The Bakers Table - Interior of the cafe

Wow! We learned about The Baker's Table on a Talgarth Mill brochure left at our AirBnB in Penderyn,…read moreon the other side of Brecon Beacons park... We were heading back to London the next day, and at first thought "too bad this isn't on our way home," but the next morning decided we wanted to see more of the park anyway, as well as a few other points north before our weeklong adventure adjourned... What a pleasure it was to stop here on that dreary morning! When we arrived around 10:30am, the whole place was bustling with what turned out to be a tour group of retirees, about to tour the historic adjacent mill. The setup is counter service style: order your items, take your number and choose a table (indoors or outdoors). Most of the indoor tables overlook the brook running through the mill; the outdoor tables are in the courtyard of the mill buildings. They don't have a true breakfast, per se, but they have teas, coffee/espresso drinks, breads, cakes and cookies available all day, most of which are made using grains locally harvested and milled right there. There are some gluten free options available as well. At 11:30, their lunch menu is available and features sandwiches, soup and salads, all made from locally sourced, processed and grown Welsh foods. We were still finishing up our morning coffee, enjoying the chill vibe of the place (especially after the tour group moved on - haha!) by the time lunch was available, so we decided to stick around a little longer and try it out too! After much deliberation about how to best sample their offerings (everything sounded AMAZING), we opted for a soup/sandwich combo with the ham, cheese & mustard sandwich and fresh garden pea and mint soup, along with a "board" that included salad, two cheeses, local ham, an apple, fresh cherry tomatoes, house chutney and fresh bread. So simple, but so delicious!! We ate it ALL... I can't recommend enough the sheer quality of this real, simple but delicious local food. Other items to note: Credit cards require a £10 minimum charge. Locally made gifts and gourmet food items are available for purchase. Restroom entrance is in the courtyard, but there are public toilets in the adjacent building, facing the street as well. Free Wi-Fi. Check out the Talgarth Mill Craft Shop next door if you are looking for locally made Welsh treasures to take home. Free parking (and recycling drop-off) is available a couple of short blocks away, just off the highway. The Talgarth visitor's centre across the street is there for all kinds of information about the area, or, if you'd just like to converse with the friendly locals.

Surrounded by boutique shops, other cafes and a great looking cheese shop, it's out of the way and easy to miss. It might, however, be the best place in the whole town to get brunch. After walking around Hereford for half an hour on a Saturday morning (it's a small place), we'd given up on finding somewhere decent to get breakfast. It was only by chance that we decided to take a shortcut back to the car that we ventured up one of the small alley ways off the square towards the cathedral that we found La Madeleine. The main room is small and is overlooked by the small kitchen at the back. Filled with a mix match of wooden chairs and tables, the dining room is comfortable and would be great place to meet up for breakfast or take a breather from shopping. The real draw is the small garden at the back. Secluded and lush, it's a brilliant hidden oasis in the middle of the town, and a perfect place to sit out. We both ordered eggs Benedict which was very good. Served with bacon as opposed to ham, and a slightly unusual, buttery hollandaise, it really hit the spot. Two eggs Benedict and two strong coffees came in under twenty quid. La Madeleine is open Monday through Saturday for breakfast and lunch, and is licensed. It loses a star only for not being open on Sunday when we wanted to come back with the rest of the family.

I came here to give them ONE star because, frankly, NO TOILET!…read more I believe than any place serving food and drinks shouldn't be allowed to operate without toilet facilities. The waitress was very apologetic, but that doesn't change the fact that NO TOILET was available on the premises. The waitress *cheerfully* told me they couldn't let me use the loo as I "would have to pass through the kitchen" (the kitchen being entirely OPEN to the restaurant; I could see the whole thing from where I stood, including the door to the lavatory I wasn't allowed to use) and suggested a hotel located a bit up the hill where I would be welcomed to use the loo. Right-o. What do you do if you're pregnant and need to go quite often? Or if you're elderly/disabled and don't really fancy leaving your meal behind to do a little bit of hiking (it's not next door, btw) on a full bladder? Or if your child has an "accident"? You leave your breakfast congealing on the table and do the walk of shame up the hill with your screaming, soiled kid in tow, to waste resources at someone else's business? Who thought that was an acceptable solution? Honeypie, I'm sitting on your establishment and putting money on your tills; you will offer me a freaking piss0ir or I will be offering my custom elsewhere - and if there's one thing Shrewsbury isn't short of are cafés and tearooms. Little rant over. Sorry. That said. I'll give another couple of stars for the absolutely STELLAR teacake I had there. Irritated due to the NO TOILET situation, I forgot to request for it to be brought already buttered and feared for the worst: tepid teacake + rock solid butter that would never melt. Ok, I did get the butter on the side, BUT the big, fat teacake I received was burning hot (literally, I couldn't even hold it), the butter was at the perfect temperature and there was *lots* of it. We managed to drench two sets of teacakes in butter using only half of one portion. All my thumbs up. My other friend ordered cake. She declared it "just ok". I didn't try, but I will say that even though the slice was so huge it was borderline comic, it wasn't so enticing looks wise. I *might* be a bit of a cake snob, yes, but I can usually tell if a cake is good just by looking at the texture. And those looked like hard polenta. A pity, since it's a (very) well served portion. And the coffee is great - as in, not bitter. Bitterness also absent from service; apart from that ludicrous suggestion, I was treated with kindness by a smiling staff. But shall I remind you again? NO. TOILET. Really.
