The Green Cafe must have one of the best settings for a food establishment anywhere in the UK, right next to the River Teme, adjacent to Dinham Bridge and to the back of Ludlow Castle. On the day we visited, it was bathed in glorious spring sunshine, people were queueing for snacks and drinks at the takeaway outlet, and others were just relaxing on the patio, which was the prime position on such a great day.
Inside seats around 25 people, and I'm very glad we booked, else I don't think we would have got a table. The menu is a constantly changing, largely making good use of what's in season. I went for a simple omelette with a dressed salad, just the right size for lunch, and full of flavour; all washed down with a rhubarb and apple drink, which was very refreshing. My wife went for the small penne pasta, with a simple tomato sauce, which we both agreed was a little bitter.
We just managed to time in right to try two of their famed cakes, the lemon yoghurt polenta cake and the coffee cake. The polenta cake, just out of the oven, was fantastic, light and flavoursome; the coffee cake tasted of coffee, which was a plus, but was exceptionally sweet. So all in all some dishes that were real winners and some that just didn't quite hit the mark.
However, with its idyllic setting next to the weir, and the concentration on lunches (two sittings 12-12.30 and 1.30), I'm sure its a place we'll return too. read more
