This was my first visit to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and I booked The Birchy Motel (formerly known as The Birchmont Motel) as it looked easy to find and had good review. Not only was it easy to find, the view of Lake Superior from our second floor room was amazing!!! It was also nice that we were on the end, and the motel was not overly busy - so it was really quite in the evening. The room itself was quite large, with a coffee maker, microwave, mini fridge/freezer, and sink. The bathroom was also large and included towels and the basic amenities. We had a king size bed, which was very comfortable! The TV was so nice (picture quality far better than my tv at home) and there were so many channels. My favorite are always the music video channels - great for background music! The patio was large and it was lovely to sit out and watch the sunset. Although it is located off a main road, the surroundings and atmosphere was very quite and peaceful. It was evident there had been recent updates/renovations, so recent there was not a rod or hangers in the closet. In fact, there were few places to lay out clothes. There was one table top, desk top, 2 night stands, and single chair in the room. We were there for 3 nights, so it wasn't too bothersome and I am sure they will finish installing these minor items soon. There is an outdoor pool, it was not in use during my stay (it was a brisk 55-65F). I booked using Hotels.com and they text you the door code prior to your arrival. I love Mom and Pop motels. They always seem to provide friendly personal service. After researching online I gave them a call (online booking is not an option). They were professional, courteous and very friendly going over the rooms available and letting me know exactly what to expect. A second story room with a queen bed overlooking Lake Superior. The motel is on Hwy 41 just outside of downtown Marquette MI. The views of Lake Superior are fantastic. We were on the second floor with a balcony overlooking the lake and a deck overlooking the woods. The room has a mini kitchenette with a sink, two burner stove combo, refrigerator and microwave. Dishes, silverware, a couple of pans, dish soap and towels are also included. Cute and convenient. There are also grills and picnic tables on the grounds for your use as well. Our room was $89.00/night plus tax. How can you pass up a deal like this? There is a pool, continental breakfast and the rooms are extremely clean. They do not provide shampoo, lotion, or hair dryers. Alas, there is a slight downside which resulted in a loss of a star. We booked for four nights. The fourth day we did not receive a full room service. Just a change of towels. we had depleted our soap and it was not refilled, the bed was not made up and the trash was not emptied. I would have given four stars if I were leaving this review immediately after my stay- we stayed here in the summer of 2019 and at the time I intended to return over and over again! The room was tiiiiiny, but it was $50 a night and had a balcony overlooking Lake Superior, which was an incredible deal! However, we returned to Marquette in the summer of 2021, and when I went to book my room, the exact same room had literally doubled in price- it is now $100, which for that room is completely insane (did I mention how tiny it was???). $100 for a full sized bed, no mini fridge/microwave, and only enough space in the room for one person to walk around the bed (that was the only floor space- a U shape around the bed the width of one person) is a total ripoff. It was well worth the slight discomfort at the $50 price point, but on our 2021 trip we stayed elsewhere for under $100 and considerably more space- we will return to that place now over the Birchmont. read more

This is my first time in the central UP - I chose Marquette on a whim, really. I also began looking for hotels a few days before my arrival. Birchmont got good reviews on Trip Advisor (4/5), so I went for it. When I called to make a reservation I was told they had ONE single/full bed room left for the dates of my trip. Unfortunately the smaller rooms don't seem to have a fridge or microwave. I decided that the $30/day difference between the single room and the double room (which had the fridge/microwave) was definitely something I could live with! The motel is REALLY outdated (very '60s/70s) and the walls are extremely thin. You'll hear road noise (US-41) all through the night and whatever sounds your neighbors make (entire conversations, flatulence, lol...) Light sleepers beware. Little did I know what a TEENY tiny room the single is! It really is fit for only one person, but you could probably hack it with two people if you don't bring a lot of "stuff." There's a little more than 1' of space to walk around the full-sized bed, and about 3' of space at the end of the bed. There's a desk with a non-functioning drawer and a small TV screen. Much of the closet is taken up by a water heater. The bathroom is also small, and the very small shower head comes to about my chin (I'm 5'9"). If you're taller than 5', you'll have to do some Limbo to get your head wet! They provide you with a few plastic cups, 3 little hand soaps, 3 large-sized towels, 3 washcloths, and a towel for the floor. So, bring your toiletries and necessities: soap, shampoo, a hair dryer.. Depending on the rooms, you will either have a balcony or a porch area, both with furniture. (My window had several dead bugs in the crevices, as did the bathroom lamp...ehhh.) The rooms have heat and AC units. The internet goes in and out, but is free. The cable sometimes scrambles, but is also free. They have both a trash and recycling bin in the rooms. They have a heated pool (open until 9), a few kiddie playthings, some grills, a Coke machine on premises, and free breakfast in the morning. The staff is really friendly and seem resourceful. Despite US-41 between the hotel and the lake, it's a nice view. You can easily run across US-41 and take advantage of the bike trail. It's also a convenient way to get into downtown Marquette. There are some nice beaches and parks that way! You get what you pay for, y'know? read more

Clean, great view, great value...Perfectly located just outside of town, but not too far. It's away from all the other commercialized hotels. Nice drive into town. It's not pretty from the outside or impressive on the inside but it's clean and a great location. Would stay again anytime. read more

Giving two stars because the folks are super nice BUT this room is the ickiest room I've ever stayed in. Coffee pot but no coffee or cups. Dirty microwave. 3 hangers and no closet door Bathroom door doesn't close properly Bathroom vent falling from ceiling. They provide super old sink/electric stove and sink is leaking. It is dirty !! Dirty and grimy bathroom, stains on ceiling, dusty. Bed is sooo hard, pillows flat. Hair on blanket !!! UGH. You are better offer going down the street a bit to the next motel which is far better than this. read more

I will never stay anywhere else when next I end up near Marquette! And would travel just so I could put this gem on my itinerary! Jill and her staff are sincere, friendly and attentive and we immediately fell in love with the place and it's view of Lake Superior! Our room was clean, cozy and spacious, beds comfortable and with big windows that open to let in the lake breezes. A great front lawn facing the lake with grills, disc golf and a long porch with a table and chairs for each room. Quick stay for a night picking up my son moving out of his dorm for the summer. I've stayed in the chain hotels up here several times, but this place beats them all in terms of price, location, and friendliness. Not a luxury accommodation, but everything you need. Kitchenette in the room with dishes, stovetop, sink, microwave, mini fridge, coffee pot. A bathroom you can actually move around in! Beautiful morning sunrise from the balcony overlooking Lake Superior. Great continental breakfast spread with trays to bring back to your room. I didn't give it five stars only because the 41 traffic is right outside my window, but if you're not a light sleeper, you don't even notice. Great spot if you're on a budget (ahem.....college parents, I'm talking to you!) I'll definitely be staying here for now on! read more

Birchmont Motel - Hotels Near Me - Marquette, Michigan

My husband and I stayed here for one night. And I must say, he is the one who pointed out to me how absolutely spotless clean our room was. Not one stray hair in the bathroom and not one cobwebs in any corner. He said "this is cleaner than any higher end hotel we've ever stayed at". The more I looked around he was absolutely right. As we were leaving one of the housekeepers asked if we were checking out and we told her we were. We also told her impressed we were with the cleanliness and she was very happy to hear that we noticed, and she actually was the head housekeeper. We were talking a little further and she actually shared with us how amazing the owner, her boss, was to the employees. She even stated that the housekeepers at this motel we're paid better than the chain hotel housekeepers in the area, hotels that charge up to $500 a night for a room. She even told us that once during an extremely hot and humid day of the housekeepers were given an extra cash bonus by the owner with her appreciation for them working in the heat. As we walked away my husband said "we'll never stay anywhere else again in Marquette-they've got customers for life after hearing all that. And I agreed! If you're looking for something more modern and up-to-date, this is not the hotel for you. It is dated but you won't find any hotel/motel cleaner or more comfortable. And with a lovely view of the lake across the street. From this one night stay we went camping at porcupine Mountains and on our way home stopped in Mackinac city. We're just about died when we walked into our Lakeview hotel room when we saw the sink had not been cleaned whatsoever-three huge globs of toothpaste besides regular use evidence of an unclean sink. We thought back to this motel and the lovely housekeeper we were speaking with a knew if she could come and see the room that we were in she would just die... read more

This place has a lot going for it. A lake view, nice-sized rooms, comfy beds, porch/balcony overlooking the lake...but it needs a lot of work to live up to its potential. The furnishings are very dated, which itself isn't a huge problem, since they don't seem overworn, but some features of the room just don't work. One burner on the stove was taken completely out, and the other barely gets warm--took me 15 minutes to scramble eggs. They do supply a hot plate, but it's hard to find a convenient place to set it up. The shower runs out of hot water quickly. The switch for an overhead lamp sparks when you click it. I don't know if other rooms have these problems, but it's hard to believe no other room would have some similar issues. Not a terrible place, but not one I'll return to unless I hear some major renovations have occurred. read more

I so loved my short stay at this motel. The bed was the most comfortable I've ever found - got up in the morning with no aches or pains. A first for me. I was so happy. Everything clean and spotless. Nice change from the cookie cutter chain hotels. Fell in love with the retro decor! Staff is very friendly and they got me in at the last minute. Wish I'd gotten in earlier so I could see the rest of the property. Great balconies and ample parking. I had a double room but I hear they have singles?! How often do you find that nowadays?! This place is not swanky or posh but don't forget, it does say "motel" in the name. Having said that, you can't argue with a beautiful view of the lake from your room window for about $65 (which is what we paid for the room with a queen-sized bed). And that includes a kitchenette, mini-fridge, microwave, a/c/, and wi-fi (am writing from the motel room right now!). The Econolodge next door wanted to charge me for at least $91 for the same view but they only had wi-fi in their lobby... huh?!?!? Needless to say, so glad we came here! read more

Great for the price and you get what you pay for. I just wish some of these older 60'ish places would wash the shower curtains more often to get rid of the moldy sour smells. It is clean. views toward the lake are nice. Bring some smell-good of some sort and you will be fine. read more

Stayed at birchmont for 3 nights very nice owners, and the rooms were very clean enjoyed the wonderfull view, its a hidden gem.

I am so thrilled we found this place! We just spent the last 2 nights at a chain hotel and were sorely dissatisfied. What a breath of fresh air the Birchmont Motel was. I'm glad I didn't read their reviews first, because it would have scared me off. I think the owners must have addressed the issues past customers raised. This location is the greatest. Beautiful views and close to hiking, biking, kayaking, and downtown Marquette. We first had a king bedroom, then extended our stay a second night with a queen bedroom. It is dated, but clean and well cared for. Our rooms were spacious. We did not notice any sound issues from neighbors or the road (a room air conditioner provided "white noise"). Coffee, bagels, cereals and fruit comprised the complementary breakfast. I liked parking right near our room, easy outside entrance without having to enter a large lobby and walk a country mile, then wait and wait for an elevator just to arrive in the room. This is a super value and we are already planning to stay here on our next vacation to the UP. read more
