I am a design professional and I have some pretty high standards. Brenda is my absolute favorite family photographer. Her work is breathtakingly beautiful. I think what really sets her apart are the following three things: (1) Editing. Brenda does the best digital touch-up and editing of photographs I have ever seen. The colors are more vibrant, the contrast is striking, and she will cut-and-paste various elements from various "takes" in order to achieve perfection. She will clean up dirty hands or smooth out complexions or remove grass stains. She will take the best smile from each family member and combine them into one amazing finished product. And I don't know how she makes the light glow, but she does. (2) Creativity. When she photographed my family, not once did we get asked to turn our chin awkwardly to the left. Instead, we climbed railroad tracks, we hid in bushes, we looked for butterflies, and we just walked around. Nothing felt forced or posed, and she end results really show that. (3) Patience and Laid-Back Attitude. In addition to the list of pose ideas she had in her head, Brenda also asked the kids for their ideas as well -- AND WE DID THOSE TOO. This made it feel fun and interactive, and kept the kids engaged. To loosen things up, she told a series of knock-knock jokes while snapping away, and got some honest and happy smiles out of everyone. So much better than "1-2-3-smile!" We've gotten our holiday photos taken by Brenda for the past three years both outdoors and indoors. She does a fantastic job composing great shots in many settings. This review has been a long time coming. Brenda did our family portraits about 2 years ago. We met her on the beach with my husband, kids and our dog. She has a great eye for photography. She even made sure she met us at the exact time that would be good for lighting with the sun, ocean, clouds, etc. She just make sure everything was perfect. We were extremely happy with the results. My husband has spent time as a professional sports photographer, so he knows his stuff and has the glass for it. His standards for a photographer are really high and he looks for photographers who have an eye for things and are creative and don't just produce the same cookie cutter photos or use photoshop gimmicks. We first used Bijou Blue for a shoot with extended family, and Brenda did an awesome job of corralling 2 wiggly and jet lagged toddlers, an infant and reluctant grandparents and capture so many tender moments where we wanted to print out nearly ever photo to frame. We recently signed up for a mini-session in Golden Gate Park and thought we had a great plan, but of course our normally cheerful 1.5 year old son had other ideas and ended up being grouchy and non-cooperative. Brenda was the consummate professional and had a bunch of ideas how to get him to smile a bit, but we still walked away thinking that the session was a bust and all we might get is a bunch of photos of a stoic toddler. I should have known that Brenda would come through -- she managed to capture the exact moments where he cracked a smile, but she also managed to capture so much of what is fun at this stage -- his independence, cuddles, and got some great shots of my husband, who is usually behind the camera himself. After many years of portrait studio family pictures, we decided to branch out and try for outdoor photographs with a professional photographer. We took advantage of one of Bijou Blue's mini-sessions at Ardenwood Farm in late September and were thrilled with the results. Brenda was prepared with a bag of tricks and a repertoire of jokes to help warm up the kids to the camera She had ideas for poses, but also just let the kids be kids and really captured their personalities and relationship. She was incredibly patient and flexible throughout the shoot. Brenda was quick to get us proofs, even providing a few edited prints as a sneak peek within a day or two of the session. Her editing work was amazing, bringing out the best features within a pose, and merging the best of each person from a series of shots to get a great final shot while still looking natural. She delivered fully edited prints within a week and a half as she had promised. We have gotten compliments from everyone who has seen them on how wonderful they are. She was very prompt in initially getting back to me and setting up a date for our family mini session. I told her the type of location we were looking for and she suggested Montara State Beach. She suggested the best time of day for the lighting and was flexible with adapting to the ever changing coastal weather. Brenda was very engaging and patient with our crazy 1.5 year old son - she had even asked ahead of time who his favorite characters were and broke out into the Elmo's world song which made his day! We received the photos in only a few short days and picked our final copies and then she sent them digitally and on a USB drive (very pretty box & USB w/ logo) - all in less than a week from when we took the pics to when they were finished (and half of that week was because I took so long picking from all the great shots!) The pictures are wonderful and I'm really happy we found her. She is very reasonable in prices compared to other photographers that we have used in the past. We were looking for someone to do our holiday family portrait and Brenda was recommended to us by a neighbor in the East Bay. We are so happy to have found her! She was very accommodating and agreed to meet us at the beach in San Francisco on a Saturday afternoon. At the last minute we changed the location to Land's End trail and she was so kind and cheerfully accommodated us. The trail turned out to be quite busy with a lot of traffic, and yet Brenda remained energetic, patient, and good humored. To make it short: Brenda is one of THE BEST decision I made in planning my baby's 1st birthday party. To make it long: Moms and Dads are pretty forgetful. Call it lack of sleep... high energy babies, work, life, etc... Then you have to scramble to set up a party and make it special - with a LOT less time and energy to plan it (unlike your wedding)... Venue, Food, Guest List, Favors, Decorations, Dessert... did I forget something? YUP! I need to look after our baby and try my best to be a great host/hostess to your guests... AINT NO BODY GOT TIME to go around and take pictures, right? Sure, your Aunt Susan will send you 100 blurry photos from her iPad/iPhone... and in there, there's a good shot here and there. But the photos are of the same people - that she was hanging out with... The party's over and now your scrambling to clean up and put things away... and then your baby's ready for her night routine... The day (like your wedding day) is a big blur... and you go on with your week. Shortly after the big day, you get a cute message from Brenda with a little spoiler photo.. and now, you want MORE. Then a few more days later, she gives you a BEAUTIFUL video slideshow... shortly after that, you get her MANY, beautifully edited photos. Brenda was able to capture MANY moments that we missed - this is priceless. She went above and beyond by getting to the party earlier to scout the area... and she even helped me set up a little bit! It was a beautiful windy and sunny SF day and she was running around, and sweating photographing our guests and the party atmosphere. Can't even tell you how many times I've seen the video slideshow on repeat. Of course, the guests loved seeing it and we were able to share the day with our families and friends who couldn't make it to the party. Brenda took photos of my husband and I in the evening of our wedding day on the beach outside of Ritz Carlton Half Moon Bay. The actual wedding was in downtown San Francisco during the day with a separate photographer that took a lot of our formal photos, so our hour with Brenda was amazing since we could just relax and be us since it was just us three on the beach. After our first photo session with Brenda, my face hurt (in a good way) from laughing and smiling so much. She even had our very shy 2 and a half year old laughing!
