i enjoyed going to the dental hygeine college for numberous teeth cleanings. however, my patienace ran out today and i was asked to go to sacramento city college for further treatment. i was kicked out. oh well, i do not have the patience required for the students that are only a few months into the program. it is not for everyone. I came here as a patient of their free dental clinic: https://carrington.edu/location/san-jose-dental-hygiene-clinic/ My dental insurance at the time was being a pain in the ass, so I decided to look for cheaper alternatives - they happen to do cleanings for free. I was recruited personally by a dental hygiene student, as it seems they are in dire need of patients. When I first entered the clinic, all of the seats were taken up by people, so I was amazed that they seemed to be actively recruiting for patients, essentially. When I got my screening and assessment, I got an inkling as to why. Basically, the students need to do an exam on a live patient in order to pass for their certification, but a patient needs to meet very specific criteria in order to be used... I happen to have been one of them. Yes, everything is free, but it's balanced out by the time that you need to spend there. For example, the student performs dental scaling, notes down their observations, and then they need to wait for their instructor to come and do it again and make their confirmations or corrections. I had a good time working with my dental hygienist in-training, as she was very approachable, communicative, and informative. I learned a lot about dental work through her! I stopped going because I wasn't comfortable with multiple people working on my mouth (mainly happened because multiple students wanted to pass their test using me), I had other life issues that occurred at the same time, it was rough on me to spend the time to commute back and forth to San Jose, and their scheduling availability was not the most ideal. They seemed to only have a morning and afternoon session, each of which can take up to 4 hours. If you happen to be in a situation where you need a free dental screening, cleaning, or deep cleaning, and have time on your hands, I think this is a fine opportunity to explore. read more

My experience with Carrington College (San Jose) has been an ongoing struggle since 2021. I previously left reviews in 2021 and 2023 for similar issues, and unfortunately, nothing has improved. The difference now is that the administration is actively interfering with student grades. I returned to Carrington only because it is one of the few trade schools offering a Dental Hygiene program that can be completed in about 2 years and 4 months instead of the 4+ years at a community college. The tuition is extremely high, and with that cost, students should expect organization, consistency, and professionalism--none of which have been present this term. My first two terms went smoothly, and I maintained straight A's. This third term, starting October 13, has been chaotic and unprofessional, especially in Human Anatomy & Physiology 2. Instructor turnover, lack of communication, and constant changes created confusion and unnecessary stress. The biggest issue is that the school dean, Yvette Avilas, took control of this class--setting due dates, grading, and creating exams--despite not being the course instructor or properly credentialed for the subject. Exams were completely inconsistent with the material taught, assigned extreme point values (50 questions worth over 100 points), and included content not covered in lectures or study materials. Many students performed poorly, and several admitted they felt forced to use outside resources just to pass. When concerns were raised, student feedback was dismissed, and blame was placed on students rather than addressing the clear flaws in course structure and exam design. The president of the school initially acknowledged the issue but no meaningful resolution followed. Despite paying for tutoring, stopping work to focus on school, and dedicating countless hours to studying, my grade has been unfairly impacted. The stress from this experience has taken a serious toll on my mental and physical health. Carrington markets itself as student-focused, but the reality feels profit-driven, with disorganization and administrative overreach making it harder--not easier--for students to succeed. I would strongly caution anyone considering this school, especially for competitive programs like Dental Hygiene. read more

Teachers were leaving constantly in the middle of terms, many of my teachers, it was their first year teaching, and they had no clear direction. If you go here, you are on your own with learning, but I've heard it's like that at many accelerated nursing programs. read more

As a former student, please save yourself the money and headache of coming to this school. The program that I joined costed nearly $20k and the education I received was absolute garbage. Myself (and 90% of my classmates) left the program with minimal practical skills/knowledge and had to learn everything on the job afterwards. The instructors I had were unknowledgeable and unprofessional and as I talked to other students in other programs, they had the same to say about theirs. This school is desperate and will hire anyone because staff are constantly quitting. To say the least, it was the worst educational experience of my life. Before you join the program, they will have staff constantly reach out to you and act so kind and helpful but once you join and give them the money, all the help is out the door. I remember when I sent emails to counselors to express my concerns and frustration, they got ignored but it was brought up to the dean, and even then it was a lost cause. However, I have to say that the instructor I had the privilege of learning from--Ms. Allison has an incredible passion for teaching, and her dedication to her students was evident. She was always willing to address any questions, demonstrating patience and compassion. Her teaching style created a clearer understanding of the medical field, and she consistently made an effort to ensure that students grasped the necessary concepts. As my time with Carrington progressed, I noticed an odd pattern: the administration frequently implemented changes without prior notice, expecting students to adjust their schedules accordingly. This lack of consideration extended only one way, as there was little understanding or accommodation offered when students faced changes related to their personal or professional lives. This inconsistency raises concerns about the institution's commitment to its students' overall success. Carrington College offers a great educational experience largely due to its dedicated instructors who are committed to guiding students toward success. However, it is necessary to highlight some concerns regarding the school's priorities. There seems to be a significant focus on financial outcomes that may overshadow the primary goal of building student success. Future students should be aware that changes within the school often appear to prioritize corporate interests over the individual needs of students. It can feel as if student input is overlooked in decision-making processes, leading to a one-sided approach that may not accommodate everyone's circumstances. This review aims to provide future students with a clearer understanding of the environment they might run into at Carrington. It's unfortunate that there seems to be a disconnect between the expectations set for students upon enrollment and the reality they experience. During the necessary changes Carrington had to make within the past month, significant staff members who contributed to Carrington's success were let go. This has resulted in the remaining staff being overburdened, and resources being diverted to cover expenses such as hotel accommodations for instructors from other locations--all in an effort to cut costs. Meanwhile, there appears to be no hesitation in demanding financial contributions from students. It's a real shame. Please ALSO note that if you have a medical emergency or specific medical needs, the program does not provide the necessary support and threatens to remove you from the program. If they are unable to secure an externship site for you, they may consider those days as "absent" and drop you from the program, despite the circumstances being out of your control. It's now been almost 6 months since I graduated and more since I fully paid off my insanely expensive tuition. I am still not working in the field and haven't received the job search help I was promised despite reaching out. Imagine my surprise when I receive a letter in the mail from this school attempting to charge me $2073 with zero explanation, simply "balance due". I will be fighting this as I have received letters assuring me my tuition was paid it full and logged into my accounts to triple check I have nothing due (I don't). But let this be a warning just when you think this school is in your past they with come back to haunt you with a random $2k bill LOL. First things carrington advisers are great they will get you enrolled and encourage you. Of course only during the enrollment process... carrington is only selling you a dream. Since i started which was in september ive had 3 different instructors. And none are permanent. I dont think the school even cares to understand how hard it is to be on top on school assignements when they are constantly changing things and instructors. Some instructors dont even know what they are doing how are they supposed to teach us without knowing. Its setting us up for failure really. The minute i feel like im finally getting it a new instructor comes in and we hit bottom again. Each term is 5 weeks this last term it was taught by the dean which is yvette. In those 5 weeks we never did the second part of the class which is labs. On the very last day of the term we had 2 test and our final and she made us do 8 labs in the span of 2 hours. Those 8 labs were supposed to be done in the span of 5 weeks but since she never did the lab part of the class. She decided to put it on us on the very last day. It sounds like they are literally setting us up for failure. Not to mention in those 5 weeks i feel like i didnt learn anything. This education is coming out of our own money we are here to learn not just read a slideshow. As im reading a review i noticed a girl got dropped from the lab part of class. As a student attending Carrington I can say that things are incredibly unproductive and unprofessional. They try to really sell you on that they care about there students but nobody cares, in the Medical Assistant program they've had 3 different teachers in my time being there since October 2025, currently the dean Yvette Avila is the teacher and she is someone who is on a power trip, she's never even been a medical assistant and drop me from the lab part of the class, how does that even work? No clue. I wasn't even called or mentioned to about this and had to find out from fellow classmates because I missed 12 consecutive days even though I have a doctors note and she quote says " there's no sick days" even after I looked over my contract and no where states that. During the time I also was not there she wasn't even doing any labs she was just reading off of slides and kept using the words "I guess this is..." like she had no clue. Also talking about "rbf" or resting b face during a conversation about appearance in the work field was extremely unprofessional once again from Yvette Avila especially in a college setting. I reached out about my concerns and she was just unprofessional and I wrote and called the President Davina Wong and still have not heard back. At this point id rather drop out and start at a much better program which probably what I will be doing. This school needs serious help overall because of the unprofessionalism. Im so sad to have gone through this and having to deal with Yvette Avila has been incredibly frustrating and really pushes me to my edge of the seat, they need to hire someone new for the Dean of Medical assisting IMMEDIATELY. I'd hate for other students to have to go through this experience especially they way they sell it. I just graduated from the dental hygiene program at Carrington College and had a great experience. The program director, Miss Clor, cares so deeply for the students and our success and you could feel that radiate off her whenever she spoke to us. She signed us all up for our licensure exams so we didn't have to worry about that as the program was ending (there are a million other things to be worrying about at that time!), and was always available whenever we needed help. This type of behavior is true of a good 95% of the staff there! Of course you may experience some personality differences along the way, but when you make the connection with the doctors and other hygienist instructors in clinic, it makes the entire experience so enjoyable. I loved being in clinic and learning from my instructors - I was never made to feel inadequate or inferior, and a majority of them understood that we were LEARNING. And there is a LOT to learn when it comes to oral health. If you are considering coming to Carrington College for the dental hygiene program, don't think twice. You are in excellent hands with people who care about YOU and your education. I commuted to Carrington from Tracy four days a week and I would do it all again. :) read more

Very Unorganized program. Clinical location/ dates/ graduation all disclosed due to poor clinical 'rotation availability.' Fraudulent clinical hours that got the school "fired" from a clinical site. However, the class prior graduated the 'program.' Not sure about NCLEX passage. No campus Dean since they quit or left. Day care for pediatric rotation.. possible school "simulation" on campus or day care for "mother/baby." Very stressful situation. When a student asked about the prospective graduation date we were told "Expect the worst." As a current student, I'm concerned about the authentication of my licensure. read more

I started at Carrington early in in 2019 and finished off my first program as a Certified Dental Assistant that same year. I then proceeded to do my general-ed / pre requisities for the dental hygiene program and fast forward to recently, just a couple weeks ago I wrapped up the Dental Hygiene Program. The dental hygiene program has brought an abundance of knowledge and experiences that I'll get to use every day in my day to day. The clinical and curriculum staff has made the whole experience feel like home to myself and my classmates. They have always been very helpful, understanding, patient, met everyone's needs and they were also always open to suggestions. Attending Carrington College in San Jose, CA is the best decision that I've ever made in my life. I have been attending Carrington for over 2 years now, I graduated from the Dental Assisting program in 2022, I am currently enrolled into the Dental Assisting Certificate program, and will be pursuing Dental Hygiene at Carrington College. What I really appreciate and enjoy about Carrington College is the structure and organization; as a student, it can be really difficult to apply for classes, financial aide, and for the right program, but Carrington College's staff and employees really has that all covered. Lauren Hansen, Dena Asefi, and Sierra Gehrke, all have been extremely helpful assisting me with making sure that I was fully enrolled into the program and that I got all my prerequisite classes. What I really like is that Carrington College is that it has a set schedule of the classes already planned out for you for the whole year, there's no need to apply for individual classes and hope that you get in, or get put on the waiting list. Financial Aide Bernadette Marron helped me apply for FAFSA financial aide and broke down all the costs; because of her help, I didn't have to worry about any of the finances and costs. Ms. Deja, the front desk receptionist is always extremely nice, professional, and helpful; I lost my ID so many times, but she was able to replace my old one with a new one in minutes! The professors at Carrington College are the best out there. All the professors are well educated with their subject to teach, experts in their field of study, and are very fair. Professor Farbod, Professor La, Professor Ghebreab, Professor Sam Leung, are all great professors that really care for their students. If you are looking for something that allows you to excel, master, and help you start your career, Carrington College is the place you need to go. read more

If I could give zero stars I would. Since that isn't a choice 1 star will have to work. I'm currently in my last module and have had 3 instructors in the span of 1 month. It so inconsistent and they basically read off the slides and give us little to no effort. They will send us home if we don't have the correct scrubs but, they can come in sweats and crocs. We have been complaining about the inconsistency but we aren't being heard. After several visits, I think my dental hygienist Goldie deserves at least four stars. She keeps me in the loop as does her instructors, her hands-on on seems more experienced than a student but she insists she is not anything more, and the receptionist is prompt when I arrive. I have a deep cleaning, x-rays, periodontal consult, and soon a temp filling, all at no charge, unlike my time at the dental school of the SF campus of UoP. With the soon-to-be temp filling comes the warning that I may still need a dentist, so I will apply to the UCSF dental school. Very happy with the Temp Filling, there much less discomfort. read more

I went to school just to find out I had been dropped without prior notice and that I would have to wait until the next semester to go back.... I never went back. I decided to take advantage of the pandemic. I started thinking of seeing the positive side during such a trying time. I made the call on or about Aug. 3, 2020 & started my 1st day on or about Aug. 7, 2020. I have always known where I wanted to land my career this was a stepping stone to get there. The hybrid method was right up my alley. As I was still fortunate to work full time I was able to complete all my work and not feel so drained. My instructors Ashley Throwell & Jenny Mandracchia were the most amazing dynamic duo of I've ever seen a team like that!!! They made sure all of us were set to go and completed successfully. They were very empathetic as well as motivational speakers. I must say going into my externship was a breeze and getting hired on directly after externship was so gratifying and rewarding for being able to do such in a time like this. Thank you!! read more

I graduated from Carrington a year ago from the Dental Hygiene program. Unfortunatly while I was attending I did not have Tara Clor as my program director. I did however have her as my junior cooridnator and learned so much from her. Now that she is program director, I hear, finally, the program is shaping out to be a great hygiene school to attend. Under Tara Clors guidence, this school has and will continue to make you a very strong clinician. You will learn so much. My only advice is, never doubt yourself and your abilities. Tara Clor taught me to have confidence in my self and to use my confidence to be a great clinicians. Due to her guidance, I am able to educate patients on oral hygiene and give them a positive experience. All the people that works there are very nice and friendly during the process of signing up and once committed all that get thrown out the window! I was in school for 2 months for vet tech and left because no one will care about your concerns and your education, and plus your not really learning anything so I asked Melissa Ryan (campus director) for a refund but won't refund due to the fact that I didn't let them know my concern right away. Do not go to this school! Trust me! San Jose, CA location was my worst experience/interaction I've EVER had with a school. Jeanelle Magazu was completely disrespectful, judgmental, rude, and made assumptions about me when I was accepted into the surgery program. She made assumptions on her personal opinion about me that should have had her FIRED, or even put in JAIL! But instead they took her personal opinion of me and took back my acceptance letter to the program and my reaction was, "Are you fucking kidding me" as I was moving from out of state to do this program and she told me the week before the start date, then when I said that she claimed that I was attacking her. Mind-blown with the amount of hate and disrespect this woman has while working for such an expensive school. She doesn't even know me either, she met me once at the orientation. I asked to talk to her boss and she was much nicer but probably just as judgmental and fake to your face, she acted like she was going to help me straighten things out and get me in on the next start date, she said I'll look into it and call you back. She NEVER called me back and she won't take my phone calls. This school needs new employees that actually want to see people succeed in life.
