First the staff is nice. The building is falling down, I would not go near the toilet room on a bet. The building is Dangerous. I drove 65 miles to get to an authentic southern bbq restaurant since everything I find was closed down. The food was okay but the beans were out of a can and cold. The hunt for the best barbecue continues with the second joint today. This is a small victory as I have always wanted to hit more than one restaurant on the Texas Monthly Top 50 BBQ establishments in a single day. Billy's Old Fashion Barbecue happens to be number 9. I have a hair less than four years to visit the other 41 before the list is updated. I have my work cut out for me as these places are as far at 500 miles from home. I wasn't hungry when we rolled into Jasper, but I was here to eat barbecue. I knew I wanted brisket and when we found the dilapidated restaurant, I knew we were going to experience some magic. I chose the sliced brisket sandwich. I wasn't expecting this monstrosity as it was quite large. Topped with pickles and onions, this sauce soaked sandwich was perfect. I only wish I had ordered the sauce on the side. The sauce was decent, but I came for the meat. The sliced brisket was very nice. It was juicy and the fat was rendered beautifully. It was a bit toothsome, but it certainly wasn't tough. I had forgotten to ask for untrimmed meat, so I was pleased when I saw that the crusty bark was intact. The meat had a mild flavor. Not too much smoke, and it wasn't overpowered with seasoning. It was a simple, beefy masterpiece. At only 2 1/2 hours from home, I can see myself loading up the family for a nice meaty adventure. Searching for good bbq and found the place. The chopped brisket sandwich was delicious. Other patrons said their hamburgers are the best!

This place was recommended to us. We each got a chopped beef sandwich loaded with pickles, onions! Sandwiches were huge!! Ended up with leftovers to bring home. Friendly people and great service!! When in Jasper be sure to try Billy's BBQ!! read more

Wish I would have found this place years back. I really enjoyed talking with the lady that takes your order. I tried the chopped beef as they were out of brisket. Came on a big bun with pickles, onions and sauce wrapped right in tin foil! Got down the road a ways and took my first bite and immediately understood why they are in the top 50 for Texas Monthly. Our experience was wonderful. My family just moved from out of town. The building from the outside was quite rugget but once we walked in it felt very old fashioned. It seem to have had a warm and welcoming presence to it. Very small business so was not bothered by billy's wife taking the order. Her service was wonderful and beyond our expectations. She made very sure that we had everything. Billy came out and greeted us and introduced himself. The food was incredible. They ribs are to die for. I have to say that I was a little disappointed after the rave reviews I heard about this place. Aesthetically it fit the bill of everything thing you'd want to see in a hole in the wall BBQ joint. The sauce was quite good, but there was too much fat packed into the chopped beef for my liking. My other complaint is upon walking inside I had to wait a solid 10 minutes before I could find anyone to take my order and another 10-15 until I got my food. During this time 2 other customers came and gave up before I did.....this was at about 1215 on a Friday. I will give this place another shot at a better review with hopes that it was just a bad day because it has potential. read more

Billy is great. Fresh meat, not frozen. He uses his own recipes for all , burgers, links, brisket, etc. Homemade potatoe salad, Cole slaw, the works. He doesn't meet a stranger. Honest hard working, GREAT Food. read more

If I were by myself, I probably wouldn't go in because I might not have known if I was in the right place. The seating area is tiny and it's nothing to look at. The staff was very friendly and the food was very good. Had ribs, potato salad, baked beans and it came with white bread. My wife and I were in the area and decided to find this place for lunch...not the easiest place to find and asked several locals where it was and finally found a guy who thought he knew where it was and gave us directions which were correct. This is VERY unassuming from the outside...small, kinda run down looking. Went inside...very small...2 small booths and ordered. Limited menu...brisket, chopped beef, sausage, ribs and burgers. We both got ribs and brisket to go...pretty day and wanted to eat in the city park. Nice lady who took our order. Had to wait about 15 plus minutes for our food. SUGGESTION...ask for the sauce on the side!! The sauce is good, just too much...overpowers the meat. Both brisket and ribs were good...tender and flavorful, once you scrape off excess sauce. Comes with white bread, pickles, beans (not much to brag about...tasted like canned beans), and potato salad...pretty good flavor...made kinda like mashed potatoes.
