This is my first time in the central UP - I chose Marquette on a whim, really. I also began looking for hotels a few days before my arrival. Birchmont got good reviews on Trip Advisor (4/5), so I went for it. When I called to make a reservation I was told they had ONE single/full bed room left for the dates of my trip. Unfortunately the smaller rooms don't seem to have a fridge or microwave. I decided that the $30/day difference between the single room and the double room (which had the fridge/microwave) was definitely something I could live with! The motel is REALLY outdated (very '60s/70s) and the walls are extremely thin. You'll hear road noise (US-41) all through the night and whatever sounds your neighbors make (entire conversations, flatulence, lol...) Light sleepers beware. Little did I know what a TEENY tiny room the single is! It really is fit for only one person, but you could probably hack it with two people if you don't bring a lot of "stuff." There's a little more than 1' of space to walk around the full-sized bed, and about 3' of space at the end of the bed. There's a desk with a non-functioning drawer and a small TV screen. Much of the closet is taken up by a water heater. The bathroom is also small, and the very small shower head comes to about my chin (I'm 5'9"). If you're taller than 5', you'll have to do some Limbo to get your head wet! They provide you with a few plastic cups, 3 little hand soaps, 3 large-sized towels, 3 washcloths, and a towel for the floor. So, bring your toiletries and necessities: soap, shampoo, a hair dryer.. Depending on the rooms, you will either have a balcony or a porch area, both with furniture. (My window had several dead bugs in the crevices, as did the bathroom lamp...ehhh.) The rooms have heat and AC units. The internet goes in and out, but is free. The cable sometimes scrambles, but is also free. They have both a trash and recycling bin in the rooms. They have a heated pool (open until 9), a few kiddie playthings, some grills, a Coke machine on premises, and free breakfast in the morning. The staff is really friendly and seem resourceful. Despite US-41 between the hotel and the lake, it's a nice view. You can easily run across US-41 and take advantage of the bike trail. It's also a convenient way to get into downtown Marquette. There are some nice beaches and parks that way! You get what you pay for, y'know?

Leaking sink

Giving two stars because the folks are super nice BUT this room is the ickiest room I've ever stayed in. Coffee pot but no coffee or cups. Dirty microwave. 3 hangers and no closet door Bathroom door doesn't close properly Bathroom vent falling from ceiling. They provide super old sink/electric stove and sink is leaking. It is dirty !! Dirty and grimy bathroom, stains on ceiling, dusty. Bed is sooo hard, pillows flat. Hair on blanket !!! UGH. You are better offer going down the street a bit to the next motel which is far better than this.

The check in process was easy and parking while minimal was adequate during my stay. They offer complimentary coffee and water when you walk in which was a nice touch. The elevator is very old and extremely slow and I found myself thinking stairs might be faster. As for the room I had heard ahead of time not to stay on the sixth floor due to reported haunting activity so I was on the fifth. Each room is supposed to have a theme but mine felt rather dull and uninspired. Unfortunately the room was dusty and I found hair in the sink from a prior guest which was off putting. The bed was comfortable and the temperature was cold when I arrived at 62 degrees which I actually liked. The view was nice but the room was very loud in the evenings. I suspect I was right below the sixth floor bar because I could hear chairs dragging and plenty of noise until about eleven or twelve at night. On the positive side the staff was kind and nobody was rude. I also tried their restaurant pub twice and it was excellent. The fish and chips cheese curds and chicken strips were all delicious and I highly recommend eating there even if you are not staying at the hotel. Overall while I appreciated the history the location and the food I would not stay here again. My three star review is more about the cleanliness issues and the constant noise from above. For two nights in a king room the total was eight hundred twenty five dollars and for that price I expected a cleaner room better upkeep and more amenities.

Our room preference (high floor/ end room) was granted - much to my husband's dismay... as he was carrying the tour back to the furthest possible point from check- eek. (We did move the bike to the other end for check-out & he was in a much better mood after that shorter trek.) The rooms were noted as renovated a few years ago. Had I not known going in, I'd have guessed 80s (as the hubby did when I asked him to date the last update). The ceiling is concrete & painted mauve, making for (much appreciated) serious noise reduction & perhaps a bit of a hospital or prison feel, if you will. The walls are a light gray, as is the furniture. The artwork (3 pictures) was oddly small (8x10) & hung oddly. They furnishings were, perhaps, excessive. To open up the space & reduce the crammed in strangely look, I'd suggest removing a couple of things. There was a wall shelf/ TV holder. Under that was a desk, literally pushed under, as was dresser. It looked as if the furniture was pushed back for cleaning, stacking it up. There was also a wardrobe, chair & table that slides over the chair (think tv tray). The room was exceprionally clean & in excellent condition. It was 3/4 bath with a large shower - no tub. The bed was comfortable & temperature control worked well. The pool & sauna are not to be missed! The location is great for accessing assorted things to do. All in all a very good stay. We simply have a different taste than the decorator did, apparently. We are platinum with IHG & booked directly, without using points.

The only reason I gave this a 4-star is because of one of the front desk staff. She was too nice to where it felt like her interactions were fake. She also was not accommodating when we asked about using a space that was empty, for a meeting. We had 20 people staying there so to ask to use an empty dining room for 1/2 hour should not have been an issue. Even with that being said, I'd go back. They have a great pool, hot tub, and sauna!

Decided to give them a try again. After a delayed flight I arrived at this hotel after midnight. The parking in front was full so I drove to the back. I saw a door but I know they usually require a key so I drove back to the front to check in. The front desk lady Vanessa was very pleasant and thanked me for calling them to tell them I'd be arriving after midnight. I asked if my room was close to the doors she said yes which was great. But the it gets bad. I told her I drove around and saw it but came back to the front because those doors require a key. To mt horror and dismay she said no it's unlocked no key required. And she was correct I drove back around to unload and I walked right in. I will never stay here again since anyone without a key can access the hotel in back and the front desk will never see you. Side note, shower was great. Love hard pressure water.

It's not fancy, but it's got a king bed and a couch or loveseat for the hubby, he likes a separate lounge space for videos or social media activities. Their continental breakfast is sad. The waffle batter is thick, but on the waffle comes out airy and laid luster. The batter wasn't coming out much. The Smucker's packets were out. The oatmeal vat is dry add a bone. The eggs ate watery and not so good. At least there are Philadelphia cream cheese and Chobani yogurt to get me through the morning. Day two: bacon egg bites, smashed croissant sandwich with ham, eggs and cheese, pork sausage. Lovely, I don't eat pork at all. At least there was some oatmeal today for me. We stopped eating the breakfast after the 3rd day, since there were way better options nearby. Only so much oatmeal you can eat consecutively. The staff mostly keep to themselves and didn't interact with us at all during our trip, except for the check-in and check-out. Room was clean and quiet for rest. Continental breakfast was average, but you can fill up on lots of carbs for sure, rubbery food for the warm stuff.

The facilities do show their age and the room was a bit musty (I was travelling with a dog, so was in one of the rooms with direct entry to the parking lot rather than in the two-story building with the interior corridor), but everything was clean and the lake view was fantastic. The staff were friendly and efficient, and when I asked for tips about where to find trailheads and trail parking and local dog-friendly activities, I received great responses. The location on the highway is perfect if you're doing the lake route drive (as I was), although it does make it a little challenging to get over to the Iron Ore trail that's just on the other side of the highway. The guest in the room next to me wanted to cycle over and I was mildly concerned that I was about to witness an accident. That said, it's a very short drive to the Tourist Information Office's parking lot which is on the trail, which is how I ended up accessing it. The lobby has coffee, tea, and hot chocolate available all day, and the breakfast buffet was much better than most budget hotels offer. The breakfast room has a view of the lake as well, which was great.
