Had a great time with the fiance and her family today picking out what will eventually be our wedding cake. This post will be updated after our wedding in June, but so far the process for which to pick out a cake design and the insides of the cake was great. The person who worked with us has an art degree, and my fiance has very abstract ideas by description that the worker could almost perfectly put onto paper for her. Awesome so far. Bing's was our go to bakery. But no more. I ordered a cake on Aug 13th for pick up the next day for my wife's birthday. I ordered a chocolate cake with butter cream icing. The cake was dry like it was 4 days old. The icing was not butter cream and had no taste. I went back the next week and asked for the manager. A young man of approx 25 years old came out. I assured him I wasn't looking for a refund, just the opportunity to express my disappointment. The manager asked for the cake or a piece of it. I told him we froze it for later use since we paid a lot of money for it. He could have cared less about my complaint. We did try and eat it later. It was just as bad. We tossed it. Never again! I enjoy Bing's because they excel at the few baked goods I struggle to make myself... the desserts with flaky, crisp, or delicate crusts that take a lot of time and practice to prepare well. (Actually, my pies are better, but I can say that anywhere.) The large variety of cookies and low price also makes Bing's an excellent resource for supplying snacks at a meeting or event. I have a hard time resisting the urge to stop in for a snack whenever I pass by. I've had numerous of their cookies and pastries and have yet to come by one I didn't like. I don't know what many of the desserts are called, but my favorites tend to be those with cherry fillings, cinnamon, or almondy and buttery flavors. Cherry triangles, the almondy cookies with a chocolate dollop in the middle, and the lemon balls are the items I come back to most regularly, but the donuts, bread rolls, strudel, black and white cookies, brownies (superb amount of chocolate), cannolis (not too sweet), and plain old sugar cookies are other describable and delicious desserts that jump to mind. That said, look elsewhere for your soft, fresh out of the oven cookies, because that's not their style. If you want something warm other than coffee, get a sticky bun and take it home and refresh it at a low temp in the oven (or impatiently in the microwave). Mmm. But I can't say anything about the frosted cakes or cupcakes (which I simply don't like no matter who makes them) or candies (which I only haven't tried because I'm still working through the many types of cookies!). read more

I want to like bings so bad, but it's so challenging to like them. As a college student, this place is over priced. It feels like there are just too many things going on here and they are too busy making quantity, not quality. The french macaroons I got were crushed on spots and broken in addition to being overpriced for the size. There were cakes pushed up against the glass, which was gross! The quality just seems poor. The taste is there with some things for sure, but this bakery clearly doesn't have a clear focus. read more

Bing's was my family's go-to bakery when I was little, and I'd really love to post a better review. Sadly, the bakery I remember has been sold. It happens. Bakery products are just fine. I found everything to be overly sweet. Their cupcakes fall victim to the typical way-too-much frosting treatment, and the underlying cake is nothing to rave about. However, the real problem here is service: they are convinced that the customer is pretty much always wrong. Bing's is a contracted baker with our wedding venue, and we stopped in for a tasting. Everything was just OK. The cake samples were dry, but we thought that maybe they had been sitting for a little while before we arrived (which, in hindsight, is really no excuse when you're SELLING WEDDING CAKES). But, given my sentimental memories of the yummy, perfect birthday cakes of my childhood, we decided to order a small cake as a trial run. It was the best mistake we ever made. Oh, what awaited us. Dry, stale-tasting cake. There is no way this was freshly made to order, and if it was, they should get out of the baking business. Immediately. We were expecting a jam-type raspberry filling, but we got that unappetizing, cheap gel donut filling with nary a raspberry in sight, but loads of chemical/fake flavoring. The icing (which was that cheap sugary junk, NOT the buttercream we ordered) decoration was sloppy and obviously rushed. The overall effect was mediocre at best, and decidedly NOT up to wedding standards. Had this hot mess shown up on our cake table, I would have been appalled, then furious. When I called to give them feedback and hopefully right the ship, no one - and ESPECIALLY not the wedding cake coordinator - really wanted to hear it. I don't think they're terribly receptive to constructive feedback. We opted to cancel our order, and went with Cakes by Kim, who produced a beautiful, delicious cake that everyone raved about. read more

I think a few of the reviews are from people that grew up with Bing's Bakery and wished the taste stayed the same. As I'm a newcomer, I can only judge what it currently is. I love the cakes, the cookies and the many options. I do wish the employees smiled more, it's like don't seem to enjoy working there, but I can excuse it because they are helpful. Lastly, I don't mind the pricing, it feels right on the mark for quality goods. If I wanted something sweet, I could just go to Dunkin Donuts. My fiancé and I paid Bing's Bakery a visit for cake consulting for our wedding cake in September. The moment we entered the store, we were surprised by how different the shop looked after their visit from Cake Boss. The employee's were very nice and hospitable to get us started on trying the selection of icings, fillings and cakes they had to choose from their wedding cakes. Everything from the samples to the complementary drinks were delicious! The samples were the right amount of sweetness and the cakes were so soft and moist! When we got to meet with Carla about confirming our order for our wedding cake, she showed so much enthusiasm for helping us with our order. Helped us to understand the process for our cake and even showed us some of their lovely designs on their cakes. At the end of our meeting with Carla, we were even surprised when we inquired about our parking voucher, she let us know that they did have free parking behind their bakery and actually helped us out with the parking lot bill. (We had parked all the way across main street because I forgot where the bakery was. Silly me!) Our history with Bing's goes back to 1973. Four generations of our family have enjoyed this bakery. We've had their wedding cakes, pastries, cookies, birthday cakes. Over the years we've had it all. We loved it all, too. We've since all moved from the Wilmington area--I am closest to Bing's living north of Philadelphia, but it remains a special family memory. Over the years, we'd even fly out to visit family in California with a box of Bing's pastries in tow for Christmas or Thanksgiving. In preparation for a visit from out-of-town family, I recently made the trip to this family favorite to stoke the memories--only to find it is a pale ghost of what it once was. We loved the various mille-feuille pastries--particularly the raspberry strips. It was a light, airy, visually beautiful confection with a real raspberry flavor (you could once see the raspberry seeds in the filling). What passes for a raspberry strip is now a heavy and greasy with a red gel filling that doesn't even remotely taste of raspberry. The almond filled pastry was also a disappointment. Many of the old standbys are gone, too. You stopped making the melt away? The cinnamon puff pastry has also been discontinued. Sorry, Bing's but a 44-year love affair and tradition is over. I imagine this happened after the Bing family sold the business. You really have lost the vision of that great bakery. read more

The place is an abomination of a bakery. Sisters graduation party was this weekend and we ordered a chocolate chip cake from Bing. When we cut into the cake and wouldn't you believe it no chocolate chips. We had over 75 people anticipating a delicious a delicious chocolate chip cake and Bing let us down. My mother called to complain and they put her on hold for thirty minutes after telling her they didn't believe her!!! After 30 minutes she hung up and called again to find out that the bakery had closed for the day and they just left her on hold. I have half a mind to seek the owner of this establishment and spit in their face for allowing such lousy customer service. Next party I host I will serve Tasty Cake before I serve Bing. It is now my personal mission to see that this bakery goes out of business. PS the cake was drier than Arizona on a Tuesday. read more

Newark has one and only one bakery, Bings. That, and little/no exposure to real bakery delectable is the only explanation I have for the 5 stars given by other reviewers. European style baked goods.... NOT!! I am disappointed every time, unless I stop in for something mundane like a cookie . Yesterday I stopped in and saw what Bings calls a 'Linzer Tart'. A REAL linzer tart is an Austrian confection made with an almond based crust and a raspberry filling . Bing's version was a soft sandwich cookie with raspberry jam filling and nothing almond within ten miles of the bakery. Calling this a linzer tart at the exorbitant price of $2.50 was at the very least deceptive. This soft cookie was showered with white powdered sugar and the traditional thimble size cutout on the top cookie but this soft raspberry jam filled cookie was definitely NO linzer tart. I cannot wait for a European baker to bring his/her expertise to Newark. If/when this happens, Newark will never be the same. read more

My brother and mom ordered a cake for my nephew's birthday. We ordered a pirate cake for his party, supposed to be 1/3 sand dune and the rest water with no border. They didn't listen and when I brought it home it to find out it had a huge red border, and was 1/8 sand sprinkled. It tasted good but however it was not decorated to my expectations. All the pastries and desserts they make are great. It's easily the best bakery in Delaware. The only place that comes close is Serpe's but they're knocked out of the competition solely on account of their disgusting tomato "pizza" (which is literally just tomato sauce on white dough... Yeah it doesn't sound good and it isn't good). The only problem I have with Bing's is that the workers are a little snippy with you and they try to make you use cash on orders less than 5 dollars. Also, right when you walk in, they immediately ask you what you want to order. I'm like, "Lady I just walked into your delicious bakery and there are over 400 different options that I have to choose from, give me some damn time!" I like Bing's desserts, and I love the location, and the history they have. I have no idea if this is true, but they have to be Newark's oldest standing bakery. Customer service is fantastic- very helpful! We were very surprised to see how cheap it was for the selection of sweets we ended up with. However, as others have noted, the quality just isn't there. The chocolate covered pretzels were stale and the chocolate was...gummy? The cookies were very dry. The peach layer cake is ridiculously sweet, so sweet we couldn't even finish the small piece. Stopped here based on reviews and have been disappointed. Went here three times for a birthday cake. The first time they didn't spell the name correctly on the top. Now desperate, I agreed to have them correct it. They did, but it didn't look as good as it should have. BTW, the name was spelled correctly on the work order. Evidently the person decorating the cake didn't look. The cake was good, so I went back a second time. Guess what. The name wasn't spelled correctly. Again it was corrected, but looked bad. Ok, third and last time. When I picked up the cake, I asked why it was so cold, I was told it was refrigerated, but just baked. When I got it home, it was hard in the middle. Never again. read more

On Tuesday of this week, I jumped online to take a look at what kind of cakes I could order for my boyfriend's birthday. I saw two mini ones he would love, so I hurried up and ordered them. In the process of my ordering, I realized that delivery was an option. Having them delivered would be super helpful as I had a ton of people coming over and would likely be running around like a crazy person. I called the shop to make sure delivery was available to my address and she said that it was, I thanked her for her time and completed my order. I put into the notes that I had spoken with someone and she said delivery was possible. I paid for the order and went on about my day, not thinking about it again until after 7 that night when the bakery called. Shoulda been the first red flag. The same girl that I talked to about delivery earlier in the day called and told me I didn't pay for the delivery fee. The website doesn't show a fee, but that's ok, for the convenience I'll pay the 10 bucks. So I gave the girl my card info and thought everything was all good. Boy was I wrong. I get an email on Wednesday that my order is complete. Cool...but why are my cakes that I don't need until Friday evening done Wednesday morning? Then last night, I get home, expect for the cakes to be here at 4 pm as I requested and paid for. No cakes at 4, no cakes at 430, none at 445 so then I begin to worry. I call the bakery, explain I have ordered and paid for delivery to the SAME girl I've been dealing with since the beginning of this whole thing. She said "give me a minute" and proceeds to put me on hold for 10 minutes. Comes back, asks to confirm my address and says someone will be over with the cakes shortly and she's sorry they were really busy because of the holiday and proceeds to hang up. I get that the bakery was busy because of the holiday, if you can't keep up, don't take orders. By this time guests have all arrived for cake and ice cream and I have no cake! Finally cakes arrives over 2 hours late. I wouldn't even answer the door because I knew I'd flip so my boyfriend answered. Whoever brought the cakes blamed it on the girl who answered the phone, said she didn't do what she was supposed to do. I should have listened to the reviews. Never again. I can't believe I'm out 50 bucks for cakes that weren't even fresh and were over two hours late and with no real apology and half assed excuses. read more

Hands down best experience I've had! When you're getting married, everything is a rush and your brain is a mess, but when my husband and I walked into Bing's and met with Norma for our consultation, there was this air of trust and professionalism immediately, and she sat with us for a long time discussing options and answering questions and really helping us out. It's so nice to not have to worry about every single thing. It was no problem at all to get three totally unique tiers of our 3 tier cake. I brought a picture, too, and our cake turned out identical, if not better than what I had brought. They really made everything easy and was so so well done.
