City Museum - Perched above the city

Hands down my favorite "museum" in St. Louis…read more Honestly, calling it a museum almost feels misleading. It's more like an analog amusement park built from reclaimed pieces of the city. Old bridges, industrial equipment, architectural salvage, stained glass, pipes, castles, tunnels, and all kinds of odds and ends have been transformed into one giant playground. Everywhere you look there's something to climb through, crawl under, or slide down. The best part? The slides. There are giant multi-story slides scattered throughout the museum, and every single one made me feel like a kid again. My knees may have been questioning my life choices after climbing through all the tunnels and staircases, but it was 100% worth it. Half the fun is simply wandering around and accidentally discovering a new room or passage you completely missed the first time. This is not a place where you walk in a straight line from one exhibit to the next. You explore. You get lost. You backtrack. You find something hidden behind another room. It's impossible to see everything in one visit, and that's honestly part of the charm. A few exhibits were unfortunately closed while I was there. I spotted an underwater-themed area that I was really excited to explore, but it wasn't open that day. It just gives me another reason to come back. One of my favorite spaces was the old bank vault. It was such a cool piece of history tucked into this wonderfully chaotic place. There are also so many quirky corners that make perfect photo and TikTok spots. At times it reminded me a little of the Museum of Illusions, except instead of optical illusions, everything here is meant to be climbed on and explored. I had an absolute blast. Whether you're visiting with kids or you're just an adult who misses climbing on everything you weren't supposed to touch, this place is ridiculously fun. I'll absolutely be back the next time I'm in St. Louis.

The parents will love it for a little while until they start to panic about not being able to fit through a small opening. That didn't happen to me... Unfortunately the tram rides to the top were sold out, but we'll catch them next time. Highly recommend for a quick, educational stop! -- update -- My wife and I were in St. Louis and decided we had to do the Gateway Arch at least once. We tried getting tickets the day before and it was completely sold out, but we got lucky and snagged spots for the next morning. Totally worth the wait! The view from the top is absolutely stunning. You can see for miles across the Mississippi River and the city skyline -- it's one of those "wow" moments that makes the whole trip worthwhile. The architecture and engineering behind it are impressive too. That said, be ready for a cozy ride. The tram pods only fit about 5 people and it's very tight in there. You'll get to know your neighbors pretty well for those few minutes! If you're even a little claustrophobic or afraid of heights, this might not be for you. But if you're okay with both, it's a must-do experience. Highly recommend doing it at least once. We loved it and left with some great photos and memories. Just book your tickets in advance!

Sitting at the northeast corner of Citygarden Sculpture Park, "Kindly Geppetto" is a bronze…read moresculpture by Tom Otterness that mixes fairy tale charm with a hint of unease. The artwork shows Geppetto, the well-known carpenter from the Pinocchio story, holding a hammer above the puppet's head. At first, it might look playful or cartoon-like, but the scene feels more complicated the longer you look. Is Geppetto angry, or is he about to bring Pinocchio to life? The puppet gazes up at him with a mix of trust and worry, adding to the tension. Otterness often uses simple, familiar characters to explore deeper ideas, and this piece is no different. It makes you think about the bond between a maker and what they create - who holds the power, who gets to decide, and how care and control can overlap. It also reflects the original Pinocchio story, with its themes of honesty, identity, and the desire to become real. Completed in 2001 and placed in Citygarden by the Gateway Foundation, the sculpture stands about eight and a half feet tall. Surrounded by other modern pieces, "Kindly Geppetto" stands out for the story it tells and the emotions it stirs. [Review 1173 of 2025 - 439 in Missouri - 24726 overall]

This bronze sculpture pays tribute to the famed cartoon carpenter geppetto from Pinocchio stories and film. Ill be honest and admit when me and my family stumbled upon this sculpture in august 2018 I did not make that connection. But the sculpture was very alluring and my kids was fired up to take a photo op with the sculpture. Overall very cool medium sized sculpture in a downtown Saint Louis area full of fun and cool sculptures. Located just a short walking distance from the famed gateway arch as well.

This area…read morewas really run-down and seemed really sketchy; the roads seemed pretty destroyed and surrounding buildings were mostly obliterated or inhabited. So, I wouldn't recommend visiting at night, as you never know what you may encounter. The Grafitti wall was much more longer than I thought it would be! The vibrant colors from various artists that join together to create a complete picture was truly astounding. It's actually so inspiring to see so many different artists working together, incorporating their own unique styles to create one single piece of artwork. If I took a few minutes to really take in and admire each grafitti, finishing the wall would take HOURS! I was skeptical that this mural was worth the trip to an abandoned area, but I'm truly so glad that I came to see this beauty. If you're in Saint Louis, you have to come take a look!

This wall is repainted every year during the Paint Louis festival on Labor Day weekend and it will definitely be worth checking out!
