I love this yoga. I have practiced for nearly 2 years and think everything about bikram yoga is wonderful. Whenever I travel I like to take advantage of trying new Bikram studios and I was pleased to find one in Albuquerque. I went to the 6am class and upon walking in the door, the male teacher greeted me with a 'sorry our heat is broken.' Not 'hi' or 'welcome' but a warning of what was to come. Bikram yoga without heat is like ice skating in August. The studio was clean and I imagine that if everything were in proper working condition then it would be a great studio but I would advise that the teachers at the front desk work on a better way of greeting their students. read more

Bikram yoga is the same everywhere you go. 26 poses, 2 sets each, 105 degrees Fahrenheit. I was in Albuquerque for a family reunion and managed to have time to attend one session while I was there. I chose this location simply because of its proximity to my grandmother's house. $15 for a drop in class, $1 each for towel and mat rentals. There's a $20 introductory offer for new students--if you choose to sign up for this you can attend as many classes as you want in 10 consecutive days. I went to a 9am class on a Saturday morning. It was packed. I ended up close to one wall, which made for some awkward maneuvering at times. The instructor teaching the class I attended was Jeanette. She likes to tell stories and encourage class interaction; to what end I don't know. I suppose she thinks it makes the time pass faster, but I'd rather concentrate more on getting the poses right than have to sing "Happy Birthday" to a fellow yogi while contorting my body in all sorts of weird directions. I think the climate in which you do Bikram can have a great impact on your flexibility and stamina. The lack of humidity made the heat in the room more tolerable than the that of the studio I go to in Baltimore. And surprisingly, I didn't really feel any effect of the elevation. read more

I was a complete novice at Bikram Yoga. I found this studio through a friend and I decided to take a class. The studio itself is very clean and very well decorated. It seemed to radiate a general sense of serenity. As a novice I got a very good introduction to what was going to be a challenging 90 minute class. Jeanette and her team were very loving and helpful and gave me strong support and encouragement throughout the session. Transformative! They say there's a first time for everything, and my first Bikram class was the first time I've ever left a yoga studio completely pissed off. If you like the idea of Communist China, you'll love Bikram yoga. The same sequence at every class, black lines of duct tape on the carpet (seriously? carpet?) telling you where to line up your mat, assigned water breaks and dictated breathing technique based on nothing more than personal opinion, and an instructor that barks orders, insists you do the exact pose she is barking (showing no modifications), encourages pushing poses to the point of pain (even for the back and neck), and doesn't take into consideration individual preferences or physical limitations. Harsh fluorescent lighting and no music seal the deal as the worst "yoga" experience I've ever had. While this was my first Bikram yoga class, it was not my first yoga or hot yoga class. I've been practicing yoga on and off for about 13 years, and I find it to not only be a great physical workout but also an intensely centering, spiritual experience. I feel so fortunate to have taken classes with some unbelievable instructors at studios all over Santa Monica, Venice, West LA and at Equinox in Marina Del Rey. The Bikram brand violates pretty much every concept of yoga I have ever read, been taught, and experienced and certainly, everything that I value about yoga. As a medical student, I am shocked that Jeanette thinks she is qualified to take a room full of people and instruct them all to do the same thing and tell them that it's okay to bend their necks and backs to the point that it causes pain, and I cannot imagine how much malpractice insurance I would need in order to do something that reckless. The prescribed water breaks are just about the most ridiculous antic I can imagine in an athletic setting. I thought we learned through the summer deaths of high school football players, circa 1996, what happens when we withhold water from athletes. FYI: Increased body heat consumes more water to maintain regular bodily functions. This is true when you have fever, when you're in a hot environment, or exercising. A decrease in hydration affects the body's ability to function optimally, not the least of which is mental function, which I'm imagining might be part of the Communist China plan. If Bikram was your first yoga experience and you hated it, please don't give up. This is NOT yoga; Yoga is wonderful, strengthening, and healing! This is a hot boot camp using yoga poses and calling itself yoga. If you decide to try Bikram, please listen to your body and not the instructor. Dangerous things are being encouraged in this studio, and my advice is to nama-STAY-away. **As a side note and to qualify my physical fitness level and experience, I've run a full marathon, a handfuls of halves, completed a half-ironman, taken TRX, Indo-Row, and Shockwave classes, done Master's swimming, was a Water Safety Instructor, Certified Small Craft Instructor, and am a recently Schwinn Certified Spin Instructor. I want to be clear that difficulty of the workout is not my complaint.** read more

I've been taking Bikram Yoga classes for the past 11 years, and I'm happy to report this studio is the real deal. Compassionate, knowledgeable teachers who really care about the students. BYA has a warm and friendly community feel, with many students who practice at least 4 times a week, so are supportive and kind to new folks. I've been going to class here for 9 months now and am now in the best shape of my life. Everyday, my body's response to this challenging sequence of 26 postures is different - some days it's really tough and I find myself laying out to recover enough to keep going. A couple of times I had to just leave. Other days, OMG, I walk out of there with a HUGE natural high. I find all the the regular instructors to be well trained and deeply concerned with their student's progress and well-being, and a lot of them I'm growing to like a lot. Having said that, everyone in this, or any other yoga class, should take responsibility for listening to their own body and don't over-do it. This practice attracts some type-A personalities and yes, you can hurt yourself if you leave your judgement at the door. The studio itself is OK, nothing special. I gather the West Side studio, owned by the same folks, is quite beautiful. When I started I read quite a lot about Bikram and I'm not pleased that I'm adding to his already obscene wealth. He doesn't seem like a good person. But his sequence works. I also read many health warnings about this, other hot yoga, and for that matter, yoga in general. You should arm yourself with this knowledge, read the FAQs on the studio's website and take responsibility for your own well being. If you do that I can highly recommend this practice and this studio. read more

This studio was my third attempt to enjoy hot yoga, and it turned out that the third time is indeed the charm! At other studios, I spent half the class wondering how to get into the pose, and by the time I figured it out, they were already on to the next thing. For a relatively unseasoned yogi, I found this studio incredibly welcoming and affirming. The instructor always welcomes anyone taking the class for the first time and shares how to pace onself through the class. I love that there are a variety of body types, ages, and ability in each class that I've gone to and everyone is accepted for where they are in their practice. Each instructor that I have had brings their own unique personality to the class but still sticks to the same format, which I find quite comforting. I'm a distance runner, and there are certain poses I know I don't want to push too deeply in due to the possibility of injury. I've never felt pressured to go deeper than I can with correct form, and I appreciate that. I highly recommend this studio. I especially love the 6 am classes and the affordable rate. It's an incredible way to start the day! read more

HORRIBLE!! The owners are rude, deceitful, and dishonest. The childcare is terrible. The room used for childcare is also used as a dirty yoga mat locker, and is about 8ft x 8ft. Too small, dirty, and horrible babysitter. My friend's daughter was left in a soiled pull up for 90 minutes, because the babysitter refused to take her to the restroom when she asked. She also accused her children of misbehaving and tearing her shirt, even though she clearly had holes in her shirt before class. They have horrible bookkeeping practices, and lost track of my payments, demanding that I repay. I do not recommend this yoga studio to anybody- they do not promote peace or happiness. Everything I have ever learned about yoga is not portrayed in this terrible yoga studio. read more

I was visiting Albuquerque for a few days and immediately sought to keep up the Bikram Yoga practice I've been developing back home in Brooklyn over the past three years now. I found Bikram Yoga ABQ, and I am so glad I did. I was was tremendously impressed with the studio --clean, attractive, and well run. I had classes with Jolene, James and Zia, all of whom were welcoming, friendly and outstanding instructors who went beyond the standard Bikram script to provide helpful verbal adjustments, encouragement and humor. It was particularly cool when these instructors practiced in class during hours they were not teaching. This spoke volumes of their loyalty to the practice and the studio, and it was empowering to see these teachers sweat and stretch and hold poses alongside their students. I also found the participants particularly outgoing, taking time to welcome me to the space. When I'm back in ABQ, I'll definitely return. Thanks everyone! Namaste. read more

I absolutely love Bikram Yoga!! It is amazing and totally compliments all types of training. However, I will never attend another class at this studio as long as I live. I would not recommend this studio to anyone I know. I would rather be without Bikram yoga than give the owner of this studio another dime of my money. She is greedy and selfish and makes promises she cannot keep. I was promised a certain deal when I signed up only to have her change her mind later. She said "Dont worry I'll take care of you." She never did. Then she proceeded to offer the same deal I was offered to all the "new" customers. I was told I would receive a credit for every friend I referred. I referred at least ten people but never saw a credit and when I asked about it she said "oh were not doing that anymore". I completed the 30 day challenge and practically had to beg and plead for my t-shirt I was promised. I was a member for several months spending $130 a month but finally cancelled on principle. I have no problem paying that price to be a member but I do have a problem with supporting greedy business owners that don't take care of and appreciate their customers. Jeanette is a horrible business woman and I will never ever attend either of her studios as long as she is the owner. The rest of the staff is fabulous! They are friendly, pleasant and great at what they do. It's too bad they work for an awful greedy person. read more
