I shop at West Side Market in Rocky Hill when I want meat, deli and produce items that are a couple of steps up from my near-home grocery store. In addition to the quality upgrade, the service is much better than my usual grocery store. There are an appropriate number of people working in the deli and meat shop, and I am more confident that they will fulfill my orders in an effective manner. For instance, I can see that the ground chuck has been ground recently and they package the exact weight I want. I can point to the steaks or chops that I want. With my normal grocery store, there is nobody on standby in the meat department. I've been shopping at my usual place for over ten years and I don't even know how to request a butcher without hunting down a store employee to page somebody. The deli is really good too. They have Boar's Head deli meats and their prepared foods are better than many grocery stores. At my normal grocery store, they may have three people working behind the deli counter, but only one of them is helping customers in the store. I assume the other two are fulfilling delivery orders. It's not a good experience to be next up for 10 minutes. At West Side, the line moves quick because they have sufficient people. For these reasons, when I have a bit more time and/or when we have company, I prefer to shop for fresh items at West Side. It is smaller. So they may not have everything you buy at a larger store. read more

I stopped in for a few odds and ends today including a small quiche that we always enjoy. I also erred by ordering a 6" Italian grinder. It was packed with meat, cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, and banana peppers and garnished with olive oil and vinegar. So what went wrong you likely will inquire? It was too much of a good thing. I am embarrassed to admit that I could barely finish half with the remainder set aside for another meal. The price was modest in comparison to both the quantity and quality. Meat department new hires are not trained well and unsanitary conditions unacceptable. Staff with untied long hair and grey meat on the shelves. I stopped by this morning quickly to grab something on my way to an appointment. There was only one register open and that customer had a cart full of merchandise. Both cashier and customer were VERY chatty and there was no one around to help bag. After waiting what seemed like an eternity, I grabbed my 6 cans of cat food and went to the self-checkout, which I HATE using. I'm a senior and I always have a problem with these, which I did this morning. Fortunately, a young man was cleaning nearby and I called for help and he responded right away. On my way out, I couldn't resist stopping by the service counter to ask WHY they couldn't open another register. The VERY rude woman I found there informed me that she "had no cashiers." No apologies, no explanation, nothing. I couldn't help mentioning that if I wanted to ring up and bag my own groceries, that I would apply for a job. Unbelievably, she told me - very sarcastically - to "go online to apply." SERIOUSLY? Customer service is obviously dead at this store, which I once treasured for their family-style atmosphere. read more

We've been coming to West Side for years. They have a great meat Dept. I saw that someone posted that they felt their "sales" were a scam because Walmart's meat was cheaper. REALLY! Lol Everything that we have ever gotten over the years from West Side was fresh and delicious. Their spoon roasts are melt in your mouth. They have store made burgers that are really trimmed ( my daughter is a fanatic about finding gristle in her burgers, if she finds any she's done) never had a problem. They have store made venison sausage which is also delicious. Their steaks and chops are on point. Their deli and seafood depts are also top notch. Their produce is a little on the high end but there's other stores for that. The staff in those depts are typically very friendly and helpful. They will also take phone orders that you can pick up which is super helpful. read more

This location had pretty well every item I was looking for. I just wanted a salad and some fruit and the salad was really fresh and the fruit was really fresh, so their items are some of the best. The pricing is a little bit high but the staff is really nice and I was able to get through the line very quickly. Look forward to visiting these guys again. read more

I don't usually shop here because I live on the other side of town, but if I"m over on route 3 and need groceries, I'll go in. I did visit today, and it was fine, except that one of the employees in the bakery department was yelling about immigrants. Like, literally yelling as she stocked the bagel shelves-- she wasn't talking to a friend or anything, she was just announcing to the store generally that "we" (non-immigrants) need to "storm city hall" to protest whatever favorable treatment she thinks immigrants are getting. It was annoying, and most people were ignoring her. And lest you misunderstand me: I wouldn't care whether she was complaining about immigrants, or Trump, or the student debt crisis-- I just want to do my grocery shopping without hearing someone hollering their political opinion for no reason. No need to pick up pre~packaged meat unless you are really in a rush. Grab a number take your time & you'll actually spend less money because you can choose as much or as little from their selection of hamburg, chicken to wonderful roasts & store made selection of sausage. Grrrreat high end "neighborhood" market on the ever expanding Shunpike Road. I work close by and heard from co-workers this a perfect stop for breakfast, lunch and your take home Honey Do list. I stopped for my first time recently for just that, The Honey Do List. However, I couldn't stick to the list as soon as I walked through the door. I first prowled the fruits and vegetables, picking the grabbing. Then onto the meats, deli, seafood, and bakery - OY - I was out of control! So with that surge of shopping frenzy, I continued through the aisles, freezer sections, and specialty foods (Gluten Free mostly). Somewhere along the way, I had to transfer from my overburden hand basket and stretching leg to a cart. That only worsened my now forgotten list of 4-5 items to a major spree. Wait! I over looked the dairy and cheese cases, this can't happen. Loaded my final purchases and proceeded to the check out, in almost a sweat fearing my bill, but rejoicing at the thought that Honey Do's like this will never come my way again. Checkout was that bad considering the volume. I blame West Side for making it ALL look (taste) so good. I guess they're not to be blamed this is their speciality. Westside is one of those great IGA's. It doesn't necessarily carry every item you may be looking for but what they do have is an awesome butcher area with great quality cuts of beef, pork & chicken. They have a cute little seafood area with a small selection of fresh fresh fish. The deli area has Boar's Head cheese's & meats which is a plus, since I do love that brand. They have a Hugh selection of freshly made salads. The best things they have are an awesome salad bar with fresh ingredients and usually 2 to 3 soups to choose from for lunch. They also have sushi! Which is very fresh and made on the spot. You can also buy slices of pizza or have them make you a grinder or sandwich on a hard roll with toppings of your choice. I love coming here for a nice quick lunch or to grab a nice steak for the grill. read more

Like other IGA's that I have visited throughout Connecticut, I know walking in that I am not going to find the same range of food products that I will be able to get at some of the larger supermarket chains in the area and my overall grocery bill be slightly higher. HOWEVER, what West Side Market lacks in these areas they make up for immensely with quality of the food they sell and the customer service they offer. Two high points of West Side Market are their Deli and Meat Departments. The store has a huge selection of Boar's Head products as well as their own "West side Brand" . The deli case also boasts a diverse array of salads and side dishes - from the Green Goddess Salad (a personal favorite) to their Grilled Vegetables - to perk up any meal. The meat department at West Side carries selection of meats as well as a variety pre-made options such as gourmet beef patties, apple stuffed pork chops and even veggie burgers! For those nights when you just don't feel like cooking, West Side Market has a rotating hot bar as well as a "by the ounce" salad bar, a small deli, and pizza shop. And all the employees at the back of the store have great personalities and seem to care about their jobs. Then, there's the front end, which leaves very much more to be desired. I have been shopping at West Side Market since it opened. Everyone is friendly and the quality is great. However, I am a senior and my daughter has been shopping for us. She was at West Side yesterday and at the checkout counter, the person scanning the items turned away from her, removed his mask, and sneezed into his shoulder. Her reaction was to get away from someone sneezing and left the store. She called the store immediately and was told she should not have left and to call owner the next day, which she did. I spoke to the manager today, he was polite and told me that the CDC guidelines tell you to sneeze into your shoulder. I asked if the CDC tells you to remove your mask before sneezing into your shoulder. He didn't directly answer and did not want to discuss the matter any further and thanked me. I have lived in Rocky Hill for over 70 years and will tell all my senior friends about this incident and obviously will no longer shop at West Side. John H. read more

My friend and I went in at about 6:00 to pick out something for dessert for a dinner gathering we were having. The bakery was beautiful and had a large selection. We decided to get a chocolate cream pie which was behind the glass so we patiently waited a few minutes for a bakery associate to emerge behind the counter. After a little bit I went to a register and let the cashier know we needed help in the bakery. A few minutes later a young man came over and made it very clear that the bakery is not his department by stating it many times and really made us feel like a serious burden. He walked around blindly behind the counter complaining for a few minutes and then just left. A few seconds later a young lady came behind the counter and even she had to deal with him yelling from across the aisle that bakery isn't his department, implying that she needed to deal with what he was unwilling to figure out. The young lady ignored him, smiled at us, put our pie in a box and thanked up for our business. I would have a much better opinion of this store if the young man had never come to the counter and we had simply had to wait a few extra quiet minutes for the nice lady to come help us. I wish I had looked at name tags but I was so annoyed that I just wanted to pay for the pie and go. The pie was delicious and a big hit at our gathering. read more

I wish I could give this place a zero. Piss poor customer service. I went in here to pick up lunch for a co-worker and myself. I used self-checkout, therefore had to do two separate orders. I scanned all my items, putting them on the right side of the machine then completed payment. Began the second order and a young male worker that was paying no attention to me the entire time I was using the machine, runs over to me and claims I did not pay for my first order. He saw 10 secs of me using the machine, how could he assume I did not pay? I began speaking to him and flashed him my receipt and he said "Oh" and left, no apology. Fortunately enough for him, I had no time to address the situation with a manager since I had to go back to work. I made a call to the store manager and they seemed hesitant to even hear my situation. I received an apology but it's not enough. Very rude staff and accusatory. I have not and will never come back to this store. I will be telling everyone I know to do the same. read more

Hands down the best grocery store in town. Everyone who works here is so friendly and so competent. They have an amazing meat department. We always get all of our meat. They often have Prime cuts and Angus on sale. The prices are comparable to other grocery stores. There are some things I pay more for and some things I pay less for than other stores. I have driven in when the parking lots were completely full and I probably have never waited in line more than 3 minutes. When I go to big Y, all the cashiers are fraternizing and fooling around and not paying attention to customers. At West side you are priority. All the lines are open that are needed. I love the cashiers here. They are all young, high school age kids and they never fool around. Always smiling. I absolutely can't get enough of this place. It's like a family. This used to be my favorite grocery store, but not any longer. I should have known when the self checks appeared that things were going to get worse, and my trip here yesterday confirmed my fears. One of the selling points of West Side was their butcher shop, always staffed by friendly, knowledgeable people. Not this time. My husband asked for a couple of things, only to be pointed at the case of prewrapped meats. The staffers were busy discussing which of them would be working on Fathers' Day, and none of them were people we recognized from previous visits. The meat that they did package...six chicken thighs...turned out to be five chicken thighs. Makes it hard to ration them for three diners. We stood in line for quite a while to check out, since there were only two registers open and the rest were the dreaded self checks. It used to be worth paying their high prices because of their excellent quality and service. Without the quality and service the reason to shop here is gone. read more

Its amazing that that they have managed to keep quality fresh produce and meats at such great prices. I always leave feeling as if I have great meals in bags, not wondering "what did i get with all that money" as I do with a store such as stop and shop. Westside meats have always had a long standing tradition of being good quality. For summertime grilling their case of burgers is hard to beat. It's still one of the only grocery stores around that grinds it's patties in house. The customer service here is lacking and is why I'm hesitant to give more stars here. I love West Side. I remember back to being a kid when it was in the plaza next door, but now as an adult I can shop in the stand-alone store! When you don't want to deal with the crowds of Big Y or Stop and Shop, this is your best bet! This is one of the very few stores I will purchase meat at - it is always delicious and fresh, and also packaged to order. I tend to stock up and freeze their meat when it goes on sale so I have plenty to last a while! I can see how some people commented that their prices tend to be a tad higher BUT they offer different sales every week, slashing the prices. If you watch their flyer, you can get what you need at great prices - even for less than the sale prices of other grocery stores in the area. Employees are always helpful and friendly - and they use PAPER BAGS instead of plastic - That's an extra star for me! ALSO: for anyone with a nut allergy - their deli department even has a special "Nut free" slicer (since there is a type of deli meat with pistachio seasoning on it) - definitely a nice touch!! If you shop there often, employees at the deli-counter will even recognize you and remember you need that slicer!! read more
