This review is specifically for the donut / pastry section at the East Windsor Big Y. First of all, donuts / pastries are baked fresh daily. Usually available early morning. Variety is very good. Donuts are larger than your average donut. Above and beyond that, the ones with filling (for example, Boston cream and jelly) are literally bursting with gooeyness (and goodness as well, since that's what spellcheck tried for). Last, donuts, at $1.35 each are an excellent value, and so much more reasonable that that national chain that took the word "Donuts" out of its name. Discounts for quantity, too. I enjoy all Big Y stores. East Windsor, Simsbury, Southwick. Employees are friendly. The only quirk is in Simsbury, around the holidays, they want take the bottle refund receipts in the self-service lane. If you have a $0.20 bottle refund receipts, they make you go to the customer service desk. It's the quirkiest thing ever. read more

This Bigy is close to my house so I shop there sometimes but haven't been except for prescriptions ever since I went there a few times in the same month and I like to get fresh greens there and arriving after 9am and they are not out yet they open at 7? So finally after asking for them to put them out several times I decided to talk to the store manager His very poor excuse was he has had a hard time getting a greens guy. Really I have worked produce departments it's not that difficult to get them out in less then 3 hrs!! And when I worked in the industry the store manager has to know how to work all departments and should pick up the slack. And he seemed like it was no big deal and I was bothering him because he had to come out of his office so unprofessional. What ever happened to customer service. All of the store is fine except I just called tonight to order a cheese pizza for pick up. The guy who answered sounded like I was a bother to even speak to and he did not take my name. I gave it to him and he said " what?" I said I am so and so and will pick it up. I had to ask what time it might be ready. On 2 previous occasions I have also asked two guys if one could re-cut some of the slices we can grab ourselves. It is not always cut through and easy to take. I do not want to touch slices someone else might take and also risk dragging a whole pizza off the tray and drop it. They both looked at me like I was nuts. Neither moved too fast to help either. I visited the BigY in East Windsor this week. It was the first time I've ever been into one. The store is very clean, the layout is great, and the produce looks like it just came out of the market. I like the buy 2 get one specials they had and I'm told they have more. I think this is my kind of store. I'll have to see if she'll let me take a picture the next time I'm there but BigY has a woman with a SERVICE DOG on staff. How amazing is that! I had the pleasure of speaking with her (Stephanie or Bethany, I think the former) and after some questions she explained how she ended up with BigY and how great the company was to her and her puppy partner. I told her how great she is to US! She was relatively new yet took the time to help me find the items I needed. Best customer service I've had in years. read more

UPDATE: The store manager Jim made everything right. I was refunded my pizza and given 2 new ones. The next time I went, they were perfect. They responded to my review immediately and listened to me. I would now recommend. I ordered 2 party sized pizzas for my son's 7th birthday party. I had a bad feeling when the guy who answered the phone was tentative agreeing to my pickup time. When I arrived, the pizza guy looked at me several times and made no acknowledgement of my presence. After I engaged him, he slowly made his way to him. He seemed very dour. When I got home, the pizza was barely cut. When I cut it, it was difficult to separate. One thing that did separate, was the crust. It separated from the rest of the pizza. The reason for that was it was not cooked completely. So gross. I rue the day I tried to save a buck at Big Y. I won't do it again. read more

I'm really not sure what's up with this place. It seems that lately whenever I go in, they never have what I'm looking for. (Yesterday they were out of stock of four items--and that was half my shopping list!) Whenever my boyfriend goes in there he complains about the rude service. I had never had an issue with rudeness, but i did have someone bag my bananas UNDER my canned food once. (What? Really?) I really wish they had a better selection of vegetarian/vegan/organic foods. Had a wicked hankering for a chicken tender wrap. Laura in food service cooked up some fresh tenders so they were hot and crispy and put them on a wrap with mayo, onions, American cheese, pickles, jalapeños and sriracha for a really kickin sammy for a reasonable price, three and a half bucks. read more

As a resident in the town of East Windsor I must be candid, Big Y has never been in the class of a World Class Market as they claim to be. This store barely ever has stock in their sale items, always bare spots with sale items, due to the very small spaces provided for the items that are on sale. In addition, This store in truth is expensive for what little they do offer expecting you to have either a pocket full of worthless coins earned, or a paid for card which grants you discounts that result in competitive to other stores pricing! This store often lacks even having the common groceries competitors all have available such as packaged ground turkey, fresh Cilantro, or brand named Cheese such as Land O Lakes always pushing their World Class deli bluff. Never any organic or healthier foods section. Ask customers what it's like when they are in line and you hold them up getting 5-6 rain checks each time you go to Big Y for sale items mostly out of stock no matter the day or time you go during the sale. I have been a Big Y card holder since 1997 and have only won a single Gold Coin in all the many years that I did shop there, as for in the past 3 years I have been avoiding this store, because I usually shop for a week or more at a time and they never have what I want and the sales there are a total rip off in truth. I order a lot from the grinder and pizza shops at this Big Y. The food is usually good, except for the occasional less than fully cooked pizza dough. The reason for the two stars is the service. The pizza and grinder shop staff are always stressed out, inpatient, and sometimes rude. They do not hide the fact that they are stressed, making it real awkward for the customer. When I first moved to Windsor locks I started shopping at East Windsor Bigy. East Windsor, I remember Jim and Mike the most. They Were a great help and actually talked to customers. The new managers are like night and day. They Don't talk or even acknowledge customers. Even they, give you the look when you have a problem. Last week they had a 10 people meeting near the deli while I and another lady were waiting at the bakery in plain sight for 15 minutes. Come to find out the baker had to leave early that day. Should have put a closed sign on top of the case. I used to get the flyer each week delivered at my front lawn Thursday. You have no way of knowing what the senior Tuesday special will be if you don't get it, the flyer, anymore like me. Try to get a discount coupon from a cashier tuesday is like pulling teeth. Go to service desk for one and your told to go to a cashier for one. Go to the cashier and they won't give you one. Go to the manager and ask for one and they GIVE YOU THE LOOK I loved the way the pizza looked so I finally ordered a party size cheese for me and the grand kids about 3 months ago. Jan 2019. Perfect Texture ! Except, wheres the sauce? So I decided to watch how they made the pizza. They pressed out the dough, Perfect! They put on the sauce, Perfect! Then they rubbed and rubbed and rubbed again the sauce into the Dough, Dumb Stupid! My thought was, Why don't they put sauce in when they make the dough recipe. My bf and I go in there only when there is BOGO...The Pizza dept.people are so rude. I asked for napkins one day and they woman completely ignored me and walked away. She looked more disgusted than I WAS, for me just asking. And yes, on the comments where the is such a small place for sale items, and never restock them because they only order so much. I first want to start out by saying I have been shopping at the East Windsor Big Y for over 10 years now. I usually have a good experience, and always get my produce from this store. I want to be clear I am not looking for anything free from this post, just sharing my experience. I shopped here yesterday, 01/02/2018, and was so incredibly disappointed I feel my experience warrants a negative review. The produce was disgusting. Half of the produce items on my list I was unable to purchase because everything was over-ripened and squishy (APPLES, asparagus, etc.). The produce I did purchase I sincerely regret, as I ended up throwing out half of the mushrooms I purchased due to them being old, slimy, smelly, and bad (I cook mushrooms ALL THE TIME and have never seen packages so bad). I'm not sure if this was due to not getting fresh deliveries on New Years Day, a manager not ordering frequently enough to keep produce fresh, or lazy staff that do not rotate bad product. Whatever the reason, I do not think I will return to this Big Y, which is too bad because it is very convenient to where I live. To top it off, Alyssa the cashier who I cashed out with, continuously coughed into her HANDS as she proceeded to ring out and touch every single FOOD item I purchased. Absolutely disgusting. Any person working in a food industry, whether it be a grocery store, a dunkin donuts, or a fine dining restaurant in NYC, should know basic hygiene etiquette when interacting with the public. I'd like to finish this post with saying I personally worked in a restaurant for 8+ years through high school and college, and I empathize in certain situations - disgusting produce and nasty employee hygiene is not something I can give a pass. For people reading this, I'd recommend shopping at the Stafford Springs Big Y - they have heavy foot traffic so their products rotate on the shelves, and their produce is always beautiful and fresh. read more

Sorry everyone is having such bad experiences here. I think this store is great. Lots of options and I've won more gold and silver coins than I can spend. Also, I won a six month silver membership for free. I've never had a problem with the service, but then again, I usually already know what I'm going in for and don't have to ask for help. My only complaint is that there is a very slow cashier, but I avoid going into that line when I see that person working. Other than that, I really enjoy shopping here. read more

My go-to store for regular grocery shopping. FOUR STARS for that aspect. My main gripe is the pizza. Love the sauce; cheese; assorted toppings. BigY would be our first choice for pizza nights if it weren't for the under-proofed crust :( Consistently under-risen even. Sure--the edges are properly risen. But when the underbelly of the pizza is like 1/4" thick (thin, actually) and opaque and sort of slimy, well...you end up scraping the toppings off and discarding the crust. Yo...that is not pizza. Manager Jim promptly responded to my online complaint and was apologetic and even gifted a couple of gold coins for my trouble...he offered either a refund or a free replacement pizza. (I opted for another pizza days later). Sheesh. The guy working the oven must've either known my name from the complaint or else the pizza staff got a talking-to because when I picked it up, he not only boasted how 'perfectly done' the crust was ... he also invited me to lift a slice (bare-handed even!) to check it out. It was the same damned under-proofed crust as always. My bad for even accepting it, but I did. And we scraped the toppings off and enjoyed them with the barely-risen outer crust and some extra virgin olive oil. Going to order pizza elsewhere, but what a shame.
