I love Bing's! It is a real traditional bakery. It is a scratch bakery with a traditional menu. The cupcakes are always fresh. They have a great cake selection. The butter cookies are always perfect. You seriously cannot go wrong at Bing's Bakery, especially if you are a Newark native like myself. If you have the largest or even the slightest of sweet tooth they will have something to satisfy your every need of your cravings...cakes, cookies, pies, cupcakes, you name they have it. Every experience I have had as been wonderful from the second I walked in the door to the second I left, and trust me I am a regular. They have extremely friendly, educated, and helpful workers that can pinpoint what type of cake/pastry/dessert you are looking for in seconds and they design beautiful cakes too. Everything is always great from tomato pie (my personal favorite) to their chocolate glacés...and if you do not know what a glacé is you should definitely stop by and try one out. Mmmmm, I question some of these bad reviews. I have gone to Bings over the last couple of years since it was sold to the new owners. I have had nothing but quality bakery items from them. I love bakeries. I really do. I might be spoiled because of all the great bakeries in New York, but I think Bing's Bakery is mediocre at best. My finacé and i went to bings to get a cake for our wedding. The cake samples were OK. The basics, chocolate and vanilla were fine, but the other flavor types were too dry. However, our complaints come in with the service. During our consultation, I showed the "baker" some pictures I pulled off of the internet, and in a very condescending and rude tone she says to me "Do you think your are on the cake boss?". I was appalled, but yet the appointment continued, and she showed me some cakes that she "might" be able to do. We left the bakery and she said she would call within a week with pricing information. HOWEVER, she NEVER called back, not event to tell me that they wouldn't be able to bake the cake. I thought that was extremely unprofessional. I took my SAME EXACT picture from the internet to another bakery called Sweets to You by Gingers Inc, in Wilmington, and they are going to make my wedding cake exactly how I want it. Short story long, I will never be going back to Bings! I didn't even want to give it the one star, but yelp forced me too ! read more

Exceptional! I asked Bings to make a birthday cake for my husbands big birthday bash. He is a huge Dallas Cowboy fan and I sent them a pic of a Dallas jersey with my husbands age and last name on the back like a true jersey. They told me the fondant would be a lot more than I was willing to pay but said they could do it in buttercream for half the price (the cake was for 60 ppl) I agree and when I picked it up I was shocked. It looked better than the pic I sent them. It tasted AMAZING! It was vanilla cake with chocolate filling. Everyone was taking pics of the cake and asking where I got it. Bing's did a fantastic job making our daughter's first birthday cake. We took a picture of a two tiered fondant cake and they were able to create it exactly like we wanted for a reasonable price. They even made a matching "smash" cake for a very low price. read more

I ordered a strawberry short cake from Bing's the other day and it was very disappointing. It was beautifully decorated but the filling tasted like the strawberry goo that you get at the grocery store and left a chemical taste. The whipped cream had no flavor and the cake was just OK. I have had better from the grocery store for half the cost. I called Bing's and was asked to bring the cake it to see Norma. Norma did not want to hear what i thought and she did not care to make it right. All I wanted was to exchange for another cake since I have heard that Bing's cakes are good. Maybe just the strawberry shortcake is not so I was willing to exchange it and give them another chance. Without even discussing anything Norma said they will give me half of my money back so she opened the register and handed me $12.25. I was shocked that she didn't even offer me the full amount since I brought her 3/4 of the cake back. It was evident that Norma did not care to make it right and keep a customer. In this day in age when times are tough you would have thought she would make customer service a priority. I would NEVER treat my customers like that, especially knowing that this was my first experience there. I will NEVER go back again and I will make sure my friends wont either. read more

My friends raved about the cakes from here, so I decided to try it. I bought a chocolate cake with chocolate buttercream frosting for my youngest son's birthday. I didn't mind the price ($25) since I usually pay $20 for a cake from South Philly & I was saving myself a trip. The cake design was really nice. I was hoping that the cake tasted as good as it looked. Unfortunately, I was disappointed. My older son & niece didn't like it either. They are 4 year olds, who love cake & always ask for more. I was surprised that they didn't even finish their slices. I tried another slice a couple hours later to see if I'd change my mind. It was the same result. The cake was very dry. The icing was just okay. It didn't taste like good buttercream icing. The other items in their display cases didn't look very appetizing to me, so I didn't buy anything else. Purchased one of their "torts" for a birthday. The one with the frosting mushrooms on top. Horrible doesn't come close to how bad it was. Tasteless. Cake had no taste and the frosting tasted like Crisco; "buttercream" my foot! In between the four layers was the thinnest layer of frosting possible. Cake was so bad my granddaughters didn't even eat it. Being 5 and 2 you'd think they would eat the frosting but they didn't even like that! I've had better cakes from Walmart! I recently viewed a recording of TLC's Buddy's Bakery Rescue; I decided to take my son to Bing's Bakery to check it out! Was impressed with the new look, but not as much so with the staff! There is absolutely no enthusiastic joy there, sadly to say. I asked for a small cappuccino and I got coffee. I also did try one of the chocolate cake rolls for $1.00; That I was impressed! I only wish that the service was that good! So I'd come back for the goods, but you got to make your employees smile more! I'll be back! FYI, you all need to put a price on your goods! :) read more

Bing's is a great bakery. If you want scratch made cupcakes and cakes, this is your place. My husband and I had Bing's make our small wedding cake and it was delicious. The cannolis are to die for. I recently ordered a rum cake for my Italian Aunt's 99th birthday. Being from NYC and used to wonderful rum cakes, I had intended to go to Isgro's in South Philadelphia for a cake, but unable to do that, I thought I had to settle for a local rum cake at Bing's Bakery in Newark, DE. What a surprise!! This was the most wonderful and beautiful rum cake I have had and I have had many...very tall, full of delicious vanilla and chocolate custard, and so much wonderful rum soaked sponge cake. Not sure where any negative reviews come from, but I am also originally from NYC and Bings comes the closest to matching the quality that I grew up with. The creme fillings are absolutely fantastic and the flakey crust on the pastries is just about perfect. The cake was delivered on time and was so beautiful we didn't want to make the first cut. Even better, it was just as delicious as it was attractive. The cake was moist and the frosting was superb! Never go to this place! I had my graduation party this past weekend at which we had a full sheet cake, paid $100 for a chocolate chip cake with cake icing and some words written in blue icing. At my party this past Saturday we cut into the cake to find that they had given us a vanilla cake... So my mother stopped what she was doing and called the bakery immediately! She explained the situation very calmly and they then proceeded to tell her that she needed to prove this by sending a picture of the cake via email. They got off the phone with her and I immediately took a picture of the cake and sent it to their email. She then called them back and they then proceeded to tell her that they couldn't find the order form for the cake that we had just picked up THE DAY BEFORE! At this point they put her on hold for thirty minutes(keep in mind the party is still going on) and after thirty minutes she decided to hang up and call back, to which she found out that they had closed and they just decided to leave her on the line. Since they were closed the following two days she decided to call back AGAIN today, three days after the party. Where they finally told her she will only be receiving $25 back, for a mistake that they blamed her for. We ordered the cake in person and very clearly stated what we wanted done. Tell me how that is our mistake! Bing Bakery does not deserve your money nor your time. I am highly, HIGHLY disappointed with this establishment and I promise you I will never ever purchase anything from this place again and I will certainly NEVER recommend this place. Today is a sad day. I grew up going to Bing's for treats, my favorite has always been the buttercream fancy. Today I was back in Newark visiting family and I stopped by Bing's. I bought a buttercream fancy. The original version has layers of white cake with buttercream and jam In between the layers. Real raspberry and apricot jam, real butter and the whole thing is robed in a thick layer of marzipan. Truly delicious. The current version had dunkin donuts quality jelly instead of jam, the buttercream did not taste like butter, and the marzipan was a bizarre electric pink, very small and thin, and only sat on the top of the little cake, instead of covering the sides as it should. I took a couple of bites but couldn't finish. It was horrible. I also tried an almond puff that was greasy and heavy, instead of light and airy, and a chocolate glacé that was a disappointment. This visit to Bing's made me so sad. I remember little Mrs. Bing puttering around the back office. She was such a sweet lady and she ran a tight ship in terms of quality control. I understand that it is very hard to make a profit with a small business like this and so I sympathize with the new(er) owners. But unfortunately I will not be returning. They may have cut costs on my buttercream fancy but they have lost a long time customer for good. I will instead prefer to remember Bing's the way it used to be run, back in the old days. read more
