La Châtelaine is the kind of place you have to find--tucked away in a quiet Bozeman neighborhood,…read morefar from the bustle of Main Street. The search felt almost romantic, like wandering the side streets of Paris in pursuit of a hidden chocolatier known only to locals. The exterior was humble, even nondescript--I half-wondered if I'd stumbled upon an old hardware store. But the moment I stepped inside, I knew I'd found something extraordinary. A long glass case gleamed with rows of exquisite chocolates--delicate, jewel-like creations that would make any Parisian confiseur proud. These weren't simple chocolate bars or mass-produced sweets; each piece looked like a tiny work of art, inspired by faraway cacao origins and the timeless elegance of old-world France. Choosing just four for my sampler box felt impossible, so I surrendered and asked the server for guidance. She smiled and asked what flavors I loved most, then curated a selection that included two pieces crafted from Mexican cacao--tracing their roots to the Aztecs--and a layered chocolate so refined it could have come straight from Saint-Germain-des-Prés. To complete the indulgence, I ordered a hot chocolate--Mexican style, of course. Rich, velvety, and lightly spiced, it was perfection in a cup. Each bite of chocolate was an awakening--smooth, complex, and impossibly luxurious. By the end, I was speechless. La Châtelaine isn't just a chocolatier; it's a love letter to Paris, written in cacao. They may be hidden in Bozeman for now, but their craft deserves a world stage.

On my visit to Bozeman, I made a special trip just to get a box of these perfectly tempered and interestingly--but not overly weirdly--flavored chocolates. The chocolate has that perfect snap and gloss that marks high-end chocolates and makes their prices make sense. I wish I'd gotten the name, though, of the young woman helping me because she was remarkably friendly and helpful and was a wonderful representative of this company (for the record, I went on Sunday, August 4, around 1pm, in case that helps the owner identify her). She suggested some favorites of other customers and also her own favorites while she packed up my box. Thank you, friendly person!

We only ended up getting three items: their celebrated huckleberry scone, a cinnamon roll, and an almond croissant. We really liked the scone, but that's probably more because we're big fans of huckleberries than anything about it being outstanding. The almond croissant was good, as was the roll, but they were both beyond flaky--too flaky--and crumbs and powdered sugar were flying everywhere. In hindsight, we wish we had gotten a savory item to round things out because, overall, nothing was bad but nothing was capital-G Great. The staff are super friendly and helpful, but there was no one bussing or cleaning tables, so everything was pretty unkempt. We think it's 3.5 stars, but we're rounding up because we really enjoyed the overall vibe of the place and can see ourselves coming back on future visits.

There was a line, and it only kept growing after us. Once we got inside, we saw why. There were only two Gen Z'ers working, and they were beyond sweet and accommodating, but let's just say that the word 'hustle' has yet to be incorporated into their lexicon. SLLLLLLOWWWW. The guy four customers before us was still waiting for his milkshake (taking one of the girls out of commission) by the time we checked out! You need more staff back there! The ice cream is really good, though, and they have several unique flavor profiles that we were pleasantly surprised to see available in Montana. Our daughter got a salted caramel that she loved, and one us was a bit boring with mint chocolate chip, but she was happy with it. The other one got the black bear sundae (or whatever it was called), which had chocolate and huckleberry ice cream, covered in chocolate syrup and whipped cream. Now *that* was spectacular. Can't stop won't stop with the huckleberry while we're in this state! Portions are OK. So, overall, a good spot, and we can see ourselves coming back, but man, please manage your staffing on busy spring evenings. 3.5 stars, rounding up.

They did not reserve a booth and did nothing to recognize the occasion. We then had to wait over an hour for food. The appetizers were good - tartare and yellowtail - but the entrees were absolutely dreadful. (How do you screw up a hamburger?) We gave them another shot last night and waited 15 minutes to even get approached for a drink, and no one came over. So we left and went to Stockman's (excellent!) 1864 is great venue that is entirely wasted.
