Apley Farm Shop opened its doors to the public on Thursday 31st March 2011 and features, as well as…read morethe farm shop itself, a café and a kids' playbarn. We decided to visit today to check out all three. We had been fortunate enough to be invited to a special pre-opening event at the playbarn a couple of weeks earlier, so we already had an idea what kind of thing to expect. We were not disappointed! As farm shops go, Apley raises the bar and sets a new standard. Housed in beautifully converted original farm buildings it's airy, spacious and very well laid out. I was responsible for trying to keep a sixteen month old in check, so wasn't able to take a close look at much of the produce on sale, but it's generally what you would expect from a high class delicatessen/farm shop, including some more unusual fare, like venison chorizo. Produce is generally locally sourced, including beef and game directly from Apley estate itself. I don't do cafés, as I much prefer pubs, but this café is going to be an exception to that rule. Simple offerings, such as sandwiches, quiches, ploughmans' and so on, but the quality is exceptional. There's a kids' section on the menu, which steers clear of the deep fried stodge you find in far too many places. As you would expect, there's a tempting array of cakes and other sweet treats that all looked good. There's a range of red and white wines as well as the usual teas, coffees and some very nice soft drinks. I would like to see bottled ales available and noticed that they sell a range of local ones from Hobsons and Woods in the shop. A bottle of Town Crier would have slipped down nicely today. The playbarn is currently the final piece in the jigsaw, although I believe that they plan to open a business centre here too. My wife is the expert on playbarns, having been to most of the local ones, but I gather this one is a little different to the rest. Kids' birthday parties are confined to separate, private rooms, which I think is a great idea. The seating area is therefore made up of comfy leather sofas with coffee tables and café style chairs and tables, all for grown ups, with complimentary newspapers and magazines provided. Coffee, tea, hot chocolate, soft drinks, ice cream and cakes are sold from the counter. Oh yes, the play section itself... well I enjoyed it, so it must be good! I'm pleased to see there's no ball pit, as I think these are just germ magnets. In summary, I hope nobody reads this review as we would like to keep the place a secret, thank you very much!

The best English Breakfast in the UK…read more In fact it won the Mirror Best Cafe in Britain award in 2006. This isnt just any old Truckers Cafe it also attracts Familys and local's for a good selection of hearty home cooked, great british Grub. Not only are the breakfasts well worth a try (be warned they are belly busters!) they also do a Fantastic Roast Dinner, which also comes with Chips if your extra hungry! It's all homemade, nothing out of the packet, the Gravy is like your mum makes and the Chips are good old fashioned cut potatoes and not frozen. The Decor isnt fancy or anything to shout home about, but with food as good as this it doesnt need to be its just big bulky tables and an assortment of odd chairs but it works! For Truckers its ideal, they have Shower facilities on site and a Huge Car Park and right next to a petrol station so you have everything you need for an overnight stay. Try it, you wont be dissapointed. Such great Value and Mega Size portions that'll make you want to go back every time you pass!

On the menu is everything from all day breakfasts to full roast dinners, of which there is a different one each day. There are usually two or three other mains and several old fashioned puddings. We have a toasted sandwich each time we visit, delicious and fast. The only down-side is their coffee. It is obviously instant and possibly poor quality but the food is fantastic.

Our group of four ventured off to Ludlow for their spring food festival. Not knowing what we would…read morefind there, and let's face it, being greedy, we decided to venture off to The Green Café. It came highly recommended by our host at the B&B we were staying. The café is adorable! They have outdoor seating, but it was a bit chilly and damp (what else is new?), so we opted for the cozy warmth of the indoors. It's a relatively small space- it probably seats 25 to 30 people. It's a popular place and it seemed the tables were constantly full (so make reservations). We ordered 4 entrées to share- 2 plates of Gnocchi (with Italian style pork, fennel and garlic sausage ragu, and a green salad); a beet salad with avocado and caramelized onions (which was A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!!) and to round things out, Tagliatelle (which had asparagus, tomato, anchovy, chili and green olive sauce). Everything was delicious. Continuing the theme of being indulgent (aka greedy), we followed that up with lemon polenta cake (with Greek yogurt) and their version of a pavlova. Both desserts are light and tasty! The Green Café did not disappoint! It was a stunning start to fantastic food weekend! Even though I am based 3.5 hours away in London, I will definitely be back and highly recommend that you venture to Ludlow for this very affordable and incredible restaurant!
