I'm probably a little biased since as a UM alum, I have many fond memories of good times at this theater. Ok yes, there's no concession stand and no reclining fancy seats like in theaters today. But I do think the Cosford deserves recognition for bringing indie, small films you wouldn't have access to anywhere else in Miami. The people who work to support the theater are clearly very passionate about films. And the special programs they have are fantastic - I watched a movie with Gloria Estefan and then heard about the special meaning it had to her! You don't get that kind of experience everywhere! Also highly recommend any of the film festivals they bring. Sometimes for opening nights, there's even small receptions afterwards with small bites and music in an intimate setting. The Cosford Cinema at the University of Miami is one of a few places weher you can still see foreign films and films with limited releases. Tickets are typically $10 for adults, $8 for seniors, children, and UM alumni, and free for current UM students, making it a cheaper alternative to most theaters in the area. They also tend to run a lot of special programs, such as all of the nominated short films for the Oscars each year, which they break up into animated, live action, and documentary screenings. Cosford also runs a lot of films with local ties before they make it to the chain theaters (if they even do), such as Moonlight and Florida Project. It's a great place to see movies that are critically acclaimed but don't have the wide distribution of Hollywood blockbusters. The theater itself has just one screen and no concessions, though the university has vending machines outside. The seating is traditional and slightly sloped, so the seats aren't as comfy as newer theaters that have rocking and reclining seats, movable armrests, or stadium seating so tall people don't block your view. The rows are spacious, though, with a decent amount of room between your seat and the next row. Also, the theater does not have its own restrooms, but there are university restrooms just below it. If you're unfamiliar with the campus, the best way to get there is to enter the parking lot at Campo Sano and Brunson. Park as close as you can to the Dooley Memorial Classroom Building. The theater is located on the second floor of the Memorial Building, right in the middle of the long, narrow building. Overall, the Cosford Cinema is a bit dated, but continues to be a valuable part of the community by offering reasonably priced tickets to many films you might not be able to see at other theaters. read more

This is a movie theater located on the University of Miami Coral Gables campus. It is easy to get here if you were a student of this school but otherwise most people don't know that it even exists or how to find it. I've come here several times because they've shown good foreign and indie movies. The theater itself it's at least 30 years old and has had the same seats as it did the first day it opened. There is no concession stand, there are only vending machines across the ticket booth. The parking is free and it is usually not crowded. I like it because it's close to home, there are never lines and easy to get in and out of. However it does need to be updated and offer the option to buy the tickets online. read more

Tragically, Miami is not considered a major market for indies and foreign films. This might be because we basically only have 1 and a half indie movie theaters and this is the half. On weekends you can catch a good array of international and independent flicks, usually obscure but nonetheless worthwhile. It's on the UM campus so there is plenty of parking on the weekends. It's a simple, no frills space. No multi-plex stadium seating with long lines at the concession stand and brimming with teens. Instead it's usually quiet, there are students and folks from the area, just catching a movie on a slow weekend. And sometimes that's all anyone really wants or needs. I would love to one day see this half turn into a full blown art house cinema but until then I love it's sleepy, quiet feel on a Saturday afternoon, when you can stroll across campus and take a deep breath free of hustle and bustle. read more

I am not a movie person and I do not like to go to the movie theaters. But I came here to watch a documentary on ESPN's 30 for 30 "The Two Escobars" because it has to do with soccer and drugs. I guess this is the only theatre nearby that shows foreign and independent films, so they have that advantage over other theaters. Also, it was free entrance and they even had a stand outside with free popcorn, soda, chips and candy that we can bring INSIDE the theater. It's open to the public, so no need to worry about being surrounded by UM students only. read more

Cosford is a nice little one screen theater tucked away in one of the original 1960s bldgs. at University of Miami (Memorial Bldg.) Along with Tower Theater on 8th street (run by Miami-Dade College) it's a college run theater that while showing foreign, domestic & independent films, is also home to a film lectures series. The Miami International Film Festival and in Spring the 'Canes Film Festival (Hurricanes). It's where students from the School of Communications show their work. Just a great time for all with all types of genre. While the building has much to be desired and in need of improvements (Mech. system kicks loud at start and at times is a distraction) the UM campus is impressive to walk before or after a movie. Cosford is a cozy 200 seat space with a 35 mm projector. It opens to public on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. During the weekday (Thursdays i think) we were able to catch previous major released films for free. Check the website for schedule. Tix are $8.00 Parking in Commuter Lots is free after 4:00pm weekdays and free on weekends. read more

It's hard enough to navigate the University of Miami campus when you're not a student, and don't have a map. To make matters worse, you won't find the theater pointed out on the campus map, which is what kept me and my friend from wanting to deal with the stress of coming here. Ask UM students on campus and some will incredulously say "there is a movie theater on campus?" At one point, I accessed the cubicles of the teaching staff in the communications department (the theater claims to be in the communications building, so I thought this would be a logical step), and the teacher said she had no idea where the theater was located. Oooo...kay... If that's not bad enough, look at the address that the GPS gives you and the address listed on Yelp for this theater -- completely different. The correct address, by the way, is the one programmed into the GPS (5030 Brunson Drive), but then, you have to actually enter the building next to the 5030 building, which is a beige building with the name "Oscar Dooly." Confusing enough for you? No signs in the parking lot indicate there is a movie theater, no signs on Campo Sano Drive, nothing would tell you there is a movie theater hidden on campus, if someone had not told you about it. My question is, why? We complain about the lack of culture in this city, but then no effort is made to attract people to cultural facilities, like this theater, by promoting the place and placing signage around. Yes, I am upset! This place has so much potential, and this is an educational institution, but it's as if no one cares to put an end to the idiocracy we are becoming. Art does imitate life sometimes, doesn't it? Anyway, after walking all around campus looking for students to ask and having no luck with the few I encountered (this was on a Sunday, after all), I was sweaty and frustrated, as I had arrived in time for the showing, but because of a lack of signage, I was going to be late to my movie. I finally found someone standing outside that told me that it's the building next to the 5030 Brunson building, and I went up the steps (the theater is on the second floor). It is very simple -- a plexiglass window separates you from the clerk, and you order your tickets, and go inside. The theater does not sell any concessions by the way, and as if the cinema gods wanted to frustrate me further, the vending machines outside did not work. Not the one selling water, the one selling candy or snacks, nor the one selling soda. None. Again, this was frustrating and I just rolled my eyes at the course of events. If you're not going to sell concessions inside, at least have the vending machines working. They say you cannot bring outside food and drinks inside, but you're sort of forced to when you don't have other options. Again, as I stated, this theater has a lot of potential. They play great independent and foreign films, as well as classic films, they are in a safe college campus, and in a pretty central location for Miami-Dade residents all over, but they need to do a better job of advertising and placing signs around campus, including one on the actual railing of the building's second floor so people know the theater is there. C'mon, UM! You are a private university. You can afford to make a little banner that can hang and says "COSFORD CINEMA HERE" so people from the parking lot can see where to go. It isn't until you go up the steps and walk along toward the inside of the second floor, and look to the side by the ticket window wall that you finally see a sign that says "Cosford Cinema." Sorry, but that is not good enough, especially when people don't know to go up the second floor, or the building they're supposed to locate, in the first place. Calling their phone number will lead you to an automated message with no option to reach an operator to ask for directions, in case you were going to suggest that to me. By the way, the French movie I saw, Microbe & Gasoline, was excellent, despite missing a good 10 minutes of the film. Check it out while you can. read more

I LOVE this theater! Its kind of hard to find if you don't go to UM but totally worth a visit. I think it is the only digital projection theater in Miami which was pretty cool seeing. This is also a GREAT spot for foreign films or independent films, also special screenings (Saw the ESPN 30 for 30 "The U" here). This was also the ONLY theater in Miami that had the Che movie and both parts at that which took balls in this city. Downside is that there is no food or drink allowed inside but that was fine with me. read more

Watched Moonlight at Bill Cosford Cinema at University of Miami on a Saturday evening. There were no concessions set up and the vending machines were not calling me, so just a movie and no snacks. Quality Bill Cosford Cinema is a surprisingly nice theater that is hidden away on the University of Miami campus. The theater plays a mix of independent movies, current award winners, and cult classics. It is very much a college arts theater and provides a comfortable experience for watching great movies. Quantity As I walked into the theater I was honestly surprised how large it was. It was close to the same size as a modern theater, except it was one level. All the seats still provide a decent view of the screen, so long as the person in front of you is not too tall. Even for a more popular movie with free tickets, there were still plenty of seats available. Value Although the theater does sell tickets for some events, they also have lots of free screenings. It appeared like during the school year they hold one or two free screenings a week. Ambiance Bill Cosford Cinema is located within the University of Miami Coral Gables campus. Even after spending several years on campus, I never heard of it. It is not something that really stands out as there are no signs and it isn't even located on the first floor. Towards the northern end of campus near the school of engineering and the school of communication is a long row of classrooms. On the second floor you will find a weird shaped classroom, that turns out to be a movie theater. They have a few movie posters downstairs to provide a clue, but not much more than that. The theater is much larger and nicer than I expected. Comfortable seats, a big screen, and a quality system. Also, it was not freezing cold like so many other theaters and classrooms on campus. Crowd It was a Saturday night, but because of the popularity of the movie it drew a good sized crowd. Expect mostly undergraduate students, unsurprising for a college campus. But there was still a decent contingency of non-students confused if they are even allowed to watch the free showing. Service My complaints would be the hidden nature of the theater and the fact that no concessions were set up. Especially at a free screening, someone should have been selling popcorn or candy to raise money. A movie without drinks or snacks is a sad experience. Parking The screenings are usually at night or on the weekend and most of the campus parking is free at those time. Aim towards the top of campus and the red lot, near Doctor's Hospital, for the shortest walk. Extra I can never complain too much about a free movie screening, especially for a new movie. However, Cosford Cinema does not have concessions or drinks, which is a huge issue for me. It is almost an incomplete experience without popcorn at your side. Plus it also feels like a missed fundraising opportunity for students. read more

However, there are times when a movie theater may have a special aura, that special touch of admiration, gusto, and pleasure you get from visiting such a theater. Whenever I visit the Bill Cosford Cinema, I always get that feeling-- there is just something magical about this place that makes me wanting more. I was first introduced to the Bill Cosford Cinema when I was a student at the University of Miami. Since I grew up being a fan of all things free, I came here most of my Wednesday evenings with friends to watch the latest blockbuster fan flicks that were sponsored by UMiami's student programming board, Hurricane Productions. I saw so many films here in this not-so-crowded theater that this venue earned a special place in my UM life. Come a few years later, I still come here to watch independent films that I would not be able to find anywhere else. As a few Yelpers already pointed out, the independent movie theaters in Miami are slim-pickings, so I am just glad we have Cosford in our community. Besides the movies, the staff is friendly, and I am always able to find a seat here. All movies are always free for students, so make sure you always have your Cane Card in hand when visiting this place. read more

Awesome little theater.. Great place to see independent films and some all time classic movies. For Halloween they are screening some great seasonal movies including "The Lost Boys". Remember those hunks when they were young??? I just saw an independent film titled "Trouble the Water", an amazing story about Katrina survivors in New Orleans. A must see movie for everyone. The theater has easy access once you are in the UM campus. Free parking in the evenings and a soda and candy machine right outside the theater. NO food or drinks inside though. read more

Part of the UM Communications complex, Bill Cosford has by far the best screen and seating in all of Miami's independent theaters. The selection has not been as great as it was before (they lost the rights to many of the classic films in their archive), but many great films can be seen here. read more

though i haven't been in a few years, i was obsessed with cosford cinema when i went to the university of miami. i'd go to every new show. they usually get a new one every week. mostly foreign and independant (yea!) they also get directors sometimes to come talk. miami could use a few more theatres like this. go UM for bringing something a little more cultural than football to miami! read more
