I took a class for basic bike maintenance with Arthur today. Arthur was able to tailor a program suited to my bicycle and my needs. I have a fixed gear/single speed bike and wanted to learn how to change the fixed cog and the freewheel as I want to experiment with different gearing. We went step by step in the process while Arthur carefully observed me and advised me. We went over the various tools associated with fixed cog and freewheel cogs. Then, we covered proper chain tensioning unique to single speed/fixed bicycles. The whole time during the teaching session, Arthur was professional, kind, and supportive. I enjoyed his low-key teaching style and never felt like he was talking down to me. We also had time to just talk about bikes and biking in general. Overall, it was a great experience! We did not use Arthur for his bike repair CLASSES, but we did ask if he would be willing to repair our bikes. We had called several bike shops in the area. This was in the midst of the COVID-19 Shelter-in-Place. Other bikes shops were either not doing repairs (and only open for sales) or were backlogged due to the increased interest in recreational biking. We had 4 family bikes that needed tune-ups. We had to get the bikes to him, but he had them all finished in a couple days, where the bike shops were telling us they wouldn't get to ours for about 3 weeks. Arthur's prices (labor + parts) are extremely competitive vs. a bike shop and he's very knowledgable about making recommendations on what needs to be fixed and what doesn't. net-net he's honest + transparent about what is needed for your bike vs. trying to get customers to fix everything and jack up the prices. I am a returning customer (I used him about a year ago) I recently brought a few clunkers in (just to get them operational so my daughters and I could ride around the neighborhood. I've been seriously riding for over 20 years. I own an assortment of bikes, including hybrids with grip shifters, road bikes with Shimano index shifters, a tandem with a monster disk brake, and a high-end carbon-fiber bike with electronic shifters. For years, I've worked on this assortment of bikes with trepidation, as I knew enough to be dangerous. As a birthday present, my wife signed me up for the 40-hour class from Arthur. As others have noted, Arthur is a very patient teacher. When he says "let's remove that widget", he intends that you should remove it. This is not a class where you watch the teacher. You are wrenching on your bike (or his) while he's nearby giving advice if needed. When you've dropped his tool or a handful of bolts and washers on the floor for the nth time, he calmly retrieves them. When you are about to install something backwards, he gently points out the issue. When you work one-on-one, you have the opportunity to ask all of the questions you always wanted to ask. Even stupid questions are respectfully answered. Arthur's shop is fully stocked with top-of-the-line Park tools, and he knows how to use all of them. In this class we serviced hubs and bottom brackets, replaced brake and shifter cables, removed and reinstalled cassettes and chain rings, measured chain stretch, removed chain links and replaced chains, straightened bent derailleurs, trued wheels, replaced spokes, adjusted brakes, and serviced head sets. Not only am I confident that I can diagnose what's not working on my bikes, I now am confident that I can probably fix it. Last, Arthur taught me how to think like a mechanic. When we encountered problems that weren't simple to fix, he taught me how to carefully and methodically approach each problem. Tricks and tips were revealed, and sage advice was dolled out constantly. I would highly recommend Arthur to anyone who would like to learn how to maintain and repair their bike on their own. He takes the time to explain the potential root cause to a problem based on his experience and then guides you to methodically isolate the problem. My case is typical of a lot of recreational bikers who want to learn enough to be able to repair typical issues with a heavily used bike ( gears and derailleur adjustments, bottom bracket replacement, brakes and calipers repairs adjustments etc ) but don't want to take a full on bike mechanic course. Arthur was very flexible to setup a program with me where I paid for a specific number of hours and can come in as and when needed as any bike issues arise and can learn to fix those specific issues under his guidance.
