This AMC remains a busy spot in the empty Sunset Place. I wish the revitalization efforts were successful but AMC remains a staple in the South Miami community. I've watched plenty of films here throughout decades but recently visited the theater again and it's still holding up well. Theaters are clean, staff are friendly, lots of drink and food options. The chairs are comfortable, the sound system is great, as are the screens. Would definitely come back again soon!

Sunset Place is unfortunately in decline but AMC is still kicking! One of the few places around with IMAX! Went recently for the Stranger Things event and it was awesome. Staff is always so friendly and helpful.

This is a great movie theater for a date night or a girls' night out. Parking is easily accessible but the trek to the theater is fine if you need to get your steps in. My best friend and I came here to watch It Ends With Us and it was pleasant, I just wish the theater had another drink station closer to the auditoriums in the back

I don't go to the movies that often but I got tickets through a friend so it was a great incentive to stop by this theater. I had not been to Sunset place in a long time so was a little surprised that most stores and restaurants have closed down! The mall used to be full during the weekends but I was there on a Saturday and it was almost empty (which was great for finding parking) The theater is located on the 3rd floor, easy to find once you are at the mall. I enjoyed my time there, seats were spacious, not too crowded, clean restrooms and good movie selection. Sad to see the sunset place mall gone but it sounds like they will be bringing more retail opportunities probably on top of hotel/residences.

Sunset place is a bit of a ghost town but the actual theater was nice the seats are spacious and recline all the way back

Huge location. I love and can't say enough about the variety of movies. Everything from big blockbusters, independent, foreign, documentaries, anime, etc. Only one ticket taker while 2 employees without customers at the box office refusing to scan codes to let me in took off one star.

This is a review of the movie theater and not Sunset place mall because let's be honest the mall is a shadow of its former self. A sad but common story of a lot of malls nowadays. Now on to the theater phenomenal experience the employees were friendly, courteous and helpful. The consession stand had a wide variety of snacks and food items they have coke a cola beverages and a full bar. Theater screen was a decent size for a normal theater, the seats were comfortable, the audio was great and it was clean overall a great experience thank you for renewing my faith in movie theaters after my last horrible experience at the regal in Kendall I almost gave up on going out to watch at movie theaters in general. Guess it makes a difference on who runs the movie theater and AMC theaters treated me right and I look forward to my next visit at this location or one of the many others since it is only a matter of time until Sunset place is no more.

It had been a while since I'd gone to the Sunset Place Theater, and I was pleasantly surprised... I think it may have had a renewal of some sort: the seating is nice, the audio is terrific, the image is crisp... and it is surprisingly clean for a movie theater... The staff is helpful, the snack stand... well, the snack stand is as in every movie theater now: expensive for what it is, but also gets cut to a reasonable price if you join the loyalty club and go by its offers, so that works well. It is a pity that the Sunset Place Mall is basically a ghost town, but all around the area there are more than enough places to make a night out of it, so just grab dinner anywhere else, and head back to your choice of pop-corn movie. Even the temperature is nice! (not too cold, not too warm).

I only gave it 3 stars as the customer service was just not up to expectations. The bar man was friendly, but besides that, the concession people were not great. The concession has the usual: hot dogs, popcorn, icee, etc. I think what knocked a star off my review was the costumer service. First I asked the attendant if the nacho cheese was spicy, he assured me it wasn't and gave me the slightest attitude. When he brought it over I quickly read the ingredients and there it was, Jalapeño (I can't have that for health reasons). Then after we paid for the icee he told us it was not ready, he said it would be 5 min... it was 15. No apologies or anything. We asked if someone could bring it since our movie was starting, and there were 5 of them behind the counter and no line, he said no. Sigh. Anyways, the theater itself was lovely but the experience at the concession stand deflated the mood. And having to miss part of the movie to go out and get the icee, was disappointing.

This is the Coconut Grove Playhouse. It was once the epicenter of the Miami theater scene. It opened on January 3, 1927 as part of the Paramount movie theater with a D.W. production of Satan of Sorrows. The 1,130 seat theater was designed by architect Richard Kiehnel of Kiehnel and Elliott. It was built by Miami local realtors Irving J. Thomas and Fin L. Pierce. Albert Peacock served as the contractor. The building originally had seven stores on the first floor, ten offices, on the second floor, and a third story of apartments. It was the second movie theatre on the east coast of Florida to be air conditioned. It also had the largest Wurlitzer organ in the United States. Although now blue, the original color of the building was sienna. In the 1930's the theater closed due to the Florida land boom bust, an economic downturn caused by two hurricanes and the Great Depression. During WWII the theater found new purpose as a school to train Air Force navigators. After the war the building was again closed until 1955 when George Engle, an oilman spent one million dollars on the theater to remodel it to accommodate the Coconut Grove Playhouse, Miami's first live theater. The renovated theater reopened on January 3, 1956, with the U.S. premiere of Samuel Beckett's existential play, Waiting for Godot starring Bert Lahr and Tom Ewell. Financial success eluded Engle in the ensuing years and the theater again closed in 1960. Producer Zev Buffman bought the building in March 1966 for more than $1 million. In 1970, former actor Eddie Bracken and his associates purchased the building. When Bracken's group failed to pay its debts, the Playhouse was sold at auction at the county courthouse. Arthur Cantor and Robert Fishko purchased the theater, and opened it for the 1971-72 winter season. Cantor and Fishko sold their interests in 1977. In 1980 the State of Florida became the owners. In 2004 the title was transferred to the Coconut Grove Playhouse LLC Inc. Through the years many famous people have performed at the theater including Jessica Tandy, Tallulah Bankhead, Carol Channing, Liza Minnelli, Linda Lavin, Bea Arthur, George C. Scott, Colleen Dewhurst, and Ethel Merman. On November 22, 1996, the Late Show with David Letterman originated from the theater. In 2005 the Coconut Grove Playhouse was designated historic by the City of Miami's Historic and Environmental Preservation Board. Four million dollars in debt, the theater abruptly closed in 2006. It has not been used since. In 2013 The Actors Playhouse in Coral Gables and the University of Miami were able to get inside and rescue many of the items including costumes, playbills, documents, and posters. The items are being stored at the University of Miami. The Playhouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2018. It is so sad to see this majestic building with so much history shuttered. A master plan to renovate the theater was approved by Miami's Environmental and Historic Board on April 4, 2017 but it was appealed. Since then nothing has been done as the building is broken into by vagrants and allowed to rot. Miami has so many beautifully preserved historic buildings. I have faith that they will get it together eventually.
