Have you ever seen the sloths at the DMV? They move faster than the self checkout verification process at this store. Today was my daughter's birthday party and she was late because the front desk only has one tablet to verify orders and the manager told me there was nothing he could do. I waited over 15 minutes to be verified then had to abandon ship and just go through the regular checkout. I've never been more frustrated. Nobody seemed to care, store manager especially. read more

I am long-standing customer and have always found about 95% of the staff to be friendly and helpful. A glaring exception to this is someone frequently placed at the self-checkout area where she comes into frequent contact with human beings. This person radiates the friendly, customer-oriented persona one might expect to find in a prison guard on Death Row or behind the counter in a North Korean commissary. Management might want to give this some thought. Their recent remodeling has been most confusing and seems to emphasize a very wide aisle of super-sized sugary drinks and salty, carbo-rich junk food. One must now also run the gantlet leading up to the self-service checkout area through an array of similar treats. Perhaps this says something about the shifting target demographic. read more

This place & Whole Foods are located conveniently on my way home. While it's not as expensive as Whole Foods, it still is pretty expensive, lacks sale items, and their fruits and veggies spoil quickly. The last few times I was there, they seemed to be running low on several items--for example I wanted to buy ground Turkey. Asked one of employees where i could find some---there were two packs left for $8+/pound. I refused to pay that for some ground turkey I normally get for $3. this week I was excited to find some for $4/pound. when I got home I realized why it was so "cheap"--it was 85/15 when I normally buy 93/7. Last week I bought asparagus--spoiled within 2 days. Bought spinach two days ago--already spoiled. my fridge is new & produce I've purchased from elsewhere in the past never had this issue. 2nd time they've sold and kept expired eggs on the shelf. I've had other expired items purchased there as well, which at this point it's on me for not checking. As of writing this it's the 7th of April and the eggs expired on the 5th. Easy enough to keep track of inventory and make sure the employees are doing the same properly as well. Other than that? This really has gotten ridiculous. I needed a quick meal and figured some sushi would be great. Reviewed the different options and decided to go with Spicy tuna on brown rice. After opening the package up all I can see is fake crab. But wait. If you REALLY REALLY look close up. You can see the fish scraps on the top of this, and every, piece of sushi. It's literally barely any spicy tuna. Also the fish quality of the sushi has dropped. If you don't want to sell it-don't. But if you do, add fresh fish and enough so a human can see it. However, pretending this is fresh, and that this is a reasonable amount of spicy tuna is just crazy. Interested in fresh sushi at Big Y? Bring your magnifying glasses. If you want sushi at Big Y, you'd be better off buying a Slim Jim and looking for the real beef in there Stay clear! EDIT: The manager contacted me, wanted to make the bad experience right. They suggested a refund. I asked for just a replacement sushi. The quality of the sushi and tuna was as we'd expect--great quality on the replacement. It's possible it was an outlier experience. I also posted images of the new sushi roll--as you can see--which is MUCH better looking and tasted great. As a result of the replacement sushi, I moved this 1-star review to a 4-star evaluated based on my most recent experience with the replacement sushi! read more

There webpage indicates you can place you grocery order online and then pick up at the store. You cannot! They dump you off to a delivery service with and extra charge. I waited till the last day to buy a prime rib roast for Christmas dinner, Every store I went to was sold out. I called Big Y in Plainville, ct. The per that answered the phone in the meat department told me they had only a few more roasts left and they were going fast, so I got on the highway and got there in a few minutes and I got a nice big 15lb. roast, cause if I didn't get one our Christmas Day tradition would have ended. This Big Y is your average store with a somewhat limited selection because it's a small store but a huge variety of kosher foods and a large selection for Passover. I don't typically write reviews for a supermarket but this one was driving me crazy yesterday. There were maybe 4 registers open, two express lines. And there's nowhere to wait. You block the aisle when the lines get too long. It was frustrating to be shipping and navigate the store but even more frustrating to be waiting in line and get stuck in everyone's way as they were shopping. It seems like they should consider having more registers open especially when it's that bust. And when they have three employees at customer service just standing around it is even more frustrating. read more

So I go to this Big Y often and it can get very busy. However, it is kept very clean, organized, and staffed with friendly faces. I bring my blind friend here once a week to pick up her groceries and drop off her bottles for recycling. She does take a little time ordering and sorting out what she needs. But the staff is always so nice and accommodating. The manager Justin even knows her by name and when he sees her he comes over to help. So disappointing to see that Big Y has gone the way of Stop and Shop, and replaced humans with machines. Why pay employees when you can get customers to work for free? The fact that there is "no job loss" doesn't address the problem of insufficient numbers of cashiers to begin with. Now there are just self-checkout lanes instead of additional employees which have been needed for years. And if customers request self check-out it's probably because they have given up on "world class customer service" and just want to get their shopping done. I'm surprised to see such poor reviews for this Big Y. It has become our go-to grocery since moving to the area and I have yet to find something I don't like about it. The prepared meat section always has delicious and reasonably priced options for grilling, seafood is the same, produce is fresh and well stocked, bakery tastes as good as it looks, store is clean and organized, sushi and pizza is delicious (I've heard!). Staff has always been friendly and always plenty of registers open! The coin thing seems to be mostly a thing of the past (I have a silver card that provides discounts for all the sale items), however they do have something with gold coins that I don't quite understand how to access. read more

The people of West Hartford deserve a better Big Y than this one... I went here last night for the first time since I moved out of WeHa four years ago. I was searching for the "Tonight Dough" Ben & Jerry's ice cream flavor, but of course, they did not have it. Compared to other locations, their hot food station sucks and they have none of their famous fish and chips or their famous fried chicken. There is no comfortable eating station too. This location should be remodeled and look like the Guilford, CT location. A redeeming value of this location is their HUGE kosher section, which is great for Passover Seder shopping. When those items are on clearance, I come out with lots of Passover Manischewitz products. I go here because the grocery stores near me have virtually no kosher sections. Luckily for WeHa people in Bishop's Corner, there are better places to shop like Crown Market, Whole Foods, and Walmart Marketplace. read more

The store is sometimes out of stock on staple items usually meats. Some of the savings can be rather substantial especially when combining manufacturer coupons and your store discount card. I don't find the service here to be terrible but not excellent either. Usually it takes awhile to find someone to assist and not everyone is always as helpful as the next. I appreciate the great grocery store options we have here in the Farmington Valley and I wanted to share that I was reminded tonight of how, in addition to having a great variety of high-quality food, the Big Y in Avon goes above and beyond on the Customer Service front. After shopping tonight, I was not able to get into my car as my key FOB had died and I couldn't figure out how to replace the battery. When I went back into the Big Y, the young man at the front desk quickly called the night manager, who Googled how to replace the battery in my key FOB, found me a new battery, and replaced it for me. Better than the Shop Rite it was before, but the deli and bakery still have much to be desired. Use it for stocking your cabinets, not so much the fridge. Not laid out well, but if you actually collect the coins they give out you can find some good deals. I use it to get the essentials, plus their chicken salad in the prepared food sction is awesome. I would say Big Y is a step above Wal Mart (1 star) and a step below Whole Foods. They don't seem to have the best quality stuff but the staff are friendly. I'm not a huge fan of the big Y coin thing, and this store has a bit of a strange layout- really narrow aisles, elevation changes-- and because of its size there's not a great selection of ethnic foods (ex: not a single indian option). But, it has a decent selection of your standard options (including the winter-only flavors of polar sparking water, which I came here for) and friendly workers. I did find some beef jerky with those coupons stuck to them that either come from the manufacturer or are put on by the store, and found out at the register that they had expired months ago. Luckily it was jerky, so I didn't worry too much about that meaning they'd been sitting on the shelf for months, but I thought it was strange they wouldn't honor the coupon in that case. It was on the products on their shelves. I'm not going to make a big deal over $1 in the store, but it just seemed strange that the automatic response wasn't to give me the $1 off. It has a great selection and the Big Y World Class Deli Meats are all natural free-range and infinitely lower sodium than any other deli meat, and it's cheaper too!!! They have a good selection of everything - cheeses importantly - and occasionally you will run into a person carting samples of food around. The other day it was lobster rolls! They sell local farm-grown vegetables during the summer months, and it's always nice to support local growers. I like Big Y, but like S&S, the prices are just too high on things like boneless chicken and ground beef and chips to not go to Trader Joe's, Shop Rite, Stew Leonard's, WalMart, etc. etc. read more
