My wife and I were camping at Martin Dies State Park. While traveling, we like to try the local barbecue. The staff at Smitty's was awesome, very polite and nice. You get a very nice amount of food for a very reasonable price. We had ribs and brisket. The ribs were quite tasty, although a little greasy. The brisket was good, but the sauce really helped the flavor. This is fairly typical Texas bbq, but I've had better. I would go back to Smitty's, but I reserve 5-star ratings for only the absolute best bbq restaurants, like Country Tavern, in Kilgore, Texas. read more

Easy location to find with lots of parking. The smoke on the ribs and chicken was perfection. The barbecue sauce is warm, thin, and has vinegar which I love but if you don't order it on the side. The baked beans were totally unremarkable. The pinto beans were good. The coleslaw was fresh and pure. I wish I'd ordered it for both of my side offerings! I stopped here after a business trip in Kirbyville. I was enticed by the wood piles out front, and had high expectation for smoky yet tender brisket. The brisket is just okay. I really wanted it to be juicy and melty in my mouth. The brisket was not these things; it was just a little juicy, and instead of being tender, it broke apart with a fork like crusted clay. BBQ sauce is nothing special, and that's too bad -- it should have helped with the dry meat. I am also not getting the big smoky taste like I craved; there's just a hint of smoke flavor. And, I am leaving the restaurant hungry -- not a very generous portion of meat there. I don't live in this area, but if I did, I don't think I'd be in a hurry to comeback here. read more

After a couple of bad experiences here a few years ago, we had avoided this place with a passion. But the location is entirely too convenient, we were craving BBQ, so we gave it a try. We got take out, a loaded baked potato with beef and a three meat plate. The potato was cooked perfectly, and the chopped brisket was meaty and tender. The three meats (chicken, ribs, link) were smoked to perfection. The chicken was done but not dry (a miracle outcome on my smoker); the rib meat easily pulled right off the bone, but held together well; and the link was flavorful and juicy. The side dishes - green beans and loaded mashed potatoes - were just OK; but you don't come here for the veggies. There's a new owner in town, and it is readily apparent. Smitty, whoever TH he is, can rest easy, knowing that his namesake place is in good hands. read more

Wow! If you love Frito pie, you must visit tiny Jasper and get their Cowboy Pie. The pie's foundation is a layer of Fritos. Those are smothered by chopped beef and beans. My wife got pinto and I got baked. Along with the beans, come BBQ sauce, shredded cheese, and chives. We both loved our pies. My wife also enjoyed her side of dirty rice. read more
