Since I now reside on the west-side of Chicago, I put together a collection of bike stores near my apartment via Yelp. And as of now 'Bike 4 Life' just made that list. I honestly did not expect to visit this location because I had my sights set on 'Pedal To The People', but due to them being busy and out-and-about, I looked up the next closest store which was 'Bike 4 Life'. I called them up, and I was invited to bring in my 'Giant TCR Composite 1', which recently had a flat due to glass being in the roads. Upon entering I was greeted by, Sam who informed me a lot about 'Bike 4 Life', and also their feed the homeless food drive, which individuals deliver food via bicycle couriers to Chicagoans in need to raise awareness of the stores cause. While waiting for my tire to be fixed and looking around at the stores huge selection of fixie bikes, Sam also informed me that proceeds for the shop go to AIDS, Cancer and Diabetes. I love cycling, however I dread purchasing new tires when one gets damaged, but to hear that proceeds go towards a cause, it eased that feeling of purchasing an expensive tire for my road bike really quick. I felt very welcome at 'Bike 4 Life', and I will most definitely return for future repairs, plus other events they have which I have subscribed to via their website. I took a deep interest in the homeless food drive because I take part in many volunteer activities at my church, and around Chicago that involve feeding the homeless. And what better way to do it than while on my beautiful road bike along with many other riders. I'm actually very excited that I encountered 'Bike 4 Life' because I wouldn't have been aware of their cause. I hope this review helps all, but meanwhile I leave you all with this quote by Dave Eggers "I am a bike enthusiast; there's a certain amount of romance to bikes. They're both beautiful and utilitarian." Thomas Gouard

The fake/replica Oury grips, no name or nothing and flimsy. Bad business

Sells replica/cheap bicycle parts in name brand PACKAGING. Bought some Oury grips, turns out they're fakes in name brand oury packaging. Claims he doesn't know anything about it, which makes no sense since he's a bicycle shop owner that orders the stuff. Just made up some excuse so that he doesn't have to give a refund. Very over priced, wouldn't recommend.

I got my SE from here. They got all kinds of cool acessories to choose form.

This is one of my favorite shops. I have been to this shop over 3x so far and every time I go there it gets better and better. The first time I walked in was just to put some air in my tires. I got a really cool vibe, and some good advice. The second time was when I was just browsing around for a bike. The sales guy Moss said he had three things to let me know before I got started. First, I could ask him as many questions as I wanted. Second, I could test ride any bike in the shop as long as it did not have a deposit on it, and thirdly, just because I test ride a bike, it dose not mean I will be obligated to buy anything. That's exactly what he said to me. I was blown away. Absolutely, no sales pressure at all. I couldn't ask for a better deal. I finally ended up buying an SE Lager from them. Moss, matched the internet price, gave me great service and customized my bar tape to the color I wanted. He even gave me a trade in value for the existing tires I had on it so that I could get some Continental / gator skins that I wanted. How cool is that. They do however have these funky store hours. They are only open 5-6 hours a day. When I asked them why do they do that, Moss said, " This is a not -for-profit bike shop, and the money raised goes to help our cause. We are all just volunteers here and don't get paid to be here, but we do it couse we love it,.... as soon as we get more volunteers, we will be open more often." that makes sense. Thanks Moss for my smooth looking costume SE., you'll be seeing a lot more of me as time goes on.

This is one of the more popular spots in Chicago for single speed bikes, and they've got an interesting variety of cool stuff.

I have to give a shout out to the village cycle center…read more I've been getting increasingly into cycling over the last couple years as it seems to be the only kind of fitness that doesn't absolutely wreck my body. And at the end of last season I decided it was time to upgrade the fx3 (which I also got from VCC during covid). Now for the last 8 months I've been browsing trek.com, specialized.com, reddit, facebook marketplace, etc., trying to get a sense of what I want. I'll say considering most bike manufacturers have a large range of bikes for each model, the marketing folks then don't do a particularly great job explaining the differences. Enter VCC. I stopped by because I wanted to know if I was 56 or 58cm, with a plan to go buy used in the approximate $2000 range. My man Tim spent maybe 2-3 hours with me walking me through the entire range of trek road bikes, teaching me the differences among the gearsets, alloys used in the frames, the brakes, etc. It really made me confident in terms of zeroing in on the bike that would fit my needs. And it just so happened they had a prior year model at a price that was close-ish to my original budget (lol). Walked home with a new Domane SL5, and now something like 6 weeks and 500+ miles later I'm a pretty happy camper.

The workers were what you'd expect as far as being nice - but the mechanics are amateur at best. After my first disappointment with their routine "maintenance service", I wanted to give them another shot with my brakes. After all, I yearn to have a good relationship with a local bike shop. And sadly, it's a bigger disappointment than my first visit. I asked for them to bleed both brakes. I received a call saying they're "fine" and suggested NOT bleeding brakes; but the pads and rotors were caked in oil and other residue (I cleaned them both 3 days ago). But I figured you gotta trust the pros, right? Wrong. I figured they'd replace the pads, clean the rotors and call it a day. After all, I hadn't sanded the pads this past time and they are getting old (10 months). Nope, just VERY poorly sanded the existing brake pads, cleaned the rotor below my normal standard and was charged nearly $50. For that. To sand 4 little brake pads and (presumably) apply some rubbing alcohol to the rotors. $50. Look at the picture of the brake pads after they serviced them. Lmao. I could have done that for $2 at home since all I need is a little more rough sand paper. Ha. And no, it didn't help my brakes at all. They produced very little friction, we're extremely loud and there was even a clicking noise from my drivetrain on my ride home I haven't even diagnosed yet. I just had to write this review. Ha. Should have just told them to screw off and bleed the damn brakes. To me, it's simple. This is a classic big city bike shop that is money hungry. $50 for that is LAUGHABLE. I could take this to my hometown bike shop and for that money they'd do a bleed, drivetrain clean, fork pressurization, frame clean, etc. And after all that, I still need my brakes bled. They didn't do it. Ha. EDIT: Attached is the video of my new wheel sound! I think it's just the dork disk, but still.
