There was staff sitting a few steps from the entrance, quickly asked if I was there to donate after having seen what I was carrying. She nicely asked me to put on the floor next to the other donations of blankets, beds, etc. she noticed I was tearing up so she quietly asked if I'd come back some other time to take a look at the animals. Took my kitten to get neutered he came back okay but I am very upset about how the staff handled things. First of all, after telling me he would be ready "around 5ish" and they'd "give me a call" I did not get a call until 6:00 which i missed and then when they called again not even 15 minutes after the first call they told me verbatim "we close at 5 if you're not here in 10 minutes we are calling animal control to take him" mind you! Before letting him go i signed papers that stated if for any reason he must stay overnight it would be a $25 charge NOTHING ABOUT CALLING ANIMAL CONTROL ON MY BABY?? This was my first experience with spca or any type of place like this so I don't know what I was expecting. I brought my dog in get neutered. The lady at the desk gave us problems about the documents that we brought In. The docs we brought in were straight from the breeder. Everything was official and had the records from the other vet the breeders used. Once we get that handled we're told we didn't need to get a rabies shot in order to get our dog neutered. That's fine with us. We decide not to do that atm. The day comes for our dog to get neutered. The lady at the window is going over things we're doing that day. She says rabies and we said all we decided not to do that. She said no you legally have to get that done. I said oh the other lady told us we didn't but that's fine. We don't mind doing it the same day. So she reads that off and she's like that's all you're doing right and I said and the neutering, she looks at me and she goes well, This is a neutered scooter and she looks at me like I'm an idiot. I said yes obviously I was just confirming because you only said one thing. Then we're finished with paperwork and she doesn't give any other instructions so I say should I bring my dog in? She says yes bring him in. So I grab my 60 lb poodle and practically carry him up the stairs, it was not easy. Then the lady inside says ma'am you're not allowed in here. You need to leave. Literally the only reason I carried my 60 pound dog up the stairs and inside is because the other lady told me to. So of course I was embarrassed because there was other people around and I just looked like an idiot. Then I apologize for going inside and I said the other lady told me to go inside and that's the only reason why I went. She didn't seem to care I was speaking. She just quietly said that's fine. I was told to pick up the dog at 3 o'clock. By 12 o'clock we're getting a phone call saying to come get him. So I go and get him as quick as I can when I get him he is so high and so out of it, I was freaked out. Because number one I've never been through this experience and number two I just wasn't expecting that. So I called the breeder, who is a friend of mine and I felt better about asking her than going in and asking these rude ladies if my dog was OK. The breeder says yes he's most likely just super high and under the anesthesia. My dog was so out of it that he couldn't even walk straight. He kept bumping to walls and his eyes were rolling in the back of his head I don't understand how they would give a dog back to its owners in that condition. On top of that, nothing was explained. The cone was just given to me. then the cone wasn't big enough to keep him from licking his incision area so we had to go out and spend even more money on a doughnut for his neck. Like I said before, I didn't really know what to expect but I promise you this wasn't OK. My dog should've been left with the SPCA long enough to make sure that he was no longer on the medication or whatever sedation that they put him under. Honestly, I don't know if I've ever returned just because of how the women treated me and how my dog came back to me. read more

We typically do not leave reviews, however, we are inclined to submit a review on our experience with this animal shelter. Please note this is our experience and others may have had a different interaction. We have attempted multiple times to view and potentially adopt a dog from this shelter. This was the third time visiting this location because we wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt. Each visit we felt discriminated against from the staff in the dog adoption area due to our race. Today, as we interacted with two of the staff members here they seemed to greet us with hesitation. Throughout the conversation, we felt as though they were judging us due to the color of our skin and potentially unconscious biases they may be battling with. We were not able to get the name of the one representative who was extremely rude and uninviting. Therefore, we will attempt to describe her. She is tall, wears glasses, has highlighted hair (blonde/dark brown) and is heavier set. When we were looking at the dogs in the back she approached us and stated in a nasty, distasteful and unprofessional tone "that one is on medical hold". We proceeded to inquire about the dog we actually came for and her tone never changed. She continued to speak as if she did not want us viewing any dog/puppy. We did not feel welcomed by her and she appeared to be attempting to discourage us from meeting and adopting any dog. At one point our 3 young daughters felt like we did something wrong. We are seeking to adopt an additional dog for our current puppy. Our only desire is to provide a safe and loving environment for the dog we find/adopt. We left feeling discouraged and judged. We will kept that particular staff in our prayers. We pray that this does not happen or continue to happen to people that does not look like her. We will look elsewhere for our new fur baby. On a positive note, the front staff were extremely helpful and welcoming. read more

First, I'm writing this from a caring volunteer perspective and someone who's worked in Rescue for the past 20 years, having fostered 70+ dogs and cats and worked with NUMEROUS rescue and shelter organizations. I'm a big promoter of adopting animals, of course. But this rescue treats their volunteers absolutely horrible, and I wouldn't recommend anyone volunteer their precious time at an organization that doesn't value your contributions. I began with cleaning the cages -- it's an arduous job that everyone has to begin by doing regardless of where you want to volunteer (I wanted to help walking dogs). I'm happy to help in anyway possible and know that there are many jobs, just found it odd that vols MUST do this first, perhaps a " pay your dues" approach.But okay, I don't mind hard work and am a team player. So did this a few times before "moving up" to dog walking. Long story short, when I finally got to dog walking "training," I'd arrived to the shelter (it's a 1 hour round trip for me) only to find out that the training was "cancelled." No call, no email nothing -- this happened more than once!! Also, when this happened every single time, the staff at front desk is unpleasant, at best. I'd walk in with my grey volunteer shirt (clearly identifying myself) and even signed into the computer and NO ONE EVER even acknowledged my presence, no hello, no asking why are you here. Nothing. Just.. wow. As someone who has worked as a Volunteer Coordinator previously (managing 82 personnel), I know the key to good volunteer base is providing APPRECIATION and at least common courtesy. Not sure why this basic approach is not instilled into the staff or just inherently done as being a decent human. After this happened a couple of times and b eing treated so poorly, I realized that as much as I have to offer the animals in this shelter, the people are the unfortunate barriers. And I have many other places to commit my time to versus one that treats their hardworking volunteers so absolutely poorly. I wrote both the volunteer coordinator, Dawn Sims, and the Director Derby Bracket about this. While Dawn responded saying they'd look into the problem, I have yet to hear from Derby Bracket. That tells me everything. RECOMMENDATION - We all want to help the animals, it's a great and noble way to volunteer. But I absolutely would AVOID the VBSPCA for a volunteer opportunity. read more

This shelter cares about their furry guests. They clean the kennels daily and the dogs get multiple walks in a day. They also spot-check the kennels throughout the day so the dogs are always clean. The small animals area (rabbits/guinea pigs/rats/hamsters) allows plenty of space for the animals to move through. Bonded animals are kept together and adopted together. The cats and kittens are also in clean condos and or rooms with plenty of space to keep active and nice comfy blankets with lots of toys. Everyone works together like a fine oiled machine. The volunteers and staff really love what they do and have a passion for the well-being of all the animals. read more

This is a difficult review. Had my kittens neutered and spayed here. That procedure went well, the babies came out happy and bouncy, healing well. The issue is they went in with no fleas and came home covered in them. The poor things are suffering as they have cones due to surgery now trying to deal with fleas. They are not bouncy anymore. So, if you take your pets here, the services are excellent, just have every flea remedy you can think of for when you take them home. read more

I brought my cat in for a pre-dental appointment and the staff were all extremely kind and informative (front desk, vet tech, and veterinarian). Unfortunately I had two negative encounters with this organization. The first encounter involved myself and a friend of mine that was interested in adopting a dog. The staff that we came in contact with seemed disinterested in assisting us. We were led to the back by a young lady but she soon wandered off never to be seen again. When we finally found a staff member, she told me that she was working with another family and suggested we contact the person at the front desk. The second encounter involved me and my daughter. We drove from Yorktown so that my daughter could adopt a dog, that was previously approved to be adopted by her. The dog had some health issues and was on hold until the veterinarian approved her release. When she was contacted by the shelter to come over and finish the adoption process, she learned that the dog had already been adopted! This was deviating news for her. Not giving up on her plight to adopt a dog, we were finally able to find her her best friend at the Newport News animal shelter. The adoption process was a lot more pleasant, and a lot less expensive than the Virginia Beach animal shelter's. So very happy we didn't let those negative encounters discourage us. read more

So I brought my elder dog to the SPCA to try and re home. I have a young grandchild and he snaps at him. He dosen't like young children. I was told they had a two month waiting list, the next thing I see on the news is they took in all these dogs from another state. I understand helping others, but I live here pay taxes here and donate regularly. I tried to take him there so he wouldn't be put down. I was taught that charity begins at home. I recently adopted my two kittens from the SPCA. Everyone was so helpful during the process. My kitties were at their offsite location at the Petsmart in Landstown Commons. Jane was the volunteer helping me and she was very sweet/friendly. She took my information to the SPCA and they got back to me within an hour. Since my sons are brothers they were looking to be adopted together. I instantly fell in love so how could I not? They had a deal where I would pay one full adoption fee and the other would be half off, so all in all I paid $150 + $75 totaling $225. A bit steep but I understand why, they do take good care of the animals and mine are kittens because they are under 1 year old, so an adult cat would be cheaper. My sons are now settled and happy in their new home. About a month after I adopted them I took them to the SPCA clinic for a wellness check up, the vet was very friendly and kind to my babies. The clinic is considered low income which means they will accept anyone making under $65K a year, you'll just need to bring shot records and tax documents to show your income. I hope this helps future/aspiring pet parents! I am rooting for anyone looking to adopt a friend! read more

Horrible experience! Let's just say, I will NEVER adopt a pet from here. NEVER!!! Nothing wrong with the pets themselves, but a lot of disorganization and unnecessary red tape. My daughter and I had visited this location 4 times in the course of a 2 week time span in order to adopt a dog. The first day, we didn't see a dog we liked, but my daughter wanted to look at the kittens. Truthfully, I preferred a dog, but I wasn't necessarily opposed to a cat. So I asked if we could see cats and was told that we needed to make a separate appointment to see the cats because they were doing population control due to COVID. There was absolutely no one in there looking at cats. This is was stupid but whatever. We left. Day 2. Again, we didn't find a dog that we were interested in that were in the kennels, however, I noticed someone bringing in hound mix puppies to surrender. I went back in to ask if I can be first on the list to see the pups and was assured that I could. They needed to go through an intake process, and they'll give me the first available time slot. Ok. We made the appointment, and then left. Day 3. We come, as agreed, for "the first available time slot" to find out that 2/3 of the puppies already had the maximum number of applications. HOW IF WE WERE SUPPOSED TO BE FIRST? My daughter and I agreed to meet with the last pup and I explained that we were interested. I was then told that we would be the SECOND application, as he already had one on file. mmkay. They called a couple of days later and told me that we didn't get the dog. Day 4. I gave it one last go. We walked in for our appointment. And was told to head on back but we stopped because a man was surrendering his dog, as he stated that his apartment complex wouldn't let him keep him. After seeing my daughter get excited and pet this well manned dog, I told the man to not surrender it, and that we'll take him. Then here comes Miss Problematic. This woman told my daughter, and I, to wait outside. She then convinced this man that he shouldn't give the dog to me. That he should surrender it to them, and then I, in turn, pay them to adopt him. This is where animal activism goes wrong, because here I am trying to adopt a 4 year old dog but the very place that is suppose to protect them, is in fact, getting in the way of quickly rehoming him. She came outside and told me that I was going to be first on the list to adopt him in a few days. But after all of the bs, I knew she was lying. I get a voicemail a few days later, that said that I was once again SECOND ON THE LIST!!!! And this is for a dog that literally NO ONE had seen before me. So how am I second? I told her that we were "all set" and were no longer interested. I can't make this shit up. It's actually a little humorous. Sad though, because we really wanted to adopt, but we just went to a breeder and we couldn't be happier. read more

I've adopted two animals from this shelter. The first was my dog Dante in 2009. One of the best decisions of my and my husband's life. Dante has been a joy. He's smart, he's cute, he's stubborn, but he has been the best companion anyone could ask for. Very well behave dog. Recently my cat Thelma passed away. I was devastated. Thelma wouldn't want me to be sad and would have wanted me to get another friend. So this past Friday I adopted a very sweet cat. She's a Bombay cat named Noodle. She made herself at home. She's still getting used to the dogs but they welcomed her right away. She hasn't scratched the furniture and she's very intelligent. I highly recommend everyone that wants a pet to adopt from this location. The staff is friendly, and the shelter is absolutely clean. They definitely help you out when adopting your new family member. read more

My experience with the SPCA clinic has been a nightmare. I had scheduled my dog's (Leyla) dental cleaning/extraction appointment for the 19th. They told me they would send an estimate over, and just a few hours later I received another phone call to reschedule to the following week as they overbooked appointments on the 19th. Fast forward to the 18th I received an automated phone call at 5:00pm advising that I have my appointment tomorrow on the 19th for Leyla. I pressed one to confirm and took off from work with very late notice that I wouldn't be at work in the morning due to the appointment that seemed to have never been rescheduled. I wanted to call and confirm, but due to the late hour the clinic was already closed, and I didn't want to lose my deposit, so I went into the SPCA at 8:00am on the 19th for drop-off to be told that Leyla's Kennel was scheduled for today, but her dental was scheduled for the following week. How does that work? They told me it was no big deal just come back next week. I explained to them that I took off from work because of this automated call and they kept saying there was nothing they could do as it is a new system. The fact is that it isn't the system as they truly had me scheduled for a Kennel on the 19th and the office staff confirmed that with me when I was in the office. I was told the office manager would call me as soon as she got in at 9:00am and would be providing me with a discount due to my inconvenience. I informed the office staff again that I still never received an estimate and had no idea what to expect cost wise, and asked to confirm my email again this time they had an email, but the incorrect spelling. However, they looked and saw that there was never an attempt to send me the estimate to begin with. Time had passed and it was now close to 2pm, so I decided to call as I still hadn't received the estimate and never received a call from the office manager as promised. When I called I reached the voicemail, and approximately 5 minutes later I received the estimate with no discount on the invoice and no call from the manager. I sent an email back advising of my discontent that I never received a call when I was advised by the staff that I would be contacted. The "office manager" finally called me back at 4pm and was very rude and matter of fact. She stated that she will work things out on her end as far as the issues but blamed the new phone system again. I tried to explain to her the full situation of data/record keeping, the phone issue, the failure of scheduling me for Kennel on the 19th that prompted the call regardless of a new phone system if that appointment wasn't scheduled I don't believe it would have ever called me. I asked if I could recommend that automated calls happen prior to 5:00pm as I would have called to confirm the SPCA office and explain that I now had two appointment dates but was unable to due to the office being closed. Kindra stated to me that I couldn't make such a recommendation. I then asked her about the discount as when I looked online it states the dental cleanings are $350, and that is what it is on my estimate. She goes "yeah, it is a time for a lot of changes the website needs to be updated as well and we are going to honor the old pricing for you which you are saving $125". I asked her wouldn't it have been $350 if I got my estimate when I had originally asked anyway? She dismissed me and said that I could shop around if I wanted and implied if I did so that they would keep my $200 deposit. My appointment for Leyla happened today and I asked who the directors are and was advised that there was more than one. The reason I had asked this is when I spoke to Kindra she informed me that there wasn't anyone above her that I could speak to. Kindra told me that she didn't have anyone above her that I could speak to which I also found to be a lie as I was provided the following email for her boss Derby (ceo@vbspca.com) which appears incorrect when I do a search online and found the emails that I have now. Why provide a different email when the emails are public information online? From the beginning, speaking with Kindra all I wanted was some understanding and apology, but she far then provided that. I wasn't even asking for a discount I was the one informed that it would be provided to me, which in the end it wasn't. I would also like to mention further that even after expressing my dissatisfaction I was sent a survey asking how my appointment was on the 19th that never happened. With everything that happened I understand things happen we are only human. If I was only shown a little compassion and understanding with being able to explain the entire situation rather than being rushed off the phone and only advised that "it would be handled internally" doesn't help with any customer interaction. read more

They are making humans and pets wait outside in the pouring rain They have no control over the animals in their care, they are requiring entire vet records just to see your dog (which is absolutely absurd if you have a rescue with no background info). Some of the staff members in this clinic are the reason animals do not get adopted. As soon as we entered the clinic, it almost felt we were in the wrong for being there. We put our name on the list for dogs, and I asked if we could look at cats while we were waiting because we are open to adopting both, and was told no rudely. Then because there were others waiting, we sat down inside as well. Minding our business, we were asked to wait outside. Only us, not the folks sitting to our left or right, just us. This was my example for today alone. Earlier this week I popped in to see an older pup we've seen a couple times, because I wanted to make sure he was still there. I explained that my husband would only be able to meet the pup over the next couple days because we are geographically separated. This was met with tension from a staff member, as the pup is recovering from being sick and will likely not be able to meet my husband before he heads back west. I was promptly told that the animal HAD to meet all members of the family prior to adoption. I explained that my husband does not live with us and all members of our current house hold could meet him after he was well. To me, that conversation was not supportive in the least to military members, and it also does not promote an older dog from getting adopted. I understand staff members are tired, there are a lot of animals, and shit happens...but I won't be returning because it's been incident after incident for me. Do better. read more

Hello! I wanted to share how happy I am with the SPCA Medical Clinic in Virginia Beach. As the proud owner of a new 1 year old Jack Russell, I have required several appointments to take care of vaccines, tests, questions, etc. Every single time I come in, the entire staff (from the phone and help desk/scheduling personnel to all the wonderful veterinarians and veterinarian assistants) is super friendly, professional, knowledgeable and very clear with their communications. Recently, "Charlie" went in for her 1 year "Wellness Exam". As a new puppy parent, I had multiple questions and concerns. The front desk personnel were fantastic to work with. Every single one of my questions and requests were addressed in their entirety. Perfect coordination with the entire staff. Charlie and could not be happier! :) Thanks SPCA! read more

Went to the SPCA clinic in Virginia Beach. One of my cat was diagnosed with Guardia so the Vet prescribed metronidazole for both cats and they send use home barley enough for the 10 day dose for the two cats. As expected day 5 we ran out and call the vet to grab some more. They were unwilling to give use enough medicine to finish out the doses without paying. Which we paid for the medicine already. When I had to made two vet visits paid over $293 and was not provided enough medicine to finish the course for my babies to get better. Wasted my time and money and my cat still has Guardia. Never coming back here again. The clinic for some reason never picks up the phone. read more

The VBSPCA is a wonderful organization. I foster kittens and puppies, and it is very rewarding. I love helping the animals. The staff is always helpful, they supply you with all you need. They are supportive, and they take excellent care of the animals; addressing any health issues, etc. All of the staff work tirelessly for all of the animals in their care. I have also adopted 2 of the fosters (foster failure), and they are the greatest pets. read more

This place needs to hire more competent people. Not only the person at the adoption appointment did not know half the answer to my questions they then give me a rabies voucher to come back within certain dates. I come back and of course had to get the same person who now tells me you need to come back closer to the last day. That only gives me a couple of days to get a free shot! Why write a time frame of 3 weeks on your voucher if you are only going to do it the last couple of days?? Avoid! read more

Extremely rude girls at the front desk, they would not even check to see if a photo I had matched a kitten in their kennel. The kitten was inadvertently picked up by VBSPCA from animal control and was going to be put up for adoption. They texted animal control to get the facts and I waited for a response, they called the police who asked me to leave. The kitten belonged to my neighbor and I was trying to help them because they also were treated rudely and could not get an answer. Since he was from the Netherlands I thought it may just be a communication problem, as I found out it wasn't. Years ago I had donated and installed some equipment for the shelter, thousands of dollars worth and was about to do a complete new upgrade of that equipment. But obviously they couldn't care less. This was one of the most bizarre experiences I have ever encountered.....and I am 64! read more

I have adopted from here over the years and I also volunteer which, that alone is Extremely Rewarding. I had a pleasant experience with my last fur baby adoption, and the folks working there were very responsive to my questions and or concerns. The animals are always well taken care of, the dogs go on daily outings, and cages for ALL the animals are always clean. That is very important to me. Never come here for surgery, got to the norfolk spca. I brought my two boy cats here to get neutered. And when i came back to pick them up there was blood inside of the carrier and on my cats, because when they woke up after surgery they were never checked on and scratched and clawed at the side so much they wore their nails down to the quick read more

We are adopting a dog from the SPCA. He has a wonderful personality, and warmed up to us very quickly, even though they said he's not usually like that and never has been with other people. It is sooooo sad (we were both teared up, and I am again thinking about them) to see the dogs caged up teary eyed with people coming in walking by the different cages. And there are far too many pit bulls and pit bull mixes that are homeless. My wish for all the homeless dogs is that their forever families will adopt every dog from every shelter, so no more dogs will live in cages wishing to be loved. I worked at the clinic side as a receptionist, I had such a terrible experience, both of the supervisors were rude as all hell, I was yelled at on my first day for making a mistake (they were lucky I didn't quit right then and there) especially since they knew they were extremely short staffed. The receptionist were NOT allowed to take 30 minute lunch breaks and god forbid we go outside for 15 minutes, not having a 30 minute break at ANY workplace working MORE than 10 hours is extremely ILLEGAL!! I do not recommend any bit working there! I stayed as long as I did because I love animals and I absolutely loved seeing all the pets walk in, the environment was just extremely toxic. Went there to look at some cats and dogs the old blonde woman at the desk was rude and condescending she said we had to wait to see them which I was fine with, the woman said it would be 30 minutes now I arrived at 2:00pm and didn't get called in till almost 4 and when I did get called i walk in the door and she said "umm did I call you" wouldn't go here again the application process is stupid and the employees don't know shit about what they are talking about. read more

This place needs much better management! Someone who answers phones should know all the details involved and if they don't they should find out!! Came out to adopt a specific dog only to be told because I never own one of this breed I could not adopt. I know all about the breed and fully understand all the problems they can have. Who are they to say I could not take care of this dog. To not even be considered is DISCRIMINATION!!! There are so many other great places to adopt don't consider this one! read more
