Had a great experience getting my husbands bike repaired and cleaned up. Staff was super friendly and the store is at a super convenient location right off of first street near Ankeny boulevard. They are not bad at their prices in some minor repairs of a bike that was in storage for almost 8 years. Store was clean and well stocked in higher end cycles and cycling supplies! Staff was great and overall I am impressed!! If I need anything else in repairs or supplies I will be back!! read more

Ok, I will give this place a big WOO HOO! I took my specialty bike (electric bike) here to repair the rear tire. They were able to fix it, it was done by the date promised (but I couldn't pick it up until a couple days later), and they didn't charge me much. I was willing to pay more, as this was a specialty electric bike and the repair involved the rear tire where the "gear mechanism" was. A little more difficult than the front tire. I mentioned that I had special "flat preventive" on my tire, and wanted the equivalent. They said my tire was fine, still had the "tough liner" that came with it, and all I needed was a regular tube. I came in an RV. So if you are in an RV, you cannot park in their lot, you cannot even get on the "Frontage" road that goes to their place, as the access road is too steep for a low clearance motorhome. Best to park at the Quick Trip across the street. That gas station has two long parking areas for trucks/RVs. If you do this, be sure to go in Quick Trip and ask permission and tell them you need to take a bike across the street and you have no place to park your RV. Quick Trip was good about letting me do this. I also want to give five stars to the employee who willingly went across the street to the gas station with me to help me bring my bike into the store. Getting my bike off the RV wasn't the problem, my problem was trying to get it across the street with a back tire running on the rim. I feared doing this as I might ruin the rim. I stop in here from time to time when I'm out buying something for the bike. A deals a deal right. However I'm not sure I've ever bought anything here. On one occasion the wife was wanting a new Brooks saddle. We talked with a gentleman about it, found what she wanted and he said he would order it and give us a call. Three weeks go by and no phone call. Guess they don't really want you to come back and buy stuff. FYI, It's been 4 months and still no call. On this trip we're out looking for a new rear bag. All of their bags had the Bike Country logo embroidered on them, which I'm sure for the same price as the non present unlabeled ones. If you want me to advertise for you drop the price 5 to 9 dollars otherwise pay me for being a billboard or mass transit bench. They were also charging $3 for bike trail maps you can get at almost any other cycling store or downtown farmers market for free. While perusing their merchandise I over heard one of the salesmen telling a customer he wasn't a Trek fan????? Wait aren't you a Trek dealership? If I was that customer I would have walked out and not bought a bike here. When I left she was taking it for a test ride. Maybe she did her due diligence and wanted that bike. The staff are friendly just not sure they really care if they have customers who want to buy stuff. We went back the next day and asked if they had any bags that didn't have their logo on them, nope. Oh well there are other bike shops and that is where we went. read more

I have been going to Bike country since at least 1986. I am 50 now and remember when Ankeny was that small hometown. Bears Restaurant.. Alco.... etc. Ankeny has exploded since then but Bike Country is still the same great service it's always been. I am a mechanic by trade so I can do most of my own maintenance but there are times it's worth it to have a professional working for you. The key to growing old is to keep moving! My Trusty Trek bike needed new tires recently. Bike country had exactly what I needed at a very fair price. I recommend BC to all my friends. I have bought two bikes here. I totally disagree with the other reviewer. I have taken my bike back for adjustments to the seat twice and also for a flat tire. They are quick to help. Shawn adjusted my seat and I am now riding pain free and there was no charge since I bought my bike there. read more

I bought a Thule Passage 3 bike rack from Bike Country last summer. According to the fit guide provided by Thule, it was a fit. Unfortunately the Saris Bones (which is what I wanted) was listed as incompatible in their guide. One of the gentlemen working that day even came out to help me get the Thule rack installed. For the rest of the summer I never had more than one bike on it, and it worked out great. Fast forward to this past weekend and I had three bikes on it and wanted to get a tube adapter to go on my wife's bike so it would fit easier on the rack. We had a car full of kids and a Burly in the trunk and we were riding after this pit stop. When we got to the shop, one of the employees (maybe an owner?) came out to assist me. She noticed the Thule rack was weighed down by the bikes and touching my spoiler. She pointed that out and checked her guide. While it was a fit (according to the book) she didn't like the way it was sitting and asked if she could take a look at it while we ride so that the kids didn't get restless. I assumed she was going to fiddle with the settings and straps while we were gone. About an hour later, we returned to the shop and I was shocked. My Thule rack was gone and replaced by an already installed Saris Bones rack that arched safely over the spoiler with room to spare. Figuring this was an upsell, I was already figuring out how to politely say "no thank you." Turns out, she was the owner and told me she just wasn't comfortable with the way the bike was sitting and if it was ok, she would be willing to trade me racks with no charge since the Saris was a much better fit and more stable. She also pointed out that with the Saris rack, I wouldn't need to buy the tube adapter that we originally came for. I've never had a business owner work so hard to help me avoid buying something! Recently bought a used bike for my 13 1/2 yr. old son from Bike Country and was very pleased with the attention given to me and my son. LeAnne was wonderful with me but even better with my son. She spent a lot of time explaining to him about how the gears work and how to use them properly. She was so patient with us and talked to my son very respectfully. She went into detail about her own experiences with riding at the age of 13. Just a few days later, the bike had a flat tire. I took it in and they found a hole in the tube and replaced it for NO CHARGE. I greatly appreciated their service. I also like the fact that they employ a lot of local high school students in the repair shop. They are teaching these young people a lot of important skills. read more

I took my bike in for a potential back wheel repair and tune up. I also needed new handle bar wrap and peddles. The peddles were out of stock and I was advised if they didn't come in, I would be contacted. I was given a date to pick up my bike and told I would be called if there were any challenges with the repair. I received no call. When I picked up my bike, the peddles hadn't been replaced. Thankfully a more expensive pair were available , however they still needed to be installed which took more time. 1.5 hours later I was able to leave with my tuned up bike, or so I thought. I rode my bike and noticed a continued challenge with the back tire. I took it to another bike shop and they immediately found a broken spoke and suggested the rim be replaced. read more

Great place to buy a bike if you have no desire to have any service after the sale. When you are looking for a bike here, you will be the #1 customer and treated like royalty. However, after you give them your hard earned money, do not expect to be fitted for that bike, you will pay for any tune ups and anything that goes wrong even in the first days or weeks after your purchase. My wife and I both bought high end bikes here and payed over $4000 for the pair and during the shopping process we were absolutely the only customers they wanted to talk to, we had their full attention and we felt great about buying here. Then came the loose spokes less than 100 miles on the bike....that'll be $45 dollars please. Also, could we please have a water bottle and water bottle holder......that'll be $30 please. Now the second bike, 50 miles in....my bike isn't shifting right, can you look at it? That'll be $25 please. And about being their #1 customers during the purchase......go back in the next day and you are a stranger, you have never met them before.. So, if you want to buy a bike and never expect a bit of service after the sale, and pay for any tune ups even the next day, then this is the place to throw away your hard earned money. Have bought 4 bike's here. Have ran the gammet of service. I am in the maintenance industry and cleaning a machine prior to service is a SOP. hint hint extra charge for cleaning ??? It is a business so I am not shocked by the extra charges, but some service for what we pay for our bike's would be nice. warranty service??.. does that make sense ??? the prices keep me coming back, and I have learned to do my own maintenance.
