Bing's Bakery might be one of my favorite places in Delaware! You're immediately greeted by a large selection of cookies, cakes, and pastries in a very clean environment. Everything I've ever had is fresh and delicious. They have some of the best prices that I've ever seen at a bakery too. The Chinese almond cookies are buttery, crispy, and delicious. The brownies are out of this world! Moist, chocolatey and not too sweet. I typically don't like frosting on brownies, but they make it work. It's balanced rather than overpowering. Their lobster tails are delicious and brimming with pastry cream! The pignoli cookies are soft and nutty. One of my girlfriend's favorites! She loves their cupcakes too! They have a good variety. I called to place an order for a special occasion for my twins. I wanted 1 eight-inch round layer cake with banana filling with blue icing and 1 eight-inch pink round layer cake with blueberry filling. Both cakes were to have stars of David fondant cutouts on them. Not overly complicated. The girl on the phone insisted there was NO WAY TO COLOR THE ICING BECAUSE IT WAS TOO DELICATE. (Seriously?) Instead of arguing with this kid and losing my hair, I agreed to two white icing cakes; one with pink flowers, one with blue balloons, both with the fondant stars of David cutouts (pink & blue). I paid for both cakes in full, because I have used this bakery for decades and trusted them. When I picked up the cakes I became livid. The bakery was full of PINK & RED ICING cakes for Valentine's Day. The young man helping me brought the cakes out & showed them to me. Neither had fondant cutouts... they were in pink and blue gel. I hate gel. The poor man heard my gripe about the BS excuse for the "delicate" icing, profusely apologized but didn't refund or discount my order. I really, really do enjoy Bing's bakery. There are a ton of options for baked goods plus you can order ahead as well. Some of my favorite things from there are the petit fours and the danishes. The cake is also very good (and I have never had a problem with misspellings). My most recent visit was around Easter to pick up a tomato pie and a danish for my family. There were so many really cute Easter offering that I wish I could have bought everything. I really liked the hollow sugar eggs with the Easter scenes inside, they were so intricate! I had preordered the Tomato pie and randomly picked the danish. The tomato pie was a little too sweet but still delicious. The danish was still fresh when I ate it three days later. The one thing that I would be weary of is that they have a LOT of baked goods already out. I question how all of it can stay fresh. I have never had a problem with ordering something off the shelf but who knows. Overall, I would recommend Bing's to anyone in the Newark area because they have so many options! read more

Believe it or not, although I grew up in Newark, I'd never been to Bing's until yesterday, since my parents' preferred bakery had always been Cannon's. I was on the hunt for a sweet afternoon snack, and my go-to ice cream place (UDairy) was closed for the holidays, so I figured I'd give it a try. I ordered the following: A mini eclair, a vanilla creme puff, a chocolate covered piece of layered pound cake, and a chocolate cupcake. The fillings of the mini eclair and vanilla cream puff were somewhat flavorless, which was disappointing. The layered pound cake was a bit better, but the main flavor I tasted was the chocolate ganache coating, which was reminiscent of commercial cake icing (the kind for sale in the grocery store). I've definitely had better chocolate ganache--including ganache that I make myself. The best of the items, by far, was the chocolate cupcake, which tasted appropriately chocolatey, and had a delicious chocolate buttercream icing. All of the items tasted fresh, more or less, with the cupcake tasting the freshest. When I was younger, I think I would have liked Bing's a lot more. However, now that I've tried goods from several bakeries in Pittsburgh and Philly, I have more exacting standards, and I wasn't impressed. While the selection at Bing's is much larger and more varied than that of most other bakeries I've tried, I have to wonder if this negatively affects the quality of the goods for sale there. I've never tried cake from Bing's, but based on the quality of the baked goods, I must concur with my parents' assessment that there is better to be had in the area. read more

I visited the bakery yesterday as I wanted to support one of my favorite local businesses in my town. I expected to encounter different business procedures but what I experienced really shocked me. Before entering I saw their were maybe 4 people already in the store and thought about waiting outside but since there was no sign on the door with a set customer limit or asking customers to wait, I entered. I was asked to wait by the door which was totally fine! What upset me was that we were then rushed to order without even seeing what they had that day. On top of that, the women who packaged my goods was not wearing gloves or a mask. There were 4 employees working the counter during a pandemic without masks on when every single customer had some type of face covering on. I decided to contact the store before posting a negative review in hopes they would understand the severity of such a situation. I have attached a photo of the response I got. Cash/credit cards accepted. Seating: Bright and unobtrusive seating area mostly used by a dedicated party planner and/or regular patrons. Service: Attentive and caring. Have never felt rushed when ordering and were very helpful. A few times, they have helped me bring my purchased items to my car. Have bought baked goods at Bing's for my family and for work for several years. Recently I had a terrible experience with one of their managers, Norma. She was rude and condescending, in front of other customers and other servers, in response to a simple inquiry. This happened three times over a one- week period. I will be shifting to one of the other many great bake shops in the area, and encouraging my work organization to do the same. I hope that Norma's manager will help her understand the importance of being friendly and polite to customers. Very disappointing. read more

For my entire life, Bing's has been a Delaware treasure for sweet treats and celebrations. In the midst of quarantine, Bing's has stepped up to deliver their famous baked goods all across Newark. First time visiting this bakery. The staff was super friendly and helpful. One in particular staff member (I can't remember her name), she was a middle aged gal, super sweet and helpful. She made sure to tell me to leave the cake out at room temperature for about 30 minutes, so that the cake would have a smooth consistency. Will definitely be using this bakery again! read more

I was at Bings yesterday(April 18, 2019) for our Easter treats. We were serviced by a woman named Cecilia(Hope I spelt it right)! She is a wonderful asset to the bakery. she is informative, funny, and pretty. I put people through the wringer with my (mom called it) dry humor and yet she came right back QUICK! we bought over $50(JUST $50?!????? WOW!! THAT'S ALL?). Cecilia is a LOL GREAT salesperson("oh you should take all 5 of the cannolis because leaving only 1 makes it awkward!!" LOL) We used to live in Newark and Bings was our go to bakery! But now we moved to Elsmere and the bakeries around here are substandard to Bings! A PERFECT world would have Bings build a store down here WITH Cecilia as the manager!! She DESERVES a 3 week PAID VACATION! AND a bump in salary to $20/hr Even with 5 stars thre was a couple disappointments(NOTHING at all to do with Cecilia!!!). you had no large cannolis, no chocolate cannolis, and no crumb buns! Bing's was underwhelming to put it nicely. I was extremely excited to try them out because I heard they make French macarons which are my absolute favorite treat. However, the French macarons were Horrible...the salted caramel was dry and hard and the vanilla macaron was sickly sweet and for a $1.00 each a complete ripoff for the quality. I also ordered a few cupcakes which tasted identical to the mini cupcakes you would get from the local supermarket. The only thing that was edible was the frosted brownie which tasted like a little Debbie snack cake. All in all it was a great disappointment and I don't think I will be back. I should have thoroughly read the reviews before entrusting Bing's with my daughter's graduation cake. I ordered a 1/2 sheet cake with buttercream frosting (1/2 chocolate and 1/2 vanilla). I paid $60+ for the cake. I waited approximately 15 minutes to pick up the cake at my scheduled date/time. The cake was nicely decorated and the staff was pleasant. When I served the cake to my guests, imagine my surprise to discover that well over half the cake was chocolate and only 1/4 of the cake was vanilla. The chocolate portion was moist but the vanilla cake was clearly lacking and completely dried out (e.g. crumbly). It appears that they took one of the day(s) old pre-made cakes that you see when you enter the bakery, scrapped the icing off of it, and butted it up to the chocolate cake. Additionally, since the vanilla side only comprised 1/4 of the cake, there was not enough remaining to serve the guests who requested vanilla. I phoned Bing's on their first scheduled day of business and informed them of my disappointment and embarrassment. The manager refused to speak with me personally and relayed several messages via the representative who answered the phone. They requested that I return the cake. Really? What is there to return? The vanilla side of the cake was sliced, served, and tossed (mostly uneaten) and, as mentioned, there was no other portion remaining since Bing's clearly did not provide me with the 1/2 chocolate and 1/2 vanilla sheet cake that I purchased. #Never again... read more

To be fair, this is just a review for their chocolate cupcake. The staff seemed very pleasant and the selection looked diverse, but my chocolate cupcake was only a two star affair. It was only 85 cents, and I definitely got what I paid for. Tasted like the chocolate frosting on Dunkin Donuts; sickly sweet and had been out long enough that the frosting had hardened on top, and was very soft under the initial crust. The cake was similar in flavor, but decently moist. I would use this place if I were serving children that didn't appreciate quality, just quantity and whether or not there are sprinkles. Had to take a family member to Wilmington Delaware the other day so while in the area we decided to visit Bing's Bakery in Newark Delaware. A real bakery with lots of goodies. A very nice young lady who was originally from LI, New York to care of us. The young lady explained to us about the different cakes and pastries and then gave us some options on what to try. Once we arrived back home to Lewes Delaware and tried some of the items that we purchased we were glad that we stopped at Bing's Bakery. Everything we purchased was fresh and all tasted good, all very yummy. I wish that we lived closer to Bing's Bakery so we can go there more often. I really, really, really wanted to give this place another try after Buddy's intervention but I was sort of disappointed, again. Last time: Asked the girl if there were "fresher" cakes (around a 5pm on a Friday) because I was bringing it to a friend's house for a little get-together. The girl seemed a bit insulted and I apologized but quickly explained that I've been burned way too many times with cakes in NJ and this is why I ask. So she pointed out a couple of cakes, one of which I pointed to and purchased. Well, when I was at my friend's house, I wanted to get under the table when I started to eat my stale, tasteless, and almost inedible cake slice. There was really a part of me that wanted to box the rest of it up and bring it back to the bakery the next morning but I let it go. This time (after renovation): The place looks cute (I thought it was cute before anyway) and they even have a little section off to the side with different flavored cupcakes (my weakness). So of course, I ordered a couple and then grabbed a triangle-shaped white chocolate treat that looked promising enough. I get home and the icing on the cupcakes is hard (ok, so they were refrigerated) but that wouldn't affect the taste. I check the "cake" part and one of them is stale (the other one fresh). All in all, not tasty and quite underwhelming. As for the triangle treat (I don't know what else to call it), it was inedible. I love to support small businesses and I wish this place all the best in the world. But the only time I have come across something good from them was at a dinner I attended with a cake that had been custom ordered. Therefore, I think your best bet is to order ahead for an event. Bing's was our go to bakery. But no more. I ordered a cake on Aug 13th for pick up the next day for my wife's birthday. I ordered a chocolate cake with butter cream icing. The cake was dry like it was 4 days old. The icing was not butter cream and had no taste. I went back the next week and asked for the manager. A young man of approx 25 years old came out. I assured him I wasn't looking for a refund, just the opportunity to express my disappointment. The manager asked for the cake or a piece of it. I told him we froze it for later use since we paid a lot of money for it. He could have cared less about my complaint. We did try and eat it later. It was just as bad. We tossed it. Never again! Had a great time with the fiance and her family today picking out what will eventually be our wedding cake. This post will be updated after our wedding in June, but so far the process for which to pick out a cake design and the insides of the cake was great. The person who worked with us has an art degree, and my fiance has very abstract ideas by description that the worker could almost perfectly put onto paper for her. Awesome so far.
