The staff and volunteers absolutely do a fantastic job here, and the animals receive attention and love while they wait for their forever home. I followed them on Facebook for a while, watching longingly as adorable photo/bio combinations popped up in my feed, sometimes showing the Husband pups who were particularly sweet-sounding. It's all about breaking the resistance down slowly over time. Drip effect, folks. They've been indoctrinated without even realizing it and suddenly the whole family is in the car on their way to see a sweet Husky girl. Who of course is already adopted when you get there. And of course your son falls in love with a handsome pit bull who OF COURSE you take home instead. This is the cheapest animal I've ever adopted, and he came neutered, microchipped, tagged, vaccinated, and checked for food and toy aggression. Moreover, he's been the best friend for our son for a year now. Maybe they could have warned us that he's a bed hog, though!

I was told I was the third applicant and that I would be contacted if the first 2 applicants were no longer interested. I received an email that the cat was available and asked me if I was still interested. I sent 4 emails and left 1 voice message the same day. 2 days later I sent a fifth email and received a short reply that the cat was given to someone else. Should you apply for a cat or dog, sure, but expect the shelter to play some games with you. I was a longtime foster with NACC and have donated for years. I'll be taking my business elsewhere since they can't be decent enough to respect my time.

We originally went to look at a female cat and when we weren't sure about how compatible we were the girl helping us recommended a cat that we weren't even considering. The girl truly knew these cats and cared for them. We adopted our cat for free because he was a senior. We have had no health issues. I also believe if you are adopting you should be prepared for better or worse meaning medical issues might arise. The people working at this shelter are doing their absolute best. Volunteering has also been a great experience. I do the shelter buddy program so I can have a flexible schedule. I enjoy giving back, and have only ever received support from the staff when I am volunteering.

Animals appear to be well cared for and clean though labels on their cages are not always completely correct. When my wife and I visited they had a lot of dogs and cats as I expected they would but they also had a few rabbits, birds and guinea pigs. Most of the animals were available for adoption but there is also a section where animals are quarantined due to law enforcement considerations. Our most recent visit was to look for our lost Basset Hound which ran from her caretaker while we were out of state for the Thanksgiving holiday. Unfortunately we did not find our pet but the staff was very helpful in our search at the shelter. They were able to offer advice for our continued search which was appreciated. One thing I've noticed is that the volunteer staff is exceptional, consistently friendly and helpful. At the same time the paid staff can be hit or miss. Some are professional and helpful while others can be dismissive and not much interested in exerting a lot of effort. I debated a three-star rating but ultimately decided the volunteers make up for the shortcomings of the paid employees and overall the facility provides an important and valuable service to the community. One last note, our story has a happy ending. Though we did not find our beloved Basset Hound at the shelter we were able to successfully locate and secure her after five days on the run. We are very happy to have her back and she's very happy to be back with us.

It's been a few years since I last reviewed Chesapeake Humane Society so I feel compelled to…read moreprovide an update. I bring my basset hound here every year for her vaccines and other shots. The staff is always friendly and helpful, you can tell the people working there really enjoy what they are doing and are genuinely concerned for your pet. Compared to a trip to the veterinarian's office you can save a lot of money going to the Humane Society for routine shots and procedures such as spay/neuter, microchipping, dental cleaning, dental extractions, deworming, flea and tick control, etc... Microchip and vaccine service is available by appointment. You can request an appointment on their website or call them on the phone. When you schedule the appointment have your credit card ready as they require a small deposit, on my last scheduling the deposit was $30. Before the recent pandemic the services were done twice a week on a walk-in basis. Wait times were pretty lengthy (sometimes over two hours) so I really appreciate the appointment system now in place. I'm usually in and out in thirty minutes or less. They have tons of room outside for you to walk with your pets or just wait for them to call your pet. There is a station with bags and a pooper scooper if you need to clean up after your pet. The facility was recently remodeled so everything inside is neat and clean. I am grateful for such a devoted staff working to help us keep our pets happy and healthy while also helping our homeless animal population. The Chesapeake Humane Society is a great asset to the community.
