decided to try the whitefish sandwich. It was excellent. A nice filet on a decent roll with the right amount of sauce and crunchy veggies. I'd definitely eat it again. Generic but decent fries along side of the sandwich made for a nice meal after our first day on the road. I didn't expect to find five star food in Gladstone, but tasty three star food with a properly mixed cocktail at the hotel restaurant/bar after a long drive is actually worthy of four -- so kudos to the Freshwater Tavern!
