The first Island Water Sports was opened by Kirk Cottrell in 1978 in Pompano Beach. Less than a…read moreyear later they moved to Deerfield Beach where they sold surf clothing and surf boards. It quickly became known as "the" surf shop in Deerfield Beach. Business was good in the 1980's and they franchised to 26 stores. Unfortunately the 1990's were not as kind and the business took a hit. Kirk Cottrell leaned on his faith and in 5 years he was able to relaunch a more conservative business plan. In 1997 Cottrell and his family moved to South Africa to work as missionaries and start a Calvary Chapel. Sadly he lost his life in 2001 in a surfing accident. Island Water Sports is now run by Cottrell's son Cheyne and family. The Kirk Cottrell Pavilion in Deerfield Beach where Island Waters Sports has given free surf lessons to kids for years is named in his honor. My daughter used to enjoy the free surf lessons given by IWS with her friends when she was in elementary school and when her uncle gifted her his damaged surf board we took it to them to be fixed. They still have the Deerfield Beach location but when I was shopping in Delray I stumbled on this outpost across from the beach on Atlantic Avenue and I had to stop in to relive a few memories. Parking for this store is metered on the street. From the outside the store doesn't look very large but looks can be deceiving. As soon as you enter you can see that there are actually several rooms filled with clothing for men, women, and children, accessories, surfboards, skateboards, shoes, toys, tumblers, sunglasses, hats, and more. IWS has a rental business too. You can rent a surfboard all day for $45 or a stand up paddleboard for $60. An all day bicycle rental is $45 or an e bike for $75. They have a surf and skate camp for kids and private and group surf and stand up paddle board lessons. They still offer the free Saturday 7-9 AM all age, all level surf and paddleboard lessons with equipment provided. They can even give lessons at your special private event or birthday party. The girls working were so sweet. They were on hand to help and we had a nice chat. IWS is an iconic family owned business and they have given so much to the community. I am glad to see they are are still inspiring the next generation of surfers and skate boarders who love the outdoors as much as Kirk did.

It is one of the few non food vendors at the market. Owner Ryan Heavyside decided to partner with Delray Market because "Down here it's hard to come by to just, you know, put in a shop somewhere, so when they came to us, we felt blessed that we could do that." Nomad sells clothing for men, women, and children, and accessories like hats, sunglasses, sandals, and towels. You can schedule surf lessons with them for $40 and hour and they also rent surf boards for $25 a half day and $35 for a full day. They also rent skim and boogie boards. On the day I visited they were giving away a custom surfboard in conjunction with the opening of the market. This is the sweetest little surf shop. They are the perfect fit since the beach is just a mile away. Come out and support Florida's brand new largest food hall and this great local business.

I rarely leave negative reviews, but this experience deserves to be shared…read more One employee with such a poor attitude can drive a business into the ground. Customer service is one of the most important parts of any business, and unfortunately, this employee completely failed in that regard. According to my refund receipt, the cashier who handled this entire interaction was Shawn. I have been a customer before, and my previous experiences were great. On one visit, I was helped by a young man from Colombia, and on another visit by a young woman from a Uruguayan family. Both were friendly, professional, and made me feel welcome. That is why this experience was so disappointing. First, I arrived at the store around 1:20 PM, and it was closed. I waited approximately 15 minutes before leaving. There was no sign explaining why the store was closed, and the door still indicated "Open." It was very confusing and unprofessional. I came back about an hour later, and the store was finally open. I mentioned to Shawn that I had been there earlier and asked why the store had been closed. His response was simply, "Because it was closed." Then he said he had been in the bathroom. After that, I politely asked him if he could show me the SATIVA pre-rolls. Instead of helping me, he pointed from behind the cash register with his finger and said, "Over there." I asked again if he could please show me the SATIVA pre-rolls, and once again he made the same gesture without even looking at me, while staring at his cell phone. It was obvious that he had no interest in helping customers. I finally pointed and said, "I'll take one of those." I then asked him if he was new because I had never seen him before. In a sarcastic tone, he replied, "I've never seen you either, and I've been working here for a long time." I paid $16.05 for a single pre-roll and received some of the worst customer service I've experienced. When I got home, I realized Shawn had given me the wrong product. I had specifically asked for SATIVA several times, but he sold me a HYBRID pre-roll instead. I returned to the store once again, very frustrated. Shawn then told me they didn't have any SATIVA in stock. I asked him why he never mentioned that during the purchase after I had repeatedly asked him to show me the SATIVA pre-rolls. Since he didn't have the product I requested, I asked for a refund. As a business owner myself, I normally don't leave negative reviews. However, I also believe that honest customer feedback is important so business owners know what is happening in their stores. If management has any questions about what happened, they can simply review the store's security camera footage. It will confirm everything I have described in this review, including the store being closed during business hours, the interactions at the counter, and how this situation was handled. After this experience, I honestly have no desire to return to a store where an employee treats customers with such disrespect, indifference, and lack of professionalism. I truly hope management addresses this issue because one employee like this can seriously damage a business's reputation and drive loyal customers away.
